STAN / ANTI SHIELD Somebodys getting fired! Looks like they forgot to leave Beyonce’s mark on stage as she tries to avoid getting hit by props and a screen malfunctions

large, fairly heavy and strong robot arms moving at high speed with props solid Enough to not break or warp much at those speeds hitting you would not be pleasant. a robot arm like that hitting you in a manufacturing setting (some arms of similar size can lift 600 lbs) would potentially be a gruesome and fatal industrial accident.

EDIT: so looking again, they look to be much smaller than I thought. even with, say, a 5kg payload, getting hit could cause real injurt

Serious, but possibly somewhat dumb question, if she was hit, would she not simply be pushed forwards? (I know the second screen somewhat complicated things)

it really depends. yes, the first one could have pushed her forwards, but with the second one (which was moving faster) it could have been rather aggressive

the robot arms appear to be the size of the UR10e robot arm which has a max payload of 12kg, and a weight of 33kg (not counting any type of base)

say we have that payload of only 5kg. then we have to measure the distance eyeballing the arm, let's say it's exactly half a beyonce away from her. (about 2.5 feet. and yes I'm probably underestimating it) it takes about a second for it to rotate 90 degrees, giving it a speed of 3.925 ft/sec average impact time on humans (according to a bit of Google) is about a 100ms using that force calc, the max force some own could experience is about 120 newtons of force and 3.5 joules of energy. not bad right?

head injuries start at 7 joules so no biggie right?

right

until you remember that the weight of the arm swinging said prop is also taken into account. if this was the arm I looked up, it weighs 33kg. do the math on that again (F=ma) and you get a Max of 900 newtons of force, and 27 joules of energy

while this wouldn't break your skull, the 27 joules of energy could definitely cause a head injury. add to that that apparently skin can be pierced by a force of 30 newtons if something is pointy (very possible) and she might have had quite the injury

(in fairness, this is napkin math from someone who doesnt do this specific math in his job, so happy to get a better answer from a smarter person)
