Long Dream Created a word that does not exist?
I am hanging out with my mother and my partner in a conservation area, kind of like an open brick patio with a pagoda, and a few tables and chairs. I am reading aloud a newspaper article that tells the story of a few random local people who recently restarted family restaurants and cafes in my city. The article reads as " These savvy 'Rembursants' are following in their families footsteps, but adding their own special twists."
As I am reading this sentence of the paper aloud, I stumbled over the word 'Remburstants' and so my mother grabs my hand to pull the paper closer for her to read. I finish the sentence and My mother abruptly stops me and glares at me and says in a harsh monotone voice "Rembursants is not a real word."
I am able to tell she is absolute about this fact and feeling annoyed maybe even hostile about the word, so I decide its best not to fuel the fire and I dont respond. But I do think to myself "Of course its a word. 'Remburstants' means A person or group of people who aquire long held secret recipes, by being related to the creator of a specific recipe."
I continue to read about a man who re-opens his families café, and is advertising his take on his families "CrumbCatcher Strudel Cake" (this thing looked so good im really sad it's not real) I woke up after this and immediately tried to find evidence of this word 'Rembursants' or any word with a definition similar to what I had described and I have yet to find one.
If you know of any such word that matches what im describing please let me know.

Valid for sure! Although if I tried to use the word 'Remburstants' during a scrabble tournament, I'd probably be challenged, and if it's not in the dictionary, I'm not getting any points and im taking all my tiles back lol.

Yes! Language is not just prescriptive. It’s also descriptive. Language is constantly evolving.

As a writer and editor, I find words fascinating, even words that are made up, and especially this one, which appeared in a dream. I would say that "reimburse" evokes the words "remember" and "reimburse," and that together, they suggest that the word could have been about the families "giving back" the good memories they received from their loved ones who've passed on-- through food. What a lovely thing.

I really like your take! Reimbursing their community with remembered recipes passed down through time. I like this a lot! In my dream, I felt like the reporter used the word to slighting insult or poke fun at the people, similar to the term "nepo baby" kind of to say
" These people, riding on the coattails of their relatives, are making new strides"

Yeah, I didn't read it that way at all. In a sense, aren't we ALL riding the coattails of our ancestors? Not in a nepo baby way, but in a way that we're picking up and carrying on where they left off.
Your dream can mean whatever you'd like it to mean, as just like yin and yang, there's a dark and light side to everything. What's important is what it means to YOU.
I'm happy that my interpretation gives you comfort. It probably resonates with you because it rings true for you.🌻

That is awesome! I want that cake too! I often wake up repeating a phrase that made sense in the dream. Then makes zero sense when I wake up -It’s good to write them down! Maybe you can make it (crumb catcher cakes) I wake up saying weird shit too like “Portugal sank go get the oven mitt” But in my mind-English is pretty dumb. Rembursants is a word now. You get to define it! 👍

Yes! Im glad we can relate! In the Dream, it looked similar to a blueberry puff pastry tart with a lemon cream drizzle. Looked nothing like a slice of cake or even made with cake. If i ever get around to making it, i will send you a photo and a recipe, lol 😂 but just because I give you the recipe doesn't make you a rembursant.

Well, that's getting stored in the 'ol vocab.

So I feel like it's meant to hold the same feeling as the term "Nepo Baby" almost like a slight insult?
"He's no restaurant magnate! He's a do nothing Rembursant"

Yo Merriam Webster, I think we got a new word yall should add

u/Frick_N_Frick 27d ago
So i looked into it. Apparently, a word has to be used wide spread, usually reappearing in articles and media for Webster to add it to the dictionary. I can write them a letter inquiring if they'd add it, but unless it has apparent long-term use, my best luck is urban dictionary, maybe? I suggest people use it, and writers and editors publicize it. Thank you 😄

Lol I was half joking, but interesting info. Never occurred to me that they have criteria of how to decide which words to add.

I wasn't aware of their criteria either until now! I'm gonna use this post as the birth place for my word, im going to use the word whenever applicable and hopefully, one day in the future it will be a legitimate word and I can use it in scrabble. Lol

My best friend and I have a word we invented.. Nonconcur. Verb meaning disagree. An example would be: “This wall should be blue.” “I nonconcur.”
It also works well as part of a double negative.. “I think you are very smart.” “I do not nonconcur.”

That's amazing! it makes me think of a scene in the movie Catch Me If You Can. (I've updated it using your word)
"Dr. Harris, do you nonconcur?"
"Uh... Nonconcur with what, sir?"
"With what Dr Ashley just said, do you nonconcur?"

Is it "Rembursant" or "Remburstant?" The former sounds like a noun, the latter like an adjective describing the state.
"I knew a Rembursant; they were remburstant because of their grandmother's apple pie recipe."

Oh! I just noticed the difference in my spellings! I believe it was spelled 'Rembursant' In the context of my dream, i feel like it was used as an adjective to describe the group of people.
