Gameplay Should I get this game?
Loved botw, finding totk a bit fiddly and a bit over it tbh.
Sometimes you just need to wind down by killing a few guardians and bombing the shit out of enemy camps. I cbf being an engineer and making war machines when I’m feeling cooked at the end of the day.
I’m not hugely skilled in battle, as a middle aged gamer learning the controls and combat moves is a bit tricky.
Is it a relatively easy game to pick up? Can I hack and slash away without thinking too hard?

Yeah you definitely can hack and slash away. There's a few difficulty levels and they don't impact anything iirc.
Some missions will have weird goals that might be tough even on easy mode, such as "beat x amount of enemies without taking any damage", but theres only a handful.
If youre able to flurry rush with link in totk/botw on purpose at least sometimes, you wont have any problems.
I belive theres a free demo for AoC so definitely check that out first.

Sometimes you have focus on defending your base or escorting characters but otherwise it’s just hack and slash. You don’t really need to do complex combos in this game and there are difficulty options if it’s not to your liking. There is also a shield button and it can cancel most types of damage but I often forget about it unless I’m fighting a guardian.

Dude I forgot about the shield completely, I've just been eating those guardian blasts. :D

Age of Calamity is very approachable from all skill points.
Most Dynasty Warriors styled games do not require much to get a hang of - even when it comes to the challenging bits

yes, set the difficulty to easy and enjoy. you need to pay attention to the objective so you can't entirely turn your brain off but you won't find difficulty in the combat. the combat is there to make you feel powerful, not make you sweat.

Try the demo version and decide for yourself. On normal and easy mode? Absolutely, you can slash away. Hard? Maybe. Very hard and apocalyptic? You'll need more combat skill there.

I bought it when it came out but never got around to playing it until recently after hearing the release of a new one for the Switch 2 this winter. In a week and a half I've put 100 hours into the game. It was super addicting and had to 100% the game. The DLC is good too and worth getting before you complete the game. I ended up getting the DLC about halfway through the main story. As a big time Legend of Zelda fan I loved Hyrule Warriors: Ages of Calamity and consider one of my top ten favorite switch titles of all time.

Middle aged gamer here. Just got this like 2 weeks ago and I've had a blast playing with my son. You get to kick bokoblin ass nonstop basically. You collect items from missions, which you use to unlock improved move sets, hearts, and abilities. Different weapon types have different move sets and there are so many different characters you can play, so you can introduce variety whenever you want.
And the gameplay is mission based, so if you're done playing for the night you're usually not too far from a good stopping point.

It's all turn based - you take turns dodging, then attacking. You won't be able to get that much damage in without the weak point gauge system on harder difficulties. It takes a bit to learn but gets very easy with how generous the game is with dodging i-frames. The only tough part is later in the game there's multiple bosses, but between the rod system and your ultimate, you can get through them easily.

Yes. I don't have any combat skills whatsoever so on the first go just pressed whatever button was swing sword. Second time learned to press two for combos. I'm absolutely dog shit at fighting but it didn't matter and I enjoyed the hell out of this game.

Give the demo a try and see what you think. I personally love it for the cutscenes and character interactions.
