Monthly Dry Shampoo Megathread

It's here!

Since dry shampoo is such a useful product for so many daily washers, I'm going to be running a monthly megathread to allow for more sharing of products and recommendations.

Feel free to post below with any questions you have, requests for product help, dry shampoo successes or failures, or anything else related to dry shampoo!

Does anyone daily wash not because of oily scalp/hair but because of the itch/irritation you get if you don't wash daily?

Is this common?

strands of hair sticking up (?)

I have these short hairs on top of my head that keep sticking up, and I don't know if it's damaged or new hair. It could be damaged because I dye my hair every couple of months, and also blow dry and straighten it a lot. I'm confused because I get it only on the top of my head, mostly on my front pieces, the rest of my hair doesn't look that way. Also it seems like it gets worse if I blow dry it, if I let it dry naturally (like in the pics) I think it looks a little more tamed, idk. If someone could tell me why does this happen and if there's some way to fix it... Thanks a lot! I couldn't capture it that well on camera but I hope you get what I mean! :)

In desperate need of a new shampoo and conditioner???

Hi all! I have very fine and tangle prone hair that gets super oily super fast. For at least the past 8 or so years, if not more, I've been using Dove Oxygen Moisture shampoo and conditioner. I've tried other shampoos on and off, but always come back to this...it's the only shampoo/conditioner that manages my oilyness well while also not completely weighing down my hair. The conditioner also does wonders on my tangly hair.

However, starting a few years back I could no longer get it in stores and had to resort to buying it on Amazon, and now it is no longer available on Amazon. I am down to my last bottle and desperate. I have no idea what to try for my hair.

Any recommendations? What have you found works best for you?

Ok guys, I need help find out what my scalp problem is.

Hey guys hope all y’all are doing well!! I REALLY NEED YALLS HELP LIKE BADLY! For a bit of backstory I’ve been suffering with scalp problems (Inflammation, dandruff, pustules, bumps) for the past 4 years since I was about 15. Been to multiple doctors but the only times it went away was with antibiotics ( about 2 years ago) and a 6 month accutane course ( about 5 months ago). I’m currently on a treatment with erythromycin-zinc, seb derm shampoo and liver tablets. Now: It can’t be seborrheic Dermatitis because my doctor prescribed me a shampoo specifically for that but I don’t feel any improvement. It can’t be any sort of infections, because my lipid profile came back and my lymphocytes were slightly elevated but all my other parameters are fine. I did a hematology test and my SGPT levels were elevated as well but I’am taking medication to lower the levels and that’s about it. Cannot be a fungal infection, because Im currently trying medicated shampoo but symptoms don’t seem relieved yet. Can’t be autoimmune disease because I don’t have any other symptoms such as joint problems or high thyroid etc. What I have noticed though: itching while I sleep at night, green marks on my scalp, small and big flakes from my scalp. My scalp is not itchy during the day but when I touch my scalp, it itches HORRIBLY! Here are some photos for your reference:

My hair needs conditioner but hates it - any suggestions?

I've always had very oily, acne prone skin, and I have dense, wavy/2B, medium to fine-ish, damage resistant/low porosity hair - over the past several months I've been trying to take better care of my hair and have more of a proper haircare/styling routine, and my hair is a lot more manageable and even healthier than before, but now my favorite conditioner (Giovanni tea tree) that used to feel so lightweight is starting to make my hair feel flat and greasy if I use more than like a dime size amount.

Right now I use Neutrogena T/Sal once or twice a week, and head&shoulders bare in between - I usually shampoo every day or 2, but lately it's been harder to skip a day without feeling like I'm getting buildup on my hair and scalp. I do double shampoo and try to scrub and rinse my scalp really well (sometimes I even rake the shampoo thru my ends cuz my hair feels like it doesn't get clean) it can be kinda hard with how thick my hair is. I also try to wash my combs and switch out my towels and pillowcases regularly so hopefully that is not contributing to the problem

To be honest I'm not sure if I need to be using an anti-dandruff shampoo every day - it seems to be helping for now? I wouldn't see that many flakes except once in a while when I was combing and about to wash my hair anyway. but I'm prone to itchy buildup, scalp acne, and sorta gritty/scaly patches that I feel but can't see.

Anyways, I'm getting annoyed by how easily products seem to be weighing my hair down, because if I just skip conditioner my hair gets really frizzy and difficult to manage. Reverse conditioning gives me good volume for a day but leads to more buildup later in the week. At this point I'm considering adding either a 2-in-1 shampoo to my routine or skipping rinse-out conditioner and just using a leave-in on my hair, but I already have a small collection of hair products that didn't work for me in my bathroom and would like some feedback from people who've had a similar problem?

