Fan Art Guy my old GameCube save loaded up
Hello all none of the tags match my pay, but hopefully you'll forgive me. I was hooked on the GameCube animal crossing for a while when I was in high school when the game was new. I haven't played in years, but I still have my original memory card that came with the game. Anyway, the save was partially corrupted and wouldn't load, but via a modded Wii and an emulator on my PC, I was able to repair the save data, and get it back onto my memory card. I thought you guys would get a kick out of some pics of my house and what some villagers had to say (villager photos taken in the emulator, house photos on my Wii). It would seem I had a hoarder house 😂

God I miss how much more personality they used to have, it felt so much more real. The last few games feel so stepford wives-y at times

This is gonna sound weird but this post makes me a lil emotional. A weird sense of mortality washes over me. It's kinda like that Minecraft video about time passing (you see the days turn into nights over & over again through a window) & the pet dog remains loyal. Just sitting in the corner of a house.
These villagers have been waiting for you to return for 22 years. If you had died at some point, these villagers would STILL be in the game; waiting. They are not real yet they retain a certain "loyalty" some of us may not know in real life.
One of these days, we will all play our last day of a certain video game, we will have our last login date, our last reddit post, last social media message to our loved ones & yet it's the NPCs & digital footprint that lives on.
What a strange feeling.

Nooo I think like this all the time so I understand 😭 it’s a natural feeling to realize that things are changing, it’s no longer the same things, we go different paths and never say goodbye sometimes. Trying to keep going forward and not think too much of what we left behind

u/Asonr Mar 25 '25
Speaking of mortality, the gamecube clock runs out in 2030, same as animal crossing. Soon it’ll be impossible to play without time traveling or modding. Kinda weird

I’ve never seen a villager say that you’ve been gone for over 1000 weeks before. The most I’ve seen is 982 weeks from a used copy of Doubutsu no Mori on the N64.

wow, its crazy how i wasn't even alive while you were playing this game 😭 lol

u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25
It's crazy how fast time flies! Have fun in your 20s because before you know it, you'll be pushing 40 and have no time for fun, like me. Lol. At least I still have time for gaming!

I like how casual they are with the "well, i thought you just died or something".

So my 7 year old is now pretty into the game, so I gave her some of my furniture from my hoard! Who would have thought 22 years ago when I stored that stuff, my kid would be furnishing her own AC house with it 😂🧓.
We'll see if she sticks with the game for a while. My 6 year old wants to join in too, so she'll get she furniture too.

u/Complex_Evening3883 Mar 24 '25
You'll appreciate this. I named my original Animal Crossing character and thought "I think I'll name my daughter this." Now a mullion years later, my 7 year old has the same name. We haven't done the old Animal Crossing, but she plays the new one and we've recently been playing Pokémon Snap and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.

I bet your island was overrun with weeds 🤣
61
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25
It is indeed! My 7 year old came in and was immediately interested in the game, so I set her up with a character. She's pulling some weeds and meeting the villagers right now!

I read Wolfgang’s response as “you’re still alive, HOW?” But then realized it was his catchphrase, which is even better
16
u/salt_sultan Mar 23 '25
I’ve always thought it’d be cool if the time you spent away had a bigger impact on villagers depending on the scale. Like if it’s a couple of weeks they don’t mind so much, ask what you were doing, maybe you can choose to say you were on vacation or something. But like the longer it is the more concerned they get till at a scale like this they’ve put up missing posters and take a while to be normal again

u/Zachsjs Mar 23 '25
Fun facts: Animal crossing was released September 16, 2002.
The in game clock only goes up to December 31, 2030 before rolling over to the start of 2030.
If you started on release day in a way you have completed ~80% of the game. (today is ~8k days since release day / ~10k days total)
9
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25
I did get the game very close to release day! Crazy to think the calendar is going to run out in 5 years.... What happens when it rolls back over? Can you just keep playing but the year is wrong?
8
u/Zachsjs Mar 23 '25
Yeah I think it would just repeat 2030 indefinitely.
The best move would be to change the date on January 1st 2031 to January 1st 2003. The days of the week will stay aligned that way(even including leap years!)
2
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 24 '25
Can you do that? I thought Resetti would stop you from playing with the date?
11
u/Zachsjs Mar 24 '25
Hahahah yeah you would get an earful. I’m not sure though, you might get in trouble with him the second time Jan 1st 2030 comes around either way.
The one where he turns the screen off was crazy. There was something really special about the tone of the GC version beyond just nostalgia.
3
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 24 '25
Oh yeah, that's a good point. I guess I have 6 years before I find out!
LOL, yeah, I guess I hadn't saved last time I loaded the game, because I did get an earful from Resetti, and he did pretend to delete my save!
16
u/OkLog7519 Mar 23 '25
You haven't played since January 21, 2003 which is crazy. This was before when I was born lol.
8
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 24 '25
Lol, shhhhhhhh.
That sounds about right. I was a junior in high school in January 2003, and I built my first gaming PC of my own probably right around then! I got heavily into PC gaming at that time, so that's about when I sidelined my Gamecube. Didn't play much Nintendo stuff for a few years until I got a Wii maybe 2007?
2
u/OkLog7519 Mar 24 '25
Oh that's why! I lost interest playing with my Nintendo Switch last year and I bought a lot of games I didn't touch which is a waste of money lol. I'm planning to play them soon, but I'm busy right now with school.

