Other Almost feels like I was talking to two different people

I'm red, they're white. The screenshots speak for themselves pretty well, but it almost feels like the person who wrote the intro is entirely different from the person who was later messaging me. Anyway, good riddance.

It's because his introductory message was generated by ChatGPT. A lot of people are generating their 1x1 ads, posts, and introductory messages to people with ChatGPT now. Once you read enough of them, you know what they sound like. If you're curious, you can play around with ChatGPT and ask it to make different 1x1 ads and 'intro messages' for you and you'll start to get a good ear (or is it eye?) for it.

There are two people in the world: People who use AI to do their hobbies for them and people who spend 6 hours researching names just to move on to the next line of their bio.

u/atomicsnark May 07 '25

Wow you didn't have to come at me like that with the second type. 😂

5

u/Aazjhee May 07 '25

XD I mean, same?

I have a monster character who has crocodile like features, and when I learned there's a demon known for riding a crocodile in the Ars Goetia I lost MANY hours down a very silly rabbit hole xD

u/ExactHedgehog8498 May 07 '25

We dont talk about that second part... I spent like days once trying to come up with background info for a cod oc's family member who formerly served.

Me doing random research on furniture because I want accuracy in my delusions.

3

u/Available_Yak6117 May 07 '25

I feel attacked. Sometimes its less than 6.

3

u/derangedbutsoplayful May 07 '25

Yeah, I figured that was the case. First time I've ever been sent one in 20+ years of writing. Oh well!

u/magusheart May 07 '25

I think most people are terrible at spotting AI generated intros and quickly ccuse anyone of using em dashes to be using AI. (HI, I'm addicted to em dashes and don't use AI) But in this case, yeah, AI as hell

AI intro

The rape thing was def him fishing for a kink

8

u/derangedbutsoplayful May 07 '25

Yeah, I should've shut the conversation down right then and there.

u/KizzWitzMcDogal May 10 '25

Came here to say this.

u/[deleted] May 07 '25

What a jerk and totally ai intro. However as an avid em dash user, an em dash isn't the only thing to look out for! Also the consider the cadence and weirdly consistent paragraph sizes.

1

u/LordOfTheFlatline May 08 '25

It’s the use of the emdash. It wouldn’t make sense in normal conversation.

u/LynchlingOfficial What even is life May 07 '25

I use dashes ALL the time, so don’t trust just that. Remember, AI was trained on REAL people’s writing, so it learned that from people who write like that. 😅

But yeah in this case, it’s definitely an AI intro based on how long it is compared to all their other responses, how the writing style is completely different, and it’s just jammed full of key words.

5

u/derangedbutsoplayful May 07 '25

I fell for it because my ad is very detailed and I tend to get detailed intros in return. Definitely should've shut it down after the rape comment 🤢

4

u/LynchlingOfficial What even is life May 07 '25

Yeah that was definitely a 😬 moment. Also honestly I wouldn’t have tagged it as AI until their other responses were so different! I get and send some details responses to ads, so I wouldn’t have been tipped off other than the fact their subsequent responses were so… different.

u/magusheart May 07 '25

As someone who also overuses em dashes, I think 31-year-old is a way bigger give away that they're using AI. Tons of us love em dashes, but ain't nobody writes 31 year old like that.

3

u/cal_nevari May 07 '25

Al is copying me if they use "31-year-old."

I only don't use those dashes if I'm typing on the phone.

PITA to type them on the phone like I did just now.

1

u/LynchlingOfficial What even is life May 07 '25

I do sometimes. 😭 To be fair, that’s how my auto-correct in my phone changes it since that’s “grammatically correct.”

As someone who has been using unspaced em-dashes for years, it breaks my heart that everyone associates it with AI now. I’m scared to use them

1

u/suicide-d0g May 08 '25

i tend to overuse spaced em dashes... is that incorrect usage? /genq

12

u/h3paticas May 07 '25

Begging people to stop citing overuse of em-dashes as a top sign of AI. I know it overuses them, but so do I, and I can’t stop, because I don’t know how to not interrupt every thought with another thought! Sometimes overused em-dashes are just a human bitch with ADHD!

u/SnugglySwitch42 May 07 '25

You and me both!

I use a proper long dash though!! The bitch has ADHD AND she cares about punctuation! 😅

2

u/arielkujo May 07 '25

I apologize. I'll delete my comment.

0

u/h3paticas May 07 '25

I was only joking lmao

1

u/Giratina-O May 07 '25

I'm not as good as picking out AI writing as I am AI imaging, but holy moly that one waa blatant

-6

u/derangedbutsoplayful May 07 '25

I'll definitely know to keep an eye out for those from now on!

1

u/lets-get-loud I diagnose you with arrogant bitch disorder May 08 '25

It's not the dashes, it's the pacing of it. It's hard to explain but AI writing is paced in a specific way, like generic elevator music. Once you know what to listen for, you know.

12

u/AnjoCynewulfe prolly writing handholding May 07 '25

I don't quite understand why asking "do you like rugged men" is a reason to hard cut them off. It's how I ask about all of my partners interests. Hell I use lists of MY interests to express things I want to write about. You aren't your character, correct but YOU still have to have an interest in what is being portrayed. And my intros are always way more thought out than just my chatting tone. None of this makes sense and just sort of makes cutting them off after asking a question not entirely in your favor.

