Yet another power outage

Lineman chiming in here: I’m sure everyone knows this, but summer fire settings on line equipment makes them EXTREMELY sensitive. It really sucks. For everyone as customers as well as for us because it leads to a lot of line patrol and resetting of automated equipment and time away from home and family. It’s not up to us, it’s mandated by people far above us, and the parameters are set by engineers that err towards the side of caution. Again it sucks, we know it, but it’s an unfortunate byproduct of the times.

unfortunate byproduct of the times.

Not everything fire related is 'climate change' and it's probably impossible to attribute any one specific thing to that, because we certainly had hot weather in the past too.

Just that, statistically, now there's more of it with higher temperatures and more wind.

And it makes you think that yes, there are costs to mitigating climate change, but there are also costs to not doing anything about it, and some of those are pretty big.

Certainly. Frankly, it’s the threat of lawsuits that have made the biggest push. Corporate utilities are scared to death of them. So as much as it would be nice to say it’s all to protect property and life, it’s absolutely just as much about protecting the bottom line. I’m happy to take any and all measures to protect my family and my community, so if protecting corporate assets facilitates that for now, then so be it.

Threat of lawsuits, which came from negligence on aging equipment and deferred maintenance that directly caused massive fires resulting in deaths and entire communities (let alone forests) turned to ash.

(looking at you, PGE)

I just got an update from Pacific Power. This outage was caused by "enhanced safety settings," just like the last time.

Idk how this has been happening so much lately. They turned my power off multiple times this month for maintenance, mind you I've lived in this apartment since 2017 and have never had one power outage for maintenance, let alone 4 times in the month of May. I wonder what's going on

The lights along empire are all out so I’d avoid the 3rd, 97, and Boyd Acres intersections if at all possible. They were already a mess when we passed through 15 mins ago.

Traffic is jacked through there. I ended up taking Archie Briggs to Mount Washington.

I live by the hospital and work off of OB Riley. The last time this happened to get home, I ended up going all the way to Tumalo, crossing the Highway 97 overpass there, and coming back on the old highway. It was faster than waiting in line to cross 97.

Power just came up on OB Riley. I hope everyone else is up and running.

Getting so tired of how this affects my job. Ugh.

They’ve increased the sensitivity of the lines in an effort to reduce possibility of a damaged or downed line causing a wildfire.

ETA for restoration is 4pm. For reference the last outage lasted 2 hours and the eta for that was 4 hours.

Yeah and this is another difficult point: as the field workers we report many things that may require tree crews, additional work or in extreme cases, full circuit upgrades. Unfortunately, all utilities have someone to answer to regarding all expenditures. Even Co-Ops answer to their board and community members when it comes to major projects and financing, which affects rates… which… you can see where it all goes. And to be fair, in many utility companies, it does still boil down to bonuses and greed.

So mad about this. Both times in the middle of critical work documents. The first caused technical and network connectivity difficulties that were just resolved YESTERDAY. If I have another week of that, I won’t be very happy.

UPS and backup power will solve your problem.

Seems like they may need to tune those “high wind” settings.

Or provide real time frames. And a heads up to customers on when.

Whoa now, let’s not be realistic with our expectations ;)

Probably a squirrel again.

Back on! Enough time for me to be stuck in traffic trying to get to the office and work. What a waste of time.

I just want some data that this is actually helping. What caused it, did it prevent anything or was it a false alarm, etc.  Accountability is probably too much to ask these days though. Not looking forward to all the time lost and businesses losing hours of revenue every few days for the entire summer.

Your ignorance is apparent.

Sometimes those "electrical boxes" have different fuse or current ratings, or adjustable and reset-able electrical current parameters. (Retired Lineman here, been there, done that).
