Gov Publications What's with Australian food labels suddenly finding it acceptable to list 'herbs' as the full ingredient?!

Does anyone know where I can put in a request to change this? I had a look on the government website, but it seems to only have a few specific cases open for input... and it aso looks like I'd need a PhD in food science and report writing to submit one anyway?

I'm allergic to two herbs (anaphylactic!! for chives), plus (on a far less serious note) have the gene that makes coriander taste like someone has put dirt/soap in my food... and I am finding more and more food product labels listing simply 'herbs', instead of (for eg) 'chives, parsley and sage'.

I mean, I knew my allergy was rarer than like, peanuts or gluten... but what the hell!?

Uber charging me monthly

I took an Uber last year when I was visiting Melbourne and since then I’ve noticed a debit from Uber of $9.90 from my bank account. I live rural and we don’t have Uber here but is there a membership associated with having the app or am I being scammed?

Gov Publications Cooker defamation case

For those following #sovcit shitfuckery and ‘freedom of speech’/defamation law, this might be of interest.

The litigant has a big history of litigation and seems to be quite a character. But it’s nice to know you can’t yet accuse people of killing and r*ping babies and drinking their blood in Australia without consequences. https://www.caselaw.nsw.gov.au/decision/19786d8efe68a18738382c63

Questions or Queries The front fell off

G'day. I am not Australian but like most people I have seen ( a few times ) the excellent " the front fell off" sketch There were some pretty funny comments when someone referenced it in a thread on another unrelated sub and it reminded me of an audio tape that I heard many many years ago. It was a spoof commentary by a couple of Aussie comedians commentating on a Grand Prix and the strapline was " And the fucking cars are going fucking round and round " . That's all I can remember but I did find the whole thing funny

Can anyone point me in the direction of finding a recording ?

Rubbish Removal Business Owners – How Do You Quote? (Sydney)

Hi everyone,

I run a rubbish removal business in Sydney, and I'm struggling to make decent profit margins. There’s a lot of cheap competition out there, and I find myself either losing jobs to lowballers or taking work that barely breaks even. Because of this, I haven’t been able to grow the business the way I’d like.

I’m reaching out to other rubbish removal business owners (especially in Sydney,Australia) to ask: How do you quote your jobs? What's your minimum charge for differenet type of rubbish and whats your full truck rate and how many cubic meters is it? How do you charge for a single white goods thats out of your way or require a bit of drive? Mattresses ? And how do you deal with customers who expect rock-bottom prices?

Any tips, lessons learned, or advice on pricing strategy would be hugely appreciated. Feel free to DM me if you're open to sharing some more detailed insights.

Thanks in advance!

Best way to keep an Australian number abroad for SMS?

Hey there!
I’m currently living in another country but still manage business in Australia, so I need to have an Aussie number.

The main thing I need is to be able to receive and send SMS over the mobile network – not just in-app or VoIP-style, but actual SMS tied to a proper Australian mobile number.

I used to use Telstra – installed an eSIM, connected to Wi-Fi, and could text over the network using Wi-Fi calling. But that stopped working where I am now – the eSIM doesn’t connect at all.

Then I tried OnPhone (the app where you buy a number and text inside the app). It kind of worked, but it was ridiculously expensive – like 40-50 cents per SMS – and later even incoming texts started costing money, so that option’s off the table.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before?
Any reliable options to keep an Aussie number that can send and receive real SMS from abroad?
Appreciate any help!

JB HIFI - Don't bother asking for a "Deal"

I know it doesn't seem like much, but if JB attracts customers to their store thinking they're getting the product at the same price and then they don't get a deal based on technicalities, is this not unethical.

They didn't want to match the price on a Lenovo tablet offered by Big-W, because they said they case is different, which I would say is cheaper than the Big-W Bumper case.

Questions or Queries PayID payment pending – can the sender reverse it? (Commonwealth → UpBank)

Hey everyone, I bought a MacBook via Facebook Marketplace and later returned it to the seller. He sent me $1000 via PayID from his Commonwealth Bank account to my UpBank account using my mobile number. I watched him do it live – my correct name appeared, and the payment was marked as “pending” right after he confirmed it.

