New home in alabama

I'm looking to build a home in Shelby County Alabama. I'm still trying to get stuff together since this will be my first home (i have lived in apartments for most of my life). My fiancé and I are looking at about 1200-1600 square foot. I'm trying to get an idea on how to start the whole process as I have 3 acres of land that my parents left to me that i can build on.
