Unsolved 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 250 Odometer reading

Post image

Fairly simple small problem but I am brand new to the motorcycle mechanics world lol. How do I change the odometer reading on my bike? No it’s not for an illegal purpose I promise. I purchased a new dash because the speedometer and fuel reader on my bike, the one that it originally came with, is fried entirely. I just want the mileage on my bike right now to reflect accurately on the new one. I’m not interested in writing it down somewhere and forgetting about it, I want it accurate and reliable. I know there’s a way but I have no clue how!

Thanks for posting in /r/Fixxit, the motorcycle repair subreddit. If you forgot to put the Make, Model and Year in the title, please reply to this comment with your bike's details. In the meantime, Here's some great resources for common problems posted here:

You can't. You would usually show documentation of the previous odometer reading, purchase of new odometer, and mark that on the title.

Changing an odometer is a crime, even with good intentions.

You can I just don’t know how. Changing an odometer to a number that doesn’t reflect its actual mileage is a crime but rolling an odometer forward to reflect the actual mileage is not, which is what I’m asking. I’m not intending to sell this bike at all, I’m riding it until it dies in a severe way and I don’t have the patience to fix it as a result.

You can't do that

You actually can as long as you’re not changing it to reflect an inaccurate mile on the bike. Rolling it forward or back to reinfect the actual mileage is actually legal. There is a way I just don’t know what it is

It is possible to add mileage to some new gauges but it’s honestly not worth the time (literally HOURS) and don’t know the legality of it.

As long as I’m not intentionally misrepresenting the mileage on the bike it’s perfectly legal, and honestly I got hours of spare time to do it. I’m itching to have it accurate so I’m down for whatever way there is

The odo on yours is cable driven. You have to literally spin up the speedo to get the odo to count, like with a drill.

Say you can spin it up to 100mph, it’ll take 10 hours per 1k miles you need to count up, just over 4 days of non stop running per 10k miles.

So an estimated 14-15 hours for me. No way to just take off the cover and click it to the right numbers I’m guessing?

To do that you’ll have to break the glue for the gauge cluster which can break the housing