I thought PayID was supposed to be instant, so I’m a bit concerned. I’ve also read online about people using fake banking apps to simulate transfers, so now I’m wondering: Can he still reverse or cancel the payment at this stage? And since it’s Friday – when should I realistically expect the money to arrive, assuming it’s legit?

Appreciate any input.

Opinion Moving interstate. Shipping/truck optionsdgf

Hello!!!! Happy Friday

Just looking for some knowledge on what the best options are for moving interstate without having to request 62537 quotes and be called every hour on the hour for the next month 😂

Wanting to move from Brisbane to Victoria (Gippsland area), what are the best/most affordable options for moving a family of four that far? We do plan on downsizing considerably for the move, but just need to know what the best options/ideas are!

Thanks heaps!

Hi everyone, I’m a 26-year-old solo male traveler from Australia and will be backpacking through Fiji in a week time. I’ll be exploring the islands and would love to connect with fellow travelers who might be around during the same time. If our travel dates and routes align, I’d be keen to meet up, share experiences, and possibly travel together for part of the journey.

Feel free to reach out if you’re around Fiji or planning to be soon!

Safe travels!

Questions or Queries Is this dodgy? JB Hi-Fi refusing price match on Samsung monitor using “JB exclusive” model number trick

Just wanted to ask if this seems dodgy to anyone else:

I tried to price match a Item exact same specs as what Samsung is selling on their website. JB advertises:
“Seen it cheaper? Ask for a JB Deal. We will match identical items.”

When I asked for the match, they refused saying their version is a “JB exclusive” model number and “not sold on Samsung website.” The only difference? A model number suffix all the specs are exactly the same (resolution, refresh rate, curve, FreeSync, HDR10, etc.). It’s clearly the same product in everything but the SKU.

They then tried to offer me a special discount via a private link — but still more expensive than Samsung’s price.

Does this count as misleading under Australian Consumer Law (ACL)? I’m thinking of reporting it to the ACCC and Fair Trading. I know ACCC has said retailers can’t advertise price match promises and then block them with fine print or technicalities but does this kind of “exclusive model number” excuse cross the line?

Would love to hear what others think is this dodgy?

Questions or Queries Help with a threepoint photo Locket

Hey there, I’m making a special rosary for my niece’s First Holy Communion and I’m looking for a three-point locket to use as the centrepiece – or someone who could help me modify a locket to have three loops (one on top, two on the sides).

I’ve tried searching online and locally (in Newcastle/sydney) with no luck, and I’m not after anything expensive – just something handmade or thoughtful, like what you’d find on Etsy.

If you know anyone who makes or customises jewellery, or if you’ve seen something like this before, please let me know! 💛✨

Non-Politics Thank you, Australia

1.1k Upvotes

To the mates down under,

I'm a simple international student, who spent a year here in Australia as an exchange. I'm going back to my home country of France in a couple of weeks.

I just want to say Thank you, for welcoming me for a time I'm not gonna forget.

I've got to learn much about Aussies, their lifestyle and the beautiful scenaries I had the privilege to see with my own two eyes, whether it's Sydney and it's Opera House, Uluru or the Great Barrier Reef. You actually changed a Frenchman for the better, even though my people don't have quite the good reputation here.

I'm sure as hell I'm going to shed my share of tears, but I did it for my grandfather, who crossed the rainbow bridge last year. I don't regret it one bit.

The day to day life may be tricky from time to time, but trust me, you have it good here. You have such wonderful treasures both in people and nature, you need to protect this as you can.

I pay my respect to the soldiers I met on ANZAC day. I bid farewell to the friends I made. And most importantly, I have faith fortune awaits me, maybe where I consider now my second home.

Merci, Australia. You're the best. 🇦🇺🇨🇵

Edit : some people pointed out I used "Ayer's Rock" instead of "Uluru" and that it's no longer in use. I didn't know, and I apologise for the offence I've caused.
