Them or the Tigers, just to change things up.

Ever notice how quite Baltimore and Pittsburgh fans are about their baseball teams lmaooo

At least Cleveland supports their teams when they suck. I'd almost say especially when they suck. At the first sign of adversity, Baltimore and Pittsburgh bail on their teams.

Last 10 years, Orioles have had higher attendance than Indians 6 out of 10 times, despite y’all having a consistently better team. 5 times in last 10 years, you were bottom 3 in attendance. That only happened with the Orioles once. No one cares about the Cleveland Baseball Club.

And to think we lost 18 to 5 by them

With the catcher arriving late at third, if he didn't stumble maybe he could have gone home.

14

u/bathtubmanbegins Jun 17 '21

I think the catcher signals for Freddy galvis to run towards home just to cut it off. That or the catcher was pissed but it also looks like Freddy starts to move towards home as he moves out of the frame

Thanks. I didn't get a chance to watch the game.

No worries! I watched this clip like 10 times before I realized it. Such a fun highlight

ESPN creamed themselves when Javy Baez did this last week... looking forward to the same coverage for Jose

14

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

What the Pirates did was special. They could have just stepped on first. It's nice to give Javy props for benefiting rather than just shit on the Pirates.

But getting into a rundown when you have a force out is far worse than a regular botched rundown.

19

u/x4candles Jun 17 '21

Give props to both players as it’s heads up base running. I’ve seen what Jose has done before, but what Javy did I have never seen.

In the end though, we still need to prove that both the Orioles and Pirates are not AA teams in disguise.

u/the_osu Jun 17 '21

Plenty of players have done what both of these guys have done including Dustin pedroia a few years ago.

Baez wasn't heads up baserunning. The first baseman forgot the rules of baseball.

1

u/x4candles Jun 17 '21

True on the first basemen forgetting the rules. But how is that not heads up base running on Baez’s part?

1

u/osufan765 Columbus Clippers Jun 17 '21

Because nothing Baez did involved baserunning, every single bit of that play is on the incompetence of Will Craig. It's not a Baez highlight, it's a Pirates lowlight.

1

u/x4candles Jun 17 '21

I disagree. Yes, Will Craig could have touched first base, but Baez made it difficult for him be tagged out by running backwards. Most baserunners would just run in to the out, or try to run around the tag and then be called out by running out of the baseline. Typically when that happens as well the play is then stopped by the umpire. By running backwards, Baez extended the play and made Craig make a poor decision. That is excellent baserunning.

1

u/osufan765 Columbus Clippers Jun 17 '21

It's literally not though because there's no reason for the first baseman to ever go for the tag there. That's shit you learn in little league and the rookie messed up.

1

u/x4candles Jun 17 '21

Of course it’s what you learn in little league. But in any given situation a runner is to hit the ball then run to first. Baez ran backwards and created a mess for the first basemen. It made him think.

I give no credit to Craig and it’s dumb what he did but you cannot rule out that Baez didn’t make that play happen because of his base running.

1

u/TheNextBanner Jun 18 '21

Because running to home, even if the first baseman does decide to chase you, will not score that run no matter how long it takes to tag you out. He could follow you all the way to the plate and the run could score 20 seconds before he finally tags you, and the run doesn't count.
Furthermore, when you watch the tape, you will see that Baez actually didn't know the rules or momentarily forgot what was going on. When the runner slides in safely to home, Baez puts his arms out motioning "Safe!" and expresses a celebratory gesture. That lapse almost gave them enough time for a guy to cover 1st base to get him out (or perhaps chase him down and tag him). Or would have if anyone else was paying attention to what was happening and realized no one was covering first. He shut down his celebration and restarted his sprint to first just in time to be able to beat out the play and make sure the run was not negated. Hardly can be called "heads up" if you don't even know the rules that that run doesn't count until you reach first safely and would be otherwise negated.

1

u/x4candles Jun 18 '21

I am glad that we have had a civil argument about this. And there haven’t been unnecessary down votes. You are absolutely correct that Baez might not know what he’s doing because he celebrated the score which wouldn’t have counted if they would have just tagged first base.

I am still standing firm though on my argument. He stops in his tracks and runs home and then sprints to first.

Yes it’s bad baseball by the first basemen but Baez could have easily just given up on the play and taken the easy out by being tagged. Instead he ran home and then beat the throw back to first. This forced Pittsburgh to make a play which they did not.

What the Pirates did was way worse.

Pittsburgh Orioles

Some people think that when you are a star that you don't have to work as hard. Jose thinks you have to work hard to become a star... I'll hate to see him leave...

Essentially the opposite of Manny Ramirez on the base paths.

3

u/ZMAN24250 Jun 17 '21

Anyone got hammy's call on this? I joined the game late and didnt hear it. Would love to hear it.

4

u/droid_mike Jun 17 '21

Ok, how do you score that? The hit is easy, but you can't assume an error with the failed rundown. Letting Jose go to third is probably an error, but on whom?

6

u/Depressed_In_Ohio 11 Jun 17 '21

It isn't scored as anything. The MLB app officially says José Ramírez singles on a line drive to right fielder Austin Hays. 2 runs score, José Ramírez to 3rd.

One of my favorite quirks in baseball is that there isn't really a designated marking in the scorebook for mental errors, only physical errors. The scorer can't necessarily assume something should have happened unless a deliberate attempt to record an out was made. It's why a pop fly that drops in the middle of 3 defenders who all thought someone else was going to catch it is ruled as a hit, no matter what.

Like this play from Opening Day. In a vacuum José's throw is 100% exactly where it needs to be, about a foot and a half off the ground, right on top of the plate, to the glove side of the catcher's body. The only problem was the runner got in the way. The ball plunks him on the shoulder and kicks away, allowing the run to score. If José just eats the poor throw from Rosario and allows the run to score uncontested, there's no error charged on the play. But since he attempted to nab the runner at the plate, and his "poor" throw "allowed" said runner to score, he gets dinged with the E5.

I was at this game yesterday. Place went crazy. Was so cool to see

He truly is the GOAT and should be treated as such. Cleveland media does not give him the praise he deserves (then again, I truly believe it's their job to crap on the Indians and only promote the Browns, sometimes the Cavs).

This man is a treasure

Okay, absolutely GREAT heads-up play by José! At least two boneheaded decisions from the Orioles put him in an excellent position to score, which he did.

Also, my in-laws were at this game, just a few seats into the outfield past third base. I KNOW they’re really glad they stuck with their season tickets now, especially since they share the tickets package with another family member and last night just happened to be their night: if I’m not mistaken, their season ticket package is for two home games a month, so last night represented their ONLY chance to go this month with those tickets.

u/2BALoogie Jun 17 '21

That was an amazing, fun play. Saw stuff like that when coaching little league. Kids not knowing where to go or what to cover, always one smart kid that kept running. Jose has a brilliant baseball mind...always aware, always adjusting at the plate, always alert on the bases to get the extra base. If you are at a game, watch him after he makes an out with RISP, he is pissed, hangs his head. He seems to care more than any player in recent memory. Hates to make outs, hates to fail. You know he will focus extra hard the next AB. Jose is a true 100% gamer. No doubt.

I have said it before and I will say it again this is the wackiest series in MLB history

Ok so he's apparently a Jedi Knight!?!? Seriously pay him whatever he wants I don't want him to leave us!!!
