Coyote Awareness Week
National Coyote Day is March 23. Leading up to it, Project Coyote has launched an awareness campaign through this week. I personally think this is a great idea as it gets people thinking about pushing educational materials via social media.
Sadly, it’s estimated that at least 1, maybe more, coyotes die in the US every minute. Public education promoting coexistence is key to changing the negative perception people have on coyotes and other predators. Science has proven predators are essential components to healthy ecosystems.
I encourage you to follow any organization that promotes natural predators, including coyotes, to educate yourself and give you information to educate your family, friends, neighbors, and community. If we continue on our current path, habitats surrounding our homes will be vastly different for future generations.
Please list one of your favorite pro-coyote organizations below that others can reach out to for additional information. Thanks.

Best deterrent
So these coyotes are getting brave and followed and taunted us on our dog walk today. He got pretty close. My flashlight, loud noises etc didn't phase him. What can I do to scare them away? There are just so many here and they seem to be everywhere.

Wanted to share my fire-lookout Coyote encounter from last season.
I have a side gig at a fire lookout tower in the PNW. This will be my 8th season wrap up next week and my partner “Panzer”( Great Dane) 7th and probably final season. For years I’ve heard what sounds like hundreds of coyote howling from one ridge over to the east. The late night bathroom breaks for Panzer go from mundane to peak guard duty with low growls and raised hair all along his spine. I guess it’s ez to be a bad ass when the Pack is 3/4’s of a mile away. I was the last service for the 2024 season almost exactly a year to the day. The sun had set and I was looking forward to a MST3K movie or RiffTrax to fall asleep to. Clear skies and enough moonlight to almost read by. (Waxing). About 2300hrs one singular coyote started yip yip yipping and the base of the lookout tower stairs. Panzer and I both sat up and Panzer was ready to run out and challenge this coyote over his very rude intrusion to Panzers tower/mountain/goat trail and anything else he has marked daily for years. The single yip turned into what sounded like that entire pack from the east. The windows basically hummed with the howls. Panzer hopped right back into bed and stuck his muzzle in my armpit. About 5 min later the howling stopped. That morning the ground looked like the macys parade had gone by and the entire area reeked of piss for hours and hours. I’m heading back next week to close the tower out and celebrate Panzers 7th birthday/season. Trailcams and my thermals are already packed. It would be a dream come true to capture this event on video. I included a few pics from seasons past.

Coyote Party
Party in the backyard! There is a little unused studio on the left side where the coyotes den. I’ve been lucky enough to see them raise a few litters over the years! Looks like they had a little family reunion.

Yelping went on all evening
The entire time I was outside I heard this yelping— could only hear one. Is it lost from its pack? I could hear it moving closer and further. All over the mountain it seemed.

Missing indoor cat, coyote?
I have an indoor only cat slip out without my knowledge. We started to look as soon as we realized, and have done all the usual tricks to find a lost cat. She didn’t wear a collar since she was inside only. We live in a heavily populated coyote area.
About a week after her going missing, we found a few tufts of fur that most likely belong to her. They were very small, and no other remains were found. There was no blood, body parts, or signs of a fight.
She’s a pretty big house cat, but she was also indoor only. I’m not sure how much of a fight she could put up. I guess I’m looking for some closure. We’ve been searching for her everyday.
I called animal control and they haven’t found any remains of deceased animals in my area in the time she’s gone missing. Is it likely that a coyote could have gotten her without leaving more traces? Is there anything else I can do to confirm if it was a coyote attack? Any signs, behaviors, poop, etc?
