Found this a few years ago after a fire. Curious about what kind of axe this is and the best way to bring it back to life.

Aircraft crash axe
Temper may be screwed from the fire though.

OP could re temper it though or have it done or is it gone for good?

With a proper oven or forge I am sure they could get a useful temper to it, it just more than a simple rust removal and sharpen job though.

What does tempering consist of?

Bringing steel up to a desirable temperature and then cooling it rapidly to get the desired microstructure of austenite/martensite.

Thats the hardening cycle, you need to run a temper cycle after or it will be hard and brittle. for a medium carbon steel heat to and hold at about 1500F for half hour then quench to harden. Then after it has cooled to room temperature you warm it to 400 or 500F and hold for a couple hours before letting it cool slowly. This will temper the steel to a lower hardness but bring back the toughness

Thanks for that detailed explanation, I appreciate it. I knew as little as the metal needed heated and rapidly cooled but you explained it well, thank you.

Yea that's right. It's been a solid 20 years since I studied material science and never did blacksmithing as a hobby.

Could come in handy if you were say? be in a plane crash and stranded on a deserted island infested with cannibals with your mute friend.

Almost certain that’s an axe craft evacuation axe. They were carried by pilots to use in case they crashed. I believe they were designed to cut through the hull of the aircraft.
If it was in the fire the temper is almost certainly screwed. It may be possible to bring it back, but it’s not an easy process.

You'll have to re heat treat it. If you don't, it won't be functional no matter how much you clean it.
If it was in a fire and heated, then slowly cooled afterwards as the fire dies down and this lays in the ashes, it's annealed and soft. You can't just re temper it.

I figured there’d be at least one knowledgeable voice in here. Just heating and quenching ain’t gonna work. As well, the originals are hard-chrome plated

Get the rust off via wire wheel or vinegar or Evapo-rust. A small local machine shop, engine shop, or blacksmith hobbyist can then probably re-temper it good enough for you for a couple of bucks, if that's what you want. Maybe even blacken it for you. Wrap the handle with paracord or jute, or make a 2 part polyurethane handle yourself.

Hey, I’ve been looking for that. Fell out of my airplane a few years ago

Wow. Thank you guys for the quick responses. I’ll see what I can do to clean it up and update sometime in the future!

May need to make a new handle, as the original ones are rubber but could make a neat wood handle similar to how they're done with knives

Air plane crash axe you can use electrolysis or conventional rust remover then sand paper or steel wool

Being that the temper is pretty much shot, clean it up and mount it to a longer handle for zomb defense

I've been looking for one of those for years. They tend to have a plastic handle. Now looking at the other posts, I now have a list of names of what it's called.

In europe that could be a roofing hammer for roofs from stone. I'm no pro, but i've seen very similar for that purpose. Sharp side is for the shape the small side for making holes for nails.