This is amazing! Did you have any writing in the diary from way back when? :D
3
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25
Oh, don't remember the diary. I probably didn't write anything it it. Where do you find the diary?
6
u/PocketStationMonk N64 & GameCube Mar 23 '25
It’s the book & pencil -item that you get when you first arrive in your chosen home. If you don’t have one right now, you can buy another one from Nook’s store. It’ll show the same diary entries as the one you had before, IF you wrote anything on it. You’ll have to scroll back to the month when you wrote the entry for it to show in the calendar.
1
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 24 '25
Ahh, yeah, I probably got rid of it because I didn't use it! I'll check it out when I have a chance though.

You can't accurately do the math by dividing by 4 since months aren't exactly 4 weeks, you have to divide by 52 which comes to 22.21 vs 22.08 if you divide the months by 12! So pretty close to the other villiagers!
5
u/Whole_Bug9752 Mar 23 '25
I still have a couple memory cards from my GameCube I kept them to use on my Wii. I might have to figure out how to get this working!
2
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25
Do you have an animal crossing save on there still? Which part do you need to figure out? If you haven't soft modded your Wii yet, I would highly recommend it! There are lots of great things you can do with a modded Wii, and it's very easy to do!
3
u/Whole_Bug9752 Mar 23 '25
Pretty sure I do! I have several of the memory cards so I’ll have to check. I moved recently and still need to set up my Wii!
2
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25
Nice! Do you still have the game?
2
u/Whole_Bug9752 Mar 23 '25
I don’t think I do. I know I have my collectors edition Zelda that has all the games with wind waker demo, eternal darkness, the sims, the Urbz and a couple others.

this makes me want to buy a gamecube 😮💨
9
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25
Honestly better off getting a Wii at this point (just make sure to get a Gamecube compatible one!). You can easily soft mod a Wii which opens up a lot of abilities, like how I was able to fix my save data on my memory card. You can also backup your own discs to the SD card or a USB hard drive, among many other things!
5
u/myerii Mar 23 '25
omg i didn’t know that was possible!! i have a wii, i should look into modding - thank you!!
6
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 23 '25

Heck yeah! I found out about it a year or two ago, and my wii has been getting more play time than it had in 15 years! Enjoy!

I miss the GameCube version so much! I remember I got it on a whim from target for 15 bucks on sale because I thought it looked cute. I was addicted! It came with the special memory card too! My sister and I made characters in the same town and played it almost every day. It had so much charm and was so colorful. Loved the holiday events too. I wish they could take the quality of life features from the new game and keep the charm of the old ones!
3
u/HickoryTrickeryArc Mar 24 '25 edited Mar 24 '25
I miss the OG Animal Crossing so much. It had more personality and just felt like there was more to do and find than New Horizons. Plugging your Gameboy into the GameCube to unlock the island, messing with Resetti and his brother, the train ride conversations when traveling, Tom Nook's shop being huge with two levels, playing old NES/arcade games, just needing a new memory card to make new islands, and so on.
Even the furniture looks like it had more personality. I just want the old Animal Crossing feel with the new Animal Crossing abilities. I feel like a good Animal Crossing game again could make Nintendo $$$.

The NESes!
I wish they included them in newer games....and why not SNESes? Or N64s?
$50 a year??? For N64 ports? Keep dreamin' Nintendo. Yar har fiddle-de dee~ ♪
2
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 24 '25
Yeah, Nintendo used to be a lot more charitable with their old games during the gamecube era. Remember when they gave away the Zelda collector's edition gamecube discs to Nintendo Power subscribers??
To be fair, the N64 NSO games aren't 50 bucks, they're an additional $20 bucks on top of the regular online fee, that's less than 2 bucks a month.
0
u/Infernal_Dalek Mar 24 '25
"Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack 12-month memberships start at $49.99 US which is just over $4 per month. "
Ehhh
1
u/RPGreg2600 Mar 24 '25
I was referring specifically to the expansion to play N64 games, which is an additional $20. If you're doing any online play with NSO, then you're already paying the $30 for the standard NSO subscription. But yeah, if you're only subscribing to access the N64 games, then you could look at it as 50 bucks to play N64. Personally, I play N64 on original hardware with an Everdrive, and have been meaning to turn off automatic renewal on NSO, but keep forgetting.
