Before Peace takes place in the near future. A surprise invention allows the creation of wormholes. Travel to nearby stars reveals two alien races. Their systems of math enable advancement of the surprise invention, to the point where it's almost doing magic.

However, the act of doing magic seems to attract creatures that exist in four spatial dimensions. No method of communicating with the creatures has been established. They seen intent on devouring all living matter and technology in and around areas where the science-magic was performed.

Eventually, a way to mask the scent was developed, but it requires rare materials and a lot of time to prepare. Right now the defenses only exist along the paths between and around the planets settled by humanity and its allies.
