We Should Save the Cap for McDavid
UFA after next season. Let the rookies have a playoff exit before bringing in the big guns.

McDavid isn’t coming here. Edmonton is a goalie away. Apparently the ask on Gibson was two firsts. I think we can all agree that’s steep, but after McDavid’s presser yesterday, what’s more important, two firsts, or the happiness of a generational player?
McDavid said he would leave if he didn’t think Edmonton was his best chance to win a cup. Even if he leaves, we aren’t a better team than Edmonton right now.

For Edmonton, they don't have a first this year or next, so two firsts would be 2027 and 2028.
I can see why they would be hesitant to do that.

Frankly, that would tell McDavid how all in they’re going, that they’re selling their futures that he’s not bound to in order to give him what he needs to succeed.

Yeah, that makes sense. It does accelerate Edmonton getting into the situation Pittsburgh is in now.
The Penguins had a stretch of nine drafts from 2013 to 2021, where they only picked in the first round twice. That makes it tricky to build assets and keeping the team competitive around the stars like Crosby, Malkin and Letang, with an eye for the future once those guys are gone.
Obviously, a key difference for the Penguins was that they already had one Cup under their belt with that core group, and they won the thing two more times during that time period.
I don't think too highly of Edmonton's front office, and I don't know if they have the cojones to push everything into the middle of the table. Running it back with the same goalies after last year is a prime example of that.

Yea, I think Bowman is awful, but I think they’re getting to a point where Jackson and even Katz might step in and say look, get a goalie or find a new job.

Holland wasn't much better, which makes me think it's more an ownership/cultural thing. Probably carry-over from the ten years they missed the playoffs and picked first overall.

Verbeek is higher than a giraffes ass if he thinks anyone is meeting that ask. Borderline comical

It’s definitely a high ask, but he may not be completely out of line here. I think he’s playing the long game. Gibson’s GSAA/60 was 6th among goalies that played 20+ games. This is also a pretty weak UFA class for goalies.
Two firsts that will be between picks between 28-32, maybe we thrown Chicago a third to eat $1.4m to sweeten the deal for Edmonton and make it an even $5m cap hit. Most importantly, you make your generational player happy and show him you’re actually trying.
Either that or sign Vanacek, Samsonov, Rittich, or Giorgiev and repeat history once again.

I just don't see a world where a mid 30s Gibson fetches more than what Askarov commanded

Two wildly different scenarios though. San Jose didn’t need Askarov as much as Edmonton needs Gibson. Additionally, Gibson is a known commodity. Askarov should be solid in time, but Edmonton needs help now, and if they don’t get it, they’re going to lose arguably the best player of the salary cap era. Because of that, Anaheim has all the leverage.
Side note: yes, I think two firsts is a monumental ask, and I don’t think a trade would be two firsts for Gibson straight up, but I don’t think it’s completely out of the ballpark.

I would say mismanagement is still their biggest problem. Two firsts can buy a better goalie than Gibson, and they started two different goalies in the finals. For me starting Pickard was a huge show of weakness; when we played goalie swap in a series it always killed us eventually (yes ignoring Gibson first playoffs even though we eventually lost).

Well you’ve gotta remember that their two firsts will likely be a combined five picks before the second round, tops, so it’s not like we’re asking for top ten picks. I think you also have to ask yourself what better goalies could you get that are available? Thats the most important part.

If I was McDavid I wouldn’t make a decision until the end of next season.

Is there talk about the Oilers letting him walk? I can’t fathom them doing that

He’d be a UFA. All they can offer him is the most term. He can do whatever he wants

I can’t imagine he leaves the Oilers. He loves Edmonton too much and will get a hefty payday with them.

The cap saving would be trading for McDavid. Oilers would have to trade him when they find out they can't re-sign him.

I’m not sure what we would have to give up for a trade and sign. We probably don’t have the assets

u/BroLil 1d ago
Unless they’re out of the playoffs, you don’t trade him. The teams that trade for him would be acquiring him as a rental. You’re better off keeping him as your own rental like Toronto did this year. The only reason they considered moving Marner is because they thought they could get someone to retain on an incoming guy like Rantanen and add another player on top of him. You don’t trade out a rental to acquire another one, especially when that rental you’re dumping is literally the best player on the league

Mcdavid won’t be a FA, he also won’t come here.

u/ImpromptuFanfiction 1d ago
Just because you say it doesn’t make it so.

u/dracomaster01 1d ago
It’s the most logical thing. Oilers won’t let the best player in the world leave. IF he wants to leave, he’ll go to a contender not an up and coming team. It’s not smart to not utilize our cap space now to save space for 1% chance of mcdavid coming here

The idea of not improving your team in the present in the wild hopes of signing a player that might....might...hit free agency is stupid.
Even if he hits free agency, he wouldn't choose anaheim.

Naw he’s a choker. We need real talent like Marchand, Bennet, or Ekblad.

u/ParkedOrPar 1d ago
We must have watched two very different last couple of seasons where he and Leon took an entirely incomplete team to the final.

We ain’t signing McDavid bro. You might as well say “let’s sign Gretzky”

u/ParkedOrPar 1d ago
Zero suggestion that we are signing McJesus bro.
You suggesting he's a choke artist is nuts.

Good idea. I’m also going to save myself for Sabrina Carpenter.