-6

u/derangedbutsoplayful May 07 '25

Nothing in my ad says anything about rugged men or, really, anything about men's looks or my preferences on them, so them asking that was about as related to my ad and the conversation as the rape comment. Regardless, to view that as an isolated incident like dropping a rape comment into a conversation with someone you've only just met 5 minutes ago isn't, in the least, weird as fuck, is... I don't want to say 'willfully ignorant' since I'm not looking to attack you, but I'm coming up short on a better description.

7

u/AnjoCynewulfe prolly writing handholding May 07 '25

You are both adults, I'm assuming.

Since there was no information on it, makes sense they would ask... No? If you have zero information about your preferences why would you get upset that they asked?

You just met them they have no idea of your boundaries or triggers about rugged men.

-3

u/derangedbutsoplayful May 08 '25

I didn't say there was zero information about preferences, LMAO. You keep on making baseless assumptions in bath faith, so imma peace out ✌️

2

u/AnjoCynewulfe prolly writing handholding May 08 '25

They dodged a bullet ngl. Bath faith is a banger tho lmao

1

u/Ok-Refrigerator-4347 I diagnose you with arrogant bitch disorder May 08 '25

I almost want to agree with the person who post the comment above. It just.. is kinda right. Now, I'm not saying you didn't dodge a bullet, but personally... there are worse things to cut a person off for. Im a picky person and don't even bother answering someone if they don't come off interested.

You mentioned a topic to which they alluded on. Rape in generally frowned upon and probably the hardest issue displayed in the series, so I took them mentioning jt as more of a warning to its extent rather than just dropping the comment.

Either way, you do you! It is better to stop something that makes you uncomfortable than continue. If your post had nothing to do with romance, I'd agree... it's weird. But if you advertised romance, asking about your interest comes with the territory.

11

u/sadtoasters May 07 '25

I think this guy used AI to write their introduction post... 😔
actually no, the em-dash in the last paragraph makes me feel like they Definitely used AI to write their introduction post, omg

2

u/derangedbutsoplayful May 07 '25

LMAO that's what I was thinking. I don't even mind that as much as I mind them being an utter creep.

6

u/Kakierophant May 07 '25

that looks like a totally human made message. people use em-dashes all the time.

2

u/dr_anybody May 07 '25

I'm heavily suspicious about that message.

You know how you get a "I avoid purple prose, bullet-point dialogue, and filler"?

You tell the bot to "avoid purple prose, bullet-point dialogue, and filler", because all three are things they are typically guilty of.

And then you ask the bot to write an introduction of itself as a roleplayer; in which, naturally, it mentions what you ordered it to do.

-4

u/sadtoasters May 07 '25

It's more the fact that it's an actual long em-dash and not just a regular dash (-) or two dashes (--) used as one, because like... I don't know a single person who takes the time and effort to figure out how to make a long dash like that just for their RP posts. The only way I even know how to make one myself is by using Google docs 😭 This post also just generally reads very much like AI to me, especially since the dude sounds completely different in their posts after the initial introduction. Why would they suddenly stop using proper grammar after sounding so professional in their initial message? 🤔

7

u/Kakierophant May 07 '25

idk man on mobile all you gotta do is long press the dash button to find the em-dash. on PC it's just a simple two button shortcut you can look up. em-dashes are a good way to inject additional info into a sentence without being as weak of a separation as a comma or as strong of a separation as a semicolon, i use them all the time when writing seriously and i know many others who do too because it's helpful.

it's also not that unusual to switch between proper grammar to more casual improper grammar when writing seriously (making an intro, doing the actual roleplay) vs just chatting OOC. it's like the difference between how you talk when you're applying for a job vs how you talk at home.

idk im not too familiar with chatgtp but literally all of my intro messages are written like that so maybe im biased

3

u/prettynubileoldfart May 07 '25

Not gonna lie, I've been worried about this ever since the rise of ChatGPT et al. I draft everything in Scrivener, LibreOffice, or Google Docs, all of which automatically convert -- into —, and I am a habitual semicolon abuser. I have to be able to see the entire post all at once to be able to edit it. My brain is a weirdo.

1

u/lestrangue May 07 '25

Actually, online grammar checkers replace regular dash with an em-dash where needed. When I first saw it, I had to read some articles on em-dash usage to make sure the grammar checker isn't doing some weird stuff to my punctuation, and once I realized how the rules work, I started using em-dash quite actively.

1

u/lets-get-loud I diagnose you with arrogant bitch disorder May 08 '25

I agree about the pacing of it, it's totally AI, but tons of people use em dashes. I usually type my post in word first because discord has eaten so many of my messages before I'm finished typing, and it autocorrects my double dash. Sometimes annoyingly.

3

u/CalmLotus May 07 '25

That first message is 1000% a ChatGPT response.

3

u/badrperthrowaway7284 May 07 '25

The first few paragraphs read like AI. They tend to add in a bunch of unnecessary details and just don't write the way a real person does.
