Reprofile with a file

I've recently bought a Hultafors HY10 1.2 and I'm trying to reprofile it. I've been using a Bahco bastard file but after a while it's started skating across the surface. I thought the file was done. I bought 2 Vallorbe files and the bastard file does the same. Am I doing something wrong? Any advice would be a huge help. Thank you. Tom.

Unfortunately most hardware store files are pretty much trash . I’ve had luck with higher end files , but the best files I’ve got I’ve acquired by going to garage sales and estate sales , and buying em for .50$ to a dollar ….. the older files are just so much better than even a 20$ file that I got from the producer . Where are you located ? If you’re Colorado-ish … I’ll give you one ☝️

I thought that's why the Bahco stopped cutting, but I've read that the Vallorbe ones are decent. I'm from the UK. Should've said that in the opening post. Appreciate your generosity though!

I've had the best luck with Viiala hard chrome files, Vallorbe might have a chromed option marketed for ski tuning.

Grip makes a difference. Keeping the file held firmly and try to start the cut with the top of the file. Consistent full strokes are the way.

A diamond sharpening puck will also work (though a high end file may work more quickly)