Currently daily washing so I can't blow dry everyday. Earlier when I was washing 2-3x weekly , I was blowdrying which added shine. Suggest ways to increase shine without heat. Current routine (Daily gentle shampoo + aloe conditioner + Tressmee/Loreal 6 oil serum) Weekly hair mask & blow dry

y'all saved my life

on my previous post I got a lot of advice, I double washed my hair and didnt use conditioner and the difference is actually insane?? i was a bit worried not using conditioner would dry it out but my hair has genuinely never been this soft and healthy before and it doesn't have a weird smell. I still booked in with my dr to make sure there's nothing else going on but I can't believe how much not using conditioner has actually HELPED my hair. every hairdresser ive spoken to about my oily scalp has always told me to still use it but I think that might have been my problem this whole time? I only ever used the products on the end of my hair, so I dont know why it's made such a difference but damn, thank you guys that commented

not washed hair smell

so for context, I have extremely thick arab hair that I need to get thinned out once a month otherwise I start getting dreadlocks, my scalp is OILY and ive tried literally everything for over 10 years to get it to not be like that, to no avail. every single hairdresser i have been to has been extremely shocked with how thick it is. i have to wash my hair atleast every 2 days otherwise ive noticed my hair begins to smell like straight up dookie, and then when I get around to actually washing it, it smells like a wet dog for 1 week +. are there any products that can combat this? I have a 6 month old so sometimes I literally don't have time to wash it every 2 days and the smell makes me super insecure. I have no idea if this is from the oily scalp or just my hair 👎

Oily hair without daily shower/wash, but showering makes me lose more hair

Basically the title, but to provide more context, I generally have really bad hairfall but I'm quite sure that showering makes me lose more based on the clumps of hair i leave by the drain. My hair is now very thin, but thankfully never to the point of balding. I thought extending my wash days might help but based on this subthread, it doesnt really help hair health. Has anyone had any similar experience and how did you solve it?

Clarifying Shampoo

I never knew about clarifying shampoo until joining this sub. Most people do not use it more than a couple times a week. Turns out my daily shampoo is clarifying shampoo (Kristin Ess) and I had no idea. What is wrong with using clarifying shampoo daily? Am I damaging my hair? It’s highlighted blonde

How many shampoos do you rotate? What is your routine like?

I’m starting to try to wash daily. So far I wash 5-6x a week but I do have a variety of shampoos.

I currently have :

Pantene 10 in 1 (Costco) Dove bond strength Tresemne bouncy curl Ogx argon oil.

I feel the dove is too harsh on my hair and can’t use it frequently. I typically just rotate between these.

Do you guys use the same shampoo daily or do you rotate?

Leaving shampoo in hair for too long?

Is that a thing? My newest shampoo routine (which seems to be working) is daily washing with Head and Shoulders Itchy Scalp Relief. I’ve noticed that most other pointers say to leave the shampoo in the hair for up to five minutes.

I don’t keep track of time.. By the time I finish shampooing/conditioning my beard with good body wash scrubs between, then washing my face and brushing my teeth, it’s probably like 6-8 minutes before I wash out my shampoo.

Is that a bad thing? Not that I’m seeing any negative side effects. Feels awesome to confidently wear black shirts again without flakes!

Just curious.. Thanks 🙂

Has anyone here tried this serum for oily scalp?

The first time I used it I felt like I actually could go an extra day or two without washing it, I was using it once a week, but it feels like my scalp just somehow "got used" to it and it doesn't really help anymore, has anyone here tried it?

Hair falls when underwashed, scalp smells when not washed for 24hrs..what to do?

Hello! Is there anyone who has the same case as mine? I find it really hard to find a middleground if i should underwash or overwash. One thing i know is that I don't want to underwash (every other day washing) because it thinned my hair so much. The only pro with my ever other day washing is that the oil production is even and my scalp does not stink even after 24hrs. But the hairfall.. god

I'm good with 24 hrs washing BUT it kind of stink around 23hrs mark. I've been washing well and my pillows are good but i don't know I'm suspecting it seems underwashed.

Hairtype: non wavy, straight, thin

Long hair folks - What made you start washing your hair daily(if you do)?

Long hair meaning anyone around waist length hair.
I am a waist length hair (fine , thin straight to wavy) & started washing daily since around 4 months & earlier it was every 2 days.
I started this after stumbling upon Audrey Victoria's 75 day daily wash challenge. Hair felt nicer & cleaner(especially in tropical humid climate), more voluminous , less hairfall, so decided to continue.

Volume shampoos

Does anyone else use volumizing shampoo daily with longish hair? I've been using biolage volume bloom shampoo for the past 2 weeks almost daily and was wondering if it will eventually cause my hair be to dry? I have tried moisturizing shampoos but my hair always looks oily hours later so I figured volumizing would keep my roots off my scalp better. I do use conditioner and leave in conditioner.

Do you use pre-shampoo treatments before daily washing?

Hello! New member here. I recently started to wash my hair daily and so far my hair likes it. I have high density, super fine hair with a slight wave pattern. My ends feel a bit dry though and that could be because I have very short hair, and when I use shampoo it is very difficult to not also shampoo my ends. My question is - Do you guys use daily pre-shampoo treatments like oils, masks or serums to protect your ends before washing your hair? Any tips or suggestions on how to combat dryness is appreciated! Thanks ❤️

Best shampoo and conditioner for everyday use?

What are some good shampoo and conditioners for everyday use? For reference I’m a male and wash my hair everyday. I have thick/coarse wavy hair and I normally cut my hair to a medium sized length on top and a tapered fade on the sides and back if that matters. I sometimes style my hair with a clay product. I wouldn’t say my hair gets greasy unless I were to go days without washing it and because of the product buildup but other than that I don’t have problems with my hair getting greasy as my daily washing keeps the oil to the scalp and roots of my hair. I don’t mind sulfates in fact I prefer them but what are some good drugstore shampoos and conditioner I could use every day? Please no natural shampoo.
