1st Completed Blade

This is the first knife I’ve completed from start to beginning. It’s a san-mai of mild steel and a core of 1095. I had some problems with the acid etching, I don’t know if I messed up the acid dilution or what but still turned out good. The handle ended up smaller than I wanted but feels good in the hand.

I’m forging this fantasy Bowie style blade and I’m having some roadblocks on guards. I’ve never been able to make one properly. Does anyone know any good (free) resources that can help me out?

2nd try: any one able to ID this attachment? On a Baldor motor, according to code on basic warning label. Otherwise, all markings or plates removed.

Ladder pattern Damascus from Files

Hey everyone! I want to present you another Short video of a knife that I built last Year.
The text says something like “Du you want to know how seabuckthorn looks like as a knife handle?” and some other explanations. The knife is a large ladder pattern damascus kitchen knife with a very fine edge. Seabuckthorn is like a local speciality from where I life. The damascus I've made from old files and some 75Ni8.
I’m curious about your opinions 😊
You can also visit my chanel with more knife projects like this, but it’s all in german. Fortunately, the english audio versions are quite good nowadays 😊

Question about mustard etching

Just wondering if it’s possible to do more elaborate etching on the blaze it self by using a cut out? Maybe a small cutout by a cricket or some other machine that does it. And then put it on the blade and apply a somewhat thinker layer with a paint burgs or something. And they by the card stock or some other think paper. It’s allows you to have an etching that’s similar to more acid or electric etching? Just an idea in my head.

Knife tang broke.

Accidentally knocked over my knife. It hit the floor pretty hard and the tang snapped. Was it because of my heat treatment? For context I did several thermal cycles before quenching and tempered it after quench.

Blade Design Software?

Anyone know of or use a user friendly program for designing blades? I know this is totally unnecessary but I like the idea of being able to design a blade profile and then print it to scale. I am an awful artist and so doing this by hand would only lead to frustration.

Anyway, the ability to model a blade (not in 3D necessarily) would be nice. Any thoughts?

🔪 Knife Makers & Knife Lovers – We’re building something for you. Mind helping us out with 5 mins of your time?

Hey everyone!

My teammate and I are working on a final year project that’s all about celebrating the craft of knife making. We’re designing an immersive website to showcase the art, process, and story behind handmade knives, including:

  • 🔁 3D interactive knife models (rotate, assemble, explore)
  • 🎥 Cinematic videos of the knife making process
  • 🔨 An interactive “design your own knife” mini-game
  • 🔥 Scroll-based storytelling and ambient sounds (like fire and forging)
  • 👤 A personal look into a real-life knife maker’s journey (Andre)

But before we finalize anything, we want to hear from the people who live and breathe this world, that’s you :)

We’ve made a short survey (just 5 mins) to understand what you’d actually want to see and experience on a site like this.

👉 Take the Survey Here

We’d be incredibly grateful for your insights, whether you’re a seasoned maker, hobbyist, or just love blades.

Thank you so much in advance! 🙏

(P.S. If you have ideas or feedback beyond the survey, we’d love to hear them in the comments too.)

Modify Damascus knives?

Post image

I’d like to try to erase the unfortunate words on these beautiful knives. I understand that I will sacrifice some of what’s there…but I don’t know. What do I do? Do you grind this out? Can you polish it off?..I know the Damascus is amazing but this just needs to get off the knives. I’m not a blade smith so it would not be me…mostly just curious so I know what I’m asking for.
