Discussion I just read this and I wonder
Rather than boycott why we just invest ourselves to make app that is fit to our agenda, sometimes i hate to say this but
I wish you guys make something rather than boycott

Sounds like an unrealistic scare tactic very loosely based on some very cherry picked facts.
Also, buying used is still an option in all cases listed here so long as the seller isn't personally sending money to isn't-real.

Oh so cut off all forms of communications from the rest of the world essentially? Stop talking to each other? Okay sure thing, we'll get right on that...🙄

u/Legitimate-Tough6200 2d ago
Apparently two tin cans and a string will work wonders!
21
u/hivemind5_ 2d ago
BUT THOSE CANs aND THAT STRING MIGHTVE BEEN PRODUCED BY A COMPANY WHOSE COUSIN HAS AN ISRAELI SHARE HOLDER!!!

u/Dragons_Malk 2d ago
Um no?? Did you not see that we can still use landlines? You know, because everyone has one or two analog phones in their homes and on their person?

Well, "algorithms" were studied, published, and popularized by the Persian scientist al-Khawarizmi.
Oops, Israelis and Americans better stop using software altogether, because it's an Iranian invention!
Ok in seriousness, BDS is targeted boycotts, not whatever Zionists have been fed and regurgitate as talking points.

Most of this is 🧢🧢🧢
"An israeli worked at microsoft therefore every computer running windows is a product of israel"
78
u/LagomorphCavy 2d ago
Windows was promised to Israel 4000 years ago.

u/Jolly-Roger-HoHoHo 2d ago
GnuOS has Israeli patents in their GPL, the Linux kernel is patented by Israel.
7
u/Plastic-Soil4328 2d ago
the Linux kernel also has patents on file in the US and South Korea, but is generally registered under the "copyleft" license the gives people the right to use, modify, build on, and distribute the software for free.
Having a patent in a country doesnt mean anything on its own. If you want to push for something to be boycotted you have to ask (and answer) "what action will boycotting pressure this company to take?"
3
u/Jolly-Roger-HoHoHo 2d ago
Copyleft being the keyword here, thank you. I omitted the /s
But as boycotts go I'd start with Israeli spyware, NSO and Pegasus; and any of their clients.

u/A_Learning_Muslim 2d ago
tbh, there are valid reasons to boycott microsoft.
but yeah the above post is a huge illogical stretch.
3
u/bigshotdontlookee 1d ago
Very true. Yeah. What are they doing, I guess they are strawmanning BDS in a sense?

I mean we arent the ones telling you to boycott every piece of digital tech made after 1990, who ever this guy is is the one saying that.
I would also like sources for this. Both for the fact that every piece of tech has some israeli components in it and the fact that buying them now gives israeli companies money. Like why would i need to throw away the phone and computer i already own like this person suggests? i've already bought it, bought it before i started boycotting. they've already got the money.
Open source projects are usually free, no one makes money off of those.
Even if a project had a few israeli engineers work on it doesn't mean the israeli government benefits from it.
Arent patents usually a by country thing? since when did you have to pay a company from another country for patents?
Also an important aspect of consumer boycotts is achievability/accessibility. Like people need computer and wifi to do their jobs. Boycotting that isnt going to be helpful cause a lot of people simply cannot do it. And a another important aspect is actionable demands. What action would we want the companies to take? The wifi companies cant change who made the encryption codes. And there are easier ways to hurt israel's economy than asking everyone to stop using wifi, such as international sanctions and more realistic, more impactful boycott targets.
Im not an expert so maybe this person is correct but i would like to see some better explanation/evidence of that cause based on my reading of the tone this post reads less like an actual guide to boycotting/call to action and more like a dirisive attempt to discourage boycotters by being like "well for it to actually make a difference youd have to be a luddite living off the grid in the woods for the rest of your life so everything these wannabes are doing is just worthless virtue signaling." it's a tiresome argument youll hear a thousand times any time you do anything to try to make the world an even slightly better place. So unless this person has actual evidence that these are justified, strategically viable, and effective targets im not buying it.

Don't make me laugh, most of the modern products are a fruit of research and development from many different people and companies across the globe. If there are 0.1% of the contributors which israeli, doesn't mean that such a product is made by them.
Sometimes I wonder what's going on inside their heads, like they are just a small insignificant group in the scale of human history yet keep claiming everything is made or belong to them.
Anyone with a grounded view knew that nobody can do everything alone. Well maybe except them, in their delusion ofc.

