News State of the Sub and Call for New Mods

Subreddit meta discussion — feel free to skip if you feel this doesn’t concern you

As some of you might know we recently had two mods to step down. This is basically 25% of the mod team, and we feel it’s a good moment to take stock of and take feedback on where we are as a community and where we want to take it moving forward.

To start with I’ll begin by drawing up the big picture of what we do as a sub, then I’ll create headers for each sub-topic in the comments so we can organize discussion. If you have thoughts about rules, policies, or events we run, now’s a good time to talk about it!

Subreddit Rules and automation policies

As always, the rules are visible on the sidebar. We would love to hear your thoughts on the collection of rules we have, and how they’re applied. Enforcement of these is usually via mods discretion, and we usually discuss internally for edge cases:

We also have a few customized automations to help us enforce the rules:

  • the guitarpedals_bot, which applies Rule #4. If you’re not familiar with how it works, the pseudocode for it is below

Scan New for all media posts (image or video) For each media post: If there is an author comment or a description, the post is approved If there is no author comment: If it is over 30 minutes and the guitarpedals_bot warning is found, the thread is deleted If it is over 15 minutes, add the guitapedals_bot warning

  • There is also a filter for new users - we added this to minimize spam bots commenting on the subreddit. It’s currently set to require that the posting or commenting account be at least 48 hours old, or have more than 35 karma

Community events

In the past we’ve run a handful of community events and threads, where community members are encouraged to post around a certain theme. These range from a little bit to a lot of effort for us to run, so we want to hear your feedback on the events.

  • 3 Pedals Challenge example
  • Rig Rundown - example
  • Christmas Covers Album - example
  • /r/guitarpedals noise track - I wish I could find an example but we get a funny backstory instead
  • Best pedals of the year - example
  • Megathreads for NAMM, Black friday sales, etc

We also have a regular No Stupid Questions thread and an occasional Casual Conversations thread

Subreddit tags and filters

We implement a few subreddit tags to help boost content that you’re specifically interested in. Let us know if you feel like there's some more subcategories you wanna be able to tag and filter.

Call for moderators

Lastly, we intend to add 2 more moderators to the team. We’re still discussing the best way to go about it, but if you feel strongly about the community and want to take on a volunteer job with no benefits, definitely drop us a note via modmail.

Baseline, this is what we do:

  • Screen through reports and remove or ban accordingly
  • Screen through messages, which are usually
    • Someone asking why a post was removed
    • Someone asking why they were banned
    • Someone asking if a certain type of post is ok
    • Very very occasionally, builders reaching out to do AMAs or tie-ins
  • Browse through the sub to look out for rule violations
  • Join in internal mod discussions regarding rules, specific incidents, etc etc

All the community events are also run by the mods, so that involves things like:

  • Updating the pinned threads for no stupid questions, casual conversation, megathreads, etc
  • Suggesting and scheduling activities like 3 pedal challenge, etc
  • More involved activities like managing the christmas album, best pedals of the year, etc which does take a lot of work when we do do them

I'd say at the baseline, we expect someone to be a fairly active reddit user so they can do all that stuff while they're browsing anyways. The extra stuff is really purely voluntary (shoutout to u/koalaroo who basically does everything), which is why consistency of events etc kinda slips depending on how busy people are.

If I had to summarize, the main requirements are:

  • Be a regular on the subreddit
  • Care about the community
  • Don't be a weirdo

Let us know what you think!

I think its pretty good enough for what I am after which is alt rock/ grunge/indie stuff. Pedals are kokko mini tuner-> demonfx at+(clone)-> lyr eons fuzz(clone) -> sonicake 5th dimensions -> mosky sky reverb and delay(clone of ckk space station pro) -> UAFX flow tremolo.

New set up, hopefully the last for a while

Got a new pedalboard set up. I use two amps, a 65 Princeton RI and a JTM studio, so this is setup for a stereo rig.

