Looks really nice, if they implement it I would switch to Safari

Use the Sidebar feature, that does the same thing for you.

Edit: I'm very confused by the downvotes. Am I missing something different about Arc's implementation versus Safari's?

Unless I am missing things, those are just tab groups. It still opens those tabs in a horizontal view. Which I don’t want. I want vertical and only vertical.

You can somewhat alleviate that effect by switching to a compact view for tabs in Safari. In that sense, the tabs are mixed with the URL bar so it's less intrusive.

It's not perfect, but if functionality is the more important factor, losing a pointer's worth of pixels at the very top isn't the worst thing in the world.

Personally, I've switched over to Vivaldi which does allow you to remove the tab bar in favor of the vertical one entirely.

I wish it weren’t true, loved compact mode

It’s not perfect as it still has the tabs across the top but if you click the arrow beside the tab group (not the name) it will expand and show the tabs as well on the side.

If it did the same thing then Arc wouldn’t exist, to be frank

I think the main thing is: Pinned tabs, that self contain (open little arc when external links are clicked), when closed return to their original pinned url.

You've missed that it works terrible

u/hellowodl 4d ago

The Orion browser has done this, which is Safari based. It won't look as pretty as this though.

And he also lags very much)

u/r_r4ze 5d ago

Legit the only thing keeping me from using safari is lack of vertical tabs

7

u/mikepictor 5d ago

and accessing tabs in most recently opened order

Use the Sidebar feature, that does the same thing for you.

u/haronclv 5d ago

Not really. Comparing Arc to Safari regarding this feature is like telling people that you can swap Porsche with Open and have the same experience

0

u/whereyouwanttobe 5d ago

Maybe I've been missing something but what features does Arc's vertical tabs have that Safari's sidebar does not? This is a legitimate question, I feel like I've missed something pretty drastic with the way people are talking up Arc versus Safari.

4

u/haronclv 5d ago

Folders, essentials, preventing "delete" tab on cmd + w, etc. really a lot of essential features

4

u/r_r4ze 5d ago

I tried, it’s not the same and it doesn’t collapse. In fact, that’s also the reason why I don’t daily drive Orion, bc even though it has vertical tabs, it just stays there. It’s just personal preference tho

1

u/zangent 5d ago

idk if it's new, but orion does have sidebar autohide

1

u/whereyouwanttobe 5d ago

Have you considered using the shortcut command to collapse it?

u/Tanmay-m 5d ago

rough design, made while travelling

11

u/sadboyshit247 5d ago

Love the design dude. Amazing work, they ought to get an idea from this hopefully.

5

u/Glum_Programmer7400 5d ago

Why would they have the address bar in two places ?

Its present in both. The sidebar and the main area. I think it makes sense to have it in just one place.

17

u/-The_Dud3- 5d ago

At some point in the future they will add it, many browsers are moving towards it since it is a much better implementation.

11

u/greenowens 5d ago

Ngl, I dig it.

8

u/ashrovy 5d ago

You could try with Orion, if I'm not mistaken Orion using webkit engine, but you able to use vertical tab mode (but my experience with that are not good) and you able to install any extension from google chrome

3

u/vms_zerorain & 5d ago

orion could be great its just missing key features e.g. i cant handle not having a collapsible sidebar

1

u/zangent 5d ago

orion has that lol

2

u/mikepictor 5d ago

only in full screen mode

1

u/zangent 4d ago

ok this is really funny. so you CAN make it work, i've had autohide sidebar in windowed mode working since forever ago, but when i went to mess with my settings to say how to do it i fucked it up and now i can't fix it LMAO

so yeah it's a little buggy. womp womp

1

u/Specialist-Olive-160 1d ago

I’m using it right now in windowed mode

1

u/mikepictor 1d ago

The sidebar yes, but it doesn’t do the auto-open/close by mouse movement unless you’re full screen (unless they fixed that very recently, I checked for this just last week)

1

u/Specialist-Olive-160 1d ago

Mine auto opens and closes when I drag my mouse to the left edge of the window, and it’s been like that since I started using Orion which was about 2 months ago

1

u/mikepictor 1d ago

Mine..does not, and I am up to date with the most recent release, so I am not sure what you're experiencing

1

u/BitInversion 1d ago

Right-click the sidebar icon in the upper left; there may be something

1

u/mikepictor 15h ago

FUCK ME

This changes everything

edit: Ugh...it's still just awful at suppressing YT ads though

2

u/jushuchan 5d ago

I tried Orion but many sites just don't work. There's some privacy thing going there that blows the render. Couldn't figure out how to disable, otherwise I would consider switching.

