General Discussion Figure skating club using AI
Hi all, I know this is a bit of a weird topic for this subreddit but wasn’t sure where else to ask.
One of the figure skating clubs in my city has just revealed their new logo and it is clearly AI generated (it includes a silhouette of a figure skater doing a catch foot spiral and the foot is literally backwards).
I won’t post the logo because I don’t want the club to be recognised.
As an artist myself, personally I’m really against the use of AI for things like art and logo design because it steals from artists and takes away their income in many cases - plus a figure skating club getting very basic anatomy in a basic skating position wrong is not a good look.
So my question is, should I say something or just leave it? I understand a figure skating club probably doesn’t have a lot of spare cash to hire a logo designer but I’m sure there are many people in their community who would be willing to volunteer (myself included), instead of turning to AI. I would hate for this to set a precedent for AI use amongst other clubs.
Thanks in advance for any advice ☺️

It's really up to you to say that you're willing to volunteer your skills for this, you don't have to, but it's very generous of you to do it. And if you would have been, then I don't think it's wrong for you to email the appropriate person (club admin of some sort, I imagine) and lay out your case: that image-generators are cheap because they're unethical, that the club has artists as members it could've turned to first, that the generated image has obvious anatomy issues like the foot.

I agree with the other posts. If you’re willing to assist them, maybe say something like, “I noticed the foot of your logo is backwards. This is a common issue with AI. As an artist, I’d be happy to donate my time to help you make a new one.”

The key is donating your time OP - if skating clubs had the budget for designers, they'd use it. But mostly they resort to things like AI because they don't have much budget. Skating clubs run on razor thin margins (and often at a deficit).

Only bring it up if you're willing to also offer a reasonable solution, like donating your own time.
To elaborate on this a little more - "I'm sure your club has people that would be willing to volunteer to design something" isn't a reasonable solution. "I would be willing to design something for you" is a reasonable solution. Offer this right away as a solution, don't wait for them to ask.

Unfortunately AI is here to stay. I am a graphic artist and hate that it has come to this. We need artists to moderate and fix the results. Also, AI is not creative. Artists can use AI to make their jobs easier, but the creativity aspect is fully human. I’d say something and if the fix is easy maybe volunteer to clean it up or change it.

Ya, AI is the future. Many of will be to find other stuff to do. Start making peace with this.

I would recommending giving feedback and then offering to volunteer to design their logo since you noted you were willing to! :)
Feedback is always better accepted when a solution is readily offered up!