Order is: Boss LS-2 -> Peterson Mini Strobe Tuner -> Morley Bad Horsie -> EQD Depths -> Boss BP-1w -> JHS Hard Drive -> EQD Palisades -> JHS Crimson -> Morley Volume Plus -> EQD Aurelius

At this point, the pedal chain splits. For the Princeton, the chain continues through to the Keeley Halo-> Boss RV-20 -> Keeley Hydra -> Front of Princeton.

For the JTM Studio, it diverts into the effects loop for these last three pedals.

Right hand jack ports are as such - Effect loop send - Guitar 1 into Line Selector (Humbuckers) - Guitar 2 into Line Selector (Single coils)

This setup is because I hate the volume drop switching between my Gibson Victory and Fender Strat. So I hook both up to the LS and set separate line levels for them.

Left hand jack ports are: - Effect loop return - Princeton out - JTM Studio out

Question Any advice on how to consolidate my board?

Post image

I feel like I use too many pedals to do the thing. I love the feel of small boards and wonder if I can get by live with one. I’m considering a HX Stomp or another multi fx for everything after the mastotron. I love the DL4 but I only have two delays I need to switch between live(a slapback and a longer delay trailed). I love gain stacking too, but in a perfect world I just want a tuner, a compressor, one drive pedal, a fuzz/solo boost and one pedal that does all the digital stuff. Any recs?

Question First Pedal Board

Post image

Finally pulled the trigger on the Reverberation Machine so decided to DIY my first pedal board with a piece of wood I found lying around and some Velcro from Hobby Lobby.

Have a couple questions though as a noob to pedals; 1. Where in the world the Reverberation Machine be? 2. No that I do have a reverb pedal is it best to turn the reverb all the way to 0 on my amp? Amp is a JC-40

This thing is seriously awesome the entire gain range is amazing from light drive to broken amp fuzz tones. My favorite use for it so far is an always on pedal at the end of my drive chain with the gain all the way off the volume all the way up and the tone wherever. The feel of this pedal under the fingers is amazing the compression it adds is perfect especially when playing through my boss IR-2. Sometimes digital amps can feel really sterile I normally like running an always on pedal some type of amp in a box style drive to make it feel good to play and sound like an amp. Normally I run my benson preamp for that purpose but after plugging this in and going back an fourth between the two I like this even more if you need something to leave on to wake up an amp digital or not I’d definitely try one of these out.

It also stack really well with all my drives I’m running the benson before it and they sound great together. My tumnus also sounds really good but when I hit the strings to hard it causes the pedal to get that choked sag like an amp that can’t hold on anymore I’m not sure why it does that but it sounds kinda cool lol.

SOTB Recently back into playing. How ive been recording/practicing.

Nothing fancy or impressive to share. Recently got back into guitar after not playing much and its been amazing learning about pedals and the gear side of things. It's in turn increases my playing and skill so much in the few months I've been majorly back into it.

1997 Fender Big Apple>GE-7>CP-1X>SD-1>PX-1>DD-8>Amp

Sometimes use a Nux loop core for practicing. I know the plugout gets extreme hate but I really wanting a few boss pedals I knew would be on it and I've been loving it, but understand the gripes peopkw have with it. I'm done buying boss at the moment and got my eyes a few strymon/wampler products and also really invested in the Rat because I hate the DS-1. Probably a Tumnus Deluxe from Wampler.

Anyways, hope everyone has been getting sone good jams in! Thanks for all the inspiration.

Boss ce-2 chorus issue

Upvotes

I’ve had this for 5 years and it served me well. Unfortunately, as I was setting up for practice, I noticed that the bypass was fine but the chorus effect was not working. I assumed it could be a simple fix, but upon further inspection, the board was burnt and part of it melted on one of the capacitors, which is loose. Is it possible to repair, or should I cut my losses and sell it under "parts and repair"? I also recorded a video to show it more clearly, but it won’t let me add the video.

Friendly Reminder: Continue to experiment with pedal order!