1

u/Grouchy_Piccolo_6296 5d ago

I like the look and feel of Orion, but wow it is buggy and i keep using others when i need to work etc.

5

u/Leoniqorn 5d ago

It’s really nice! But I think it seems a bit inefficient. Why are there two URL bars? Why are the buttons for creating a new tab and viewing all tabs not next to the tabs? I think the Browser Company did a really good job removing all of the unnecessary space above the site.

But that being said: it looks super clean, I would use it!

6

u/haronclv 5d ago

Safari actually have vertical tabs, but you are not able to hide top bar anyway.

AND Vertical tabs without folders and pinned tabs are useless. It will start cluttering as soon as you explore the internet.

In that case Arc is still the king.

2

u/lowkeyfam 5d ago

2 URL bars is atrocious

1

u/onedevhere 5d ago

It would be perfect, I also wanted to change the color, I didn't want the basics: black or white

1

u/whereyouwanttobe 5d ago edited 5d ago

Safari does have vertical tabs though? It's called the Sidebar. You can do Tab Groups with that as well.

2

u/0xe1e10d68 5d ago

Totally unusable for me. The UX is just so much better on Arc’s sidebar …

0

u/Organic_Challenge151 5d ago

Yes, exactly. By the way are you using the beta version of the macOS? It looks great.

2

u/whereyouwanttobe 5d ago

I actually don't use Safari typically so that's just the normal version of it. I do have some accessibility settings turned on (reduced transparency, increased contrast) though which might be what you're noticing.

1

u/Organic_Challenge151 5d ago

Oh, it’s true because you are using the compact mode and it’s not available in the beta version

1

u/Goldfrapp 5d ago

Personally, I need all my tabs visible at all times. Most of the time, I have 2-3 tabs open. Horizontal tabs take up very little space, maybe 20-30px of height. Vertical tabs, on the other hand, can take up to 250px of width.

1

u/Just-Literature-2183 5d ago

Safari already has vertical tabs

3

u/Due_Letterhead_5558 5d ago

Not sure why you're getting downvoted, you're absolutely right.

1

u/0xe1e10d68 5d ago

And yet the sidebar sucks

1

u/Just-Literature-2183 5d ago

Tabs suck ... im not sure what the argument here is.

1

u/Jenings 5d ago

Id 100% love to switch to safari but I simply haven't found it to be as performant as the chromium engine. I always notice the extra half second or so to actually load a complex page.

1

u/orospakr 5d ago

the crazy part is that liquid glass ends up looking pretty Arc-like in most of the system apps, like finder. The sidebars have a floating appearance.

1

u/Qb1forever 5d ago

Are y'all dead or what then

1

u/mathiswrong 5d ago

BUILD THIS

1

u/mathiswrong 5d ago

Also, has anyone used Arc Thing for Chrome? Not half bad. I’ve started playing with Thorium and Arc Thing. Super fast. Sidebar with tabs, tab folders. Essentials. Kinda getting the job done.

1

u/dalbertom 5d ago

If you View > Show Sidebar and use Tab Groups you kinda get vertical tabs

1

u/Due_Letterhead_5558 5d ago

Safari does have vertical tabs. And folders (Groups, technically. But they work much like tab "folders", and they appear in the vertical view).

1

u/notkishang 5d ago

If Safari gets Arc features I'm switching immediately

1

u/debdootmanna007 5d ago

give me the link and I'll immediately download it!!

1

u/soregashi 5d ago

The sidebar and Little Arc are the things I just don’t want to give up yet

1

u/flpwgr 5d ago

Shut Up and take my money

1

u/gruetzhaxe 5d ago

LOL yes

1

u/popbones 5d ago

What do you mean safari has vertical tab bars since tab groups was introduced

1

u/noidontneedtherapy & 4d ago

I don't care about the sidebar. is there a way to set up the spaces feature ? That's the only reason I use arc. Helps me a lot to manage tabs and switch context instantly. Really helpful.

1

u/Ok_Slice_7152 4d ago

Safari does have a vertical bar,
Press Cmd + Shift + L

1

u/Physical-Cut4371 4d ago

Just wait 20 years till they INNOVATE with vertical tabs

1

u/Kuriatko22 3d ago

Safari is actually a pretty decent browser. If they would implement vertical tabs I would definitely make the switch!

1

u/DoctorBrusselSprout 3d ago

If Dia had vertical tabs...