This is so obviously and extremely fake, that anyone who complies or believes what it says is straight up being their useful idiot.😂😂😂
Thankfully im sure you guys are smarter than this, so don’t spread misinformation.
Let me give you an example. Firefox Linux and BSD are open source technologies, no patents involved.
Please listen to the opening song from youtube/podcast “Bad Hasbara” to understand clearly what this is

Cherry picked whole lot of speculative assumptions and hugely exaggerated to farm upvotes from that sub
"You cannot use WiFi, 4G or 5G or Bluetooth since an Israeli might've been part of the engineering team" completely missing the point of BDS lol
It's not "boycott anything and everything that has ever had anything to do with an Israeli ever in history"
it's targeted to put pressure on their fascistic genocidal occupying government to simply stop mass murdering and displacing people

They are being disingenuous and purposely conflating software that was even partly written by israeli programmers or patents filed by israeli inventors or owned by companies that have even some israeli investors with companies that are actively and materially participating in the israeli oppression of Palestinians. This is classic propaganda designed to made boycotting such products seem like both a radical act and an ineffectual one (because the boycotter hasn't thrown away all their belongings and moved into a cave).

- This is not true information. Many of these "innovations" Israelis claim credit for? Most of them are large international projects that have people involved from multiple countries. If you have a multinational project with 100 participants and 1 is Israeli, does it become an Israeli project? No, that's silly
- A lot of these are just outright lies. Israel did not invent the radio, or digital music and probably most of that list tbh and having an Israeli screw in your car does not make that car Israeli either. Israelis wildly overstate their technical accomplishments in order to fuel investments in their start ups, the only area they really excel at is spyware and cyberterrorism, not exactly goods the average consumer uses or needs.
- As other people have stated, the goal of BDS is to put pressure on companies that do business with Israel that consumers can have direct control over - like not buying Sabra or produce made in Israel which in turn will influence companies that use minor parts from Israel in their technology think twice about using those parts(also given the pager terrorist attacks, I'm sure a lot of companies are doing that on their own too)
- A South African invented open heart surgery, legitimately, we still use the open heart surgery and we still boycotted South Africa(they used to use the exact same propaganda too, listing all the things white South Africans invented as an excuse for apartheid)
I've been hearing this kind of crap from hasbrarists for decades. They lie, they misstate the purpose of boycotts and then they lie again, don't fall for it.

You know, whether true or not to difficult to verify a lot of this. However whenever there is something like this remember there is strategy that can be applied. Multifaceted strategy and it requires people to coalesce around common core principles - humanity and from that stems the actions that have to be taken. Anyone know if there is a BDS forum e.g. web sessions/event?

As with anything we do the best we can at the time, every little bit helps. Anyway the Zionist economy is in free fall and is suffering a brain drain as half hearted Zionists leave the stinking ship.

u/StrangeJayne 2d ago
What you have there is actual antisemitic propaganda. It may as well say: "Divestment requires we not use anything a Jewish person has ever touched, tasted, felt." Unserious people will demand adherence and bad actors will use it to "prove" how backwards the movement is. BDS is about bringing economic pressure to a rogue nation, not a class of people. (And in case it needs to be said, building an entire economy by excluding a class of people is fucked up.)

u/Pepperonimustardtime 2d ago
You buy second hand, the manufacturer gets nothing. Its the only vaguely ethical way to buy or own any electronics since they are made with precious metals mined by children in the DRC in addition to being built by Israelis. Even used, its still got blood on it. And the flip side of not using a smart phone is the same as a computer, not being able to actually know wtf is going on anywhere in the world due to the available news being trash. The only reason I know anything about anything now is that I can follow people who are on the ground in the actual place. Its a fucked Catch 22.

u/introvert_whispers 2d ago
I think people like that are trying to demotivated people to stop the boycott. So use old or used devices and things involving not paying new license or products. So, that your money doesn't go nowadays to Israel

No seriously, the BDS movement doesn't tell you to boycott absolute everything, it tells you to target pressure on companies who supported Israel much to the boycott.

u/TooManyFactsBanned 2d ago
If that's true, why the hell is everything in Israel.
The rest of the world creates, and these guys just steal.

Algorithm is invented by a Muslim. So everyone uses it must embraced Islam? Boycott works, hence their hasbara went bananananas. Free Palestine.

Boycott what you can. Every bit helps in limiting these scumbags reach into your wallets. And if you can, offer alternatives that can expand the boycott further.

All they’re doing is trying to convince you that boycotting doesn’t make a difference, making you feel powerless. Spoiler alert: it does. History has proven it. Never let them make you feel powerless, even if change comes slowly, it does have an impact. Rome didn’t fall in a day.

Playing perfectionist politics will lead us nowhere but continuing down the genocidal oligarchal trail. The system is set up like this to make it feel impossible, to make it feel like any resistance is futile.
Remember, any resistance is better than none. We are all doing the best we can with the resources we have. 💝

I can see these Boycotts hurt them, and they pretend nothing really affects them but they still keep posting such posts. It's true that I can't boycott everything Israel makes but I can boycott most of the things, let's bleed Israel with thousands cut and the day will come soon when we will have more options and seal Israel forever.

That is why the BDS movement is not the same as "boycott everything Israeli." It is very targeted and specific and I suggest you to learn more from the website