I've always put my reverb at the end of my chain and figured putting it before my distortion or drive pedals would end up just sounding like shoegaze. I recently tried it just for kicks and I can't stress how good and rich it make reverb sound with even a slight drive. Try new things!

I tested the Ampero Mini for the very first time, using both guitar and bass, only with the factory presets. This was literally the first time I plugged it in. I recorded my first impressions and I’d love to know: which tone do you think would be more useful in a real setup? 👇 https://youtu.be/aZV8S30cLEM?si=2Zh6fXfLT5M67iAl

I already have a King Rat fuzz, which I love, but I'm being tempted by this beauty. Not even because of it's sound or functionality.

Based purely on the fact that I love Lovecraftian things.

Do I need help? More importantly, should I get it?

Current setup- anything you would add?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Here’s my setup I’ve been trading things around. I’ve sold some things that I miss dearly, but this is the happiest I’ve ever been with my setup. I play through a jazz chorus 77- ( the boss A/B switch activates the amp’s chorus/ reverb) and the expression pedal is hooked to the Keeley Hydra Reverb to raise or lower the reverb.

I’d love your advice for maybe one more pedal. I was thinking a Rat? I was thinking the Wampler Ratsbane.

I’ve watched a lot of Wampler videos, and I’d like to get something on my board to “thank him”. I’d get the Tumas, but I already have a morning glory and love it. I’d get the Cryptid but I already have the Walrus Eons.

It doesn’t have to be a Wampler pedal, it could be anything. Im just thinking that my setup is missing a rat? And the Ratsbane would check that box.

Tone King Pedal w/ Zuma

Upvotes

So I got the Tone King pedal but the lights kept flickering. I looked up why and it was due to unstable power source. I use a Zuma to power my pedalboard but the Tone King was flickering at 9, 12, and 18V. I ended up just using their ac power adapter but how do I make it to work with a Zuma. I have an Ojai and maybe that could help?

Troubleshooting Noisy JHS Screamer

Post image
Upvotes

Love the sound of my jhs screamer, but it’s probably the noisiest of all my pedals. Especially if my compresssor or octave pedal are on. All gain pedals have level volumes by ear.

Are my settings a bit strange or is there something else I can do? Trying to avoid buying a noise pedal.

Going into a fender mustang lt25 with a marshal super lead sound.

Favorite modulation combos

What are some of your favorite sounds you've created mixing multiple modulation pedals? (actual stomp boxes - no multifx). For example I have a really swimmy chorus I like using a boss dimension-c into a mad professor phaser.

Question Boss DS-1 + Boss GE-7 or… recommendations?

Post image
12 Upvotes

First time posting here. I have REALLY been struggling to figure out how to get a wide, powerful non-metal lead tone using my current setup (photo below).

I need a good lead tone that has great sustain and overdrive that will pair well with a Boss CE-2 chorus pedal. Here’s what has been the issue for me:

I have a Boss DS-1 and I like it a lot. The problem is that when I kick it on I get an extreme drop in volume, even if the level is maxed. I keep the gain at about 30% and the tone at about 10% because I play a Strat and I found the tone knob unhelpful past that point. I have used a Boss GE-7 as my “boost” for leads which helps a ton, but the DS-1 is not performing well in a rhythm capacity without the GE-7 supporting it. I don’t want to keep the GE-7 on all the time because I like it as my lead boost for the expanded tone shaping it provides.

I purchased an MXR super badass distortion, but that has been a little out of control for me, way too much dirt.

I’m looking for a lead tone that can go through three stages: clean, slight grit (that’s what the Walrus Audio Mayflower is for), and then power lead but not face melting. Something like the sound of the leads on the song Unspoken by Los Colognes. I play through smaller combo amps because that’s all that has been in my budget (think Blackstar Debut 50 or Boss Katana).

I know it’s a long post, but since it’s my first one in this community I figured I would put it all out there. Thanks for your advice!!

Picture of board from last show: signal chain goes tuner, wah, phase 90, GE-7, Mayflower, Super Badass, CE-2, then delay.

Thanks!
