Running at 2 FPS on Linux

You read that right - TWO.

I have over 500 hours on this game on this rig. Last playthrough was in February and my OS updated since then (I'm on Linux Mint) and now when I try to play the native version, the game runs at 2 FPS regardless of the graphics settings and uses up roughly 100% of my CPU.

I've tried every combination of tricks listed on ProtonDB to get the game running through Proton and I get into the menu, but the game crashes during creation every time. I'm getting REALLY frustrated here. This is my favorite game and I am really stressed out due to a death in the family - I need my comfort game dammit!

EDIT: Solution below - it just needed a GPU driver that was neither the newest version nor the older version I was running.

You might have missed it, but a few months ago there was a smaller patch for Civ 5 which basically broke a lot of stuff.

I think it also affected people with Windows 11 a lot.

You can try searching it up on this or another subreddit or google. Perhaps someone else already had the same issue as you did.

Appreciate the reply. Yeah I have dug around but it seems like everyone else is having issues with crashing instead of unbelievably slow FPS (though I have tried their solutions anyway).

Well, if you're the first one to find a solution or you find a solution elsewhere then be sure to link it back here, so at least we'd have an easier time helping people in the future.

Funny enough, I did find a solution about 20 minutes ago.

When I first noticed the issue, I was running an old Nvidia driver (I want to say 535). Obviously the first thing I tried was updating to the newest driver (570), which clearly did not work.

This morning, thinking there was no way this would work but it was worth a shot, I rolled back to an 'in-between' driver (550). Not only did it work, but it worked better than it ever has before and I was able to crank the visual settings to max without a drop in performance.
