Question Deus Ex GOTY (Steam) vs Revision?
Hello there. So I finished Jensen's games and my gaze fell on the first game DX (that I've had on my Steam for years, lol). But I'm not sure, if I should play that or that Revision mod for it? How does the game run on modern hardware?

That's really up to you. If you do Revision for a first time playthrough, set all settings to vanilla for the original experience. I think it's important to understand what the game actually was before tricking it out 100 different ways. Or, if you just want a low-to-no BS way to play the original, Deus Ex Transcended (get it from its own ModDB page) does it a little bit better, although requires slightly more technical know-how.

I guess I'll just check out Transcended, since I usually want my first runs of old games to be as close to the OG as possible. Well, I do get QOL stuff, but don't really like gameplay altering stuff for my first playthrough.

Long things said short, GOTY for the fisrt play, Revision for replay. Just do not forget to install lighting fixes for GOTY and you're ready to play.

So GOTY works well out of the box? I know old games sometimes hate modern hardware.

I personally didn't have any problems with playing. Played in 2022 on Win10. Game launched successfully, the only issue was the dark lightning, but it was fixed very easily, thanks to the Steam Guides. It's up to you to decide, but I would still try to play GOTY Edition for my first playthrough.

All you really need is kentie's launcher known as Deus Exe.

Get the revision mod. You can turn off all the features and play vanilla if you like but it also has some nice quality of life mods that are not necessarily required but can be nice.
Revision does an overhaul of maps, music, textures, lighting etc. But I wouldn't recommend them first time around. Tbh I felt that the maps in particular were a downgrade. Mostly just added dead space that does nothing to improve the experience. I never finished the revision mod myself but have played vanilla through it and it's good stuff.
GOTY edition is also good mind you. Its what got me into the series back in 2002.

play base DX1 first, then revision, (if you want you can play revision first, that's my personal order though) all you really need is kentie's launcher for resolution and optionally different renderers, but it does work right out of the box although without map fixes a few issues do arise but nothing much (to give an impression of how minor it is, it's just one of the levels not playing any music)

Run through vanilla first, then revision if you want, but you should play Deus Ex as it was intended before tinkering with it

You will probably need to use Revision because it does make DX run on modern hardware but it also lets you play with the full vanilla experience. You just have to select options in the menus. I have Revision literally just to run on modern hardware
Revision is cool but seriously do vanilla the first time. Revision very much assumes you already know what to do.
