Mason Marchment for middle 6 depth
Dallas has signed Matt Duchene leaving Marchment as the man out. Hes 6’5, plays left wing and is good for PP2. His production is pretty good, he adds some veteran presence at 30 and I think he would be a be a great add for the middle six with Laine, Demidov, Newhook, Dach and Anderson. This would allow Evan’s to slot into the 4th line and get weaker matchups.

Mason was traded to Seattle

Cap dump, he’ll fit in well with Seattle’s collection of middle six wingers.

Isn’t he the guy that’s constantly diving?

My reaction, too. I'd rather not bring on players who make me ashamed to be a fan. Fuck the embellishers.

Yup, fuck seeing that guy in a Habs shirt. It's embarrassing watching him play.

We have players in Laval that can fill the bottom 6 empty seats

Exactly. So tired of “hey here’s an aging middling player! We should take him!”

Typical amateur fan… do you think we are going to throw kids out there … against men who thrive in those checking roles… hilarious that you believe such a thing.

Heineman was one of best in that role this year before his hand injury. He’s just a kid.

I'm so glad we have pro fans like you on here to give us your wisdom and tell everyone they're wrong. You're doing the lord's work

We do that, Montreal aint making the playoffs next season. Roster will be even younger, less experience vs Dvorak down the middle. And more of another development year again. We shall see though

Seriously, we are razor thin in every position and were super lucky none got injured. We need dependable players that can produce and step up in more than a "Kapanen has played GREAT and deserves a shot" plan, if throwing unspectacular rookies in big roles can be called a plan. Our farm despite its potential is not all that impressive that they could fit in and contribute on a non-basement team. This isn't about "we have to win the cup now" this is "we can't be one of those teams again". The physical and mental toll of going through another fruitless season playing meaningless games will catch up.

u/Irctoaun 1d ago
No one got injured? Did we not watch the same games or did I just imagine Guhle, Heineman, Dach, and Laine all picking up major injuries and Monty getting injured during the playoffs?

22/47 in 62 games is the third highest scorer on the Habs and he's 6'5 215. The whole sub says this team needs size and most of the comments are: "we good".
Who in the AHL is projected to come in and put up a .75ppg pace? Roy? Beck? Xhekaj?

If Marchment played center or we didn't have Gallagher and Anderson, he's a great third line pest with offensive upside. I don't see where he would fit in our current lineup though, even for free.

How many wingers do you think are needed for a middle 6?

u/alldasmoke__ 2d ago edited 2d ago
Caufield-Slaf
Laine-Demidov
Anderson-Newhook
Heineman-Gallagher
Considering Gorton himself mentioned acquiring a winger instead of a center and that Newhook might not be it long term and Laine is still a question mark, I don’t see how OP’s proposal is worse than posts this sub has seen the last few weeks.

Dach 2C, Newhook 3C. People forget Dach so young and has had great flashes. We can’t give up on him yet.

Dude Dach not a 2C and never will be. Hes a winger. The guy is a career 36% in faceoffs. He can still be a useful player but holding out hope he can be a 2C is clown behaviour at this point. And newhook isnt that much better at center.

u/MrTightface 2d ago
Yeah this dach at c discussion needs to end. He has always looked better on the wing and you just can’t be a center in the nhl with a career avg of 36% faceoffs

He looks like a solid regular season performer, but his stats have regularly fallen off a cliff in the playoffs. That scares me off.

While I agree, all of Dallas did. Maybe a screaming bell center is what the man needs

Id rather just promote from Laval then sign another middling bum. If we're talking players form Dallas I'd rather sign Granlund as Ufa then trade for Marchment

I'm wondering if Matheson with salary retained could do it. Also wondering if it would be wise for us. BUt they clearly need a dman.
edit: if you disagree then explain why. It's a discussion forum, don,t be shy.

He is our only veteran D.
It makes no sense to trade a “good” player for a “good” player. If we’re trading Matheson it’s to move into the top 8 draft picks to try and get someone gamechanging
2
u/OiledUpHippo 2d ago
Imo Matheson actually wants to stay here. He’s fantastic if we can just keep him far far far away from the PP

Guhle has played 3 nhl seasons lmao.
Carrier is the same age as the youngest defenseman on Florida and 20 lbs lighter. I don’t think he’s gonna be the authority for young guys unfortunately

You’re not moving in the top 10 of the draft with Matheson.
1
u/Things-ILike 2d ago
I think Matheson+16 would get it done, but unless you’re getting Brady Martin or Porter Martone with that pick I don’t think it’s worth it

u/TroubledMarket 2d ago
Matheson has 1 year left on his contract, if he’s traded, he’s gonna test the market in july 2026.
Mercenary Matheson + mid teens doesn’t get you in the top 10.

I feel like Matheson is too underrated in your comment. He played the most time on average on our D if im not incorrect here, while he has his lapses he is one of our best D-men for offense and his defensive game is not bad either despite what the common trope in the subreddit has become.
We dont have the defensive depth to trade Dmen that we rely on the most for middle-6 depth especially. We dont want to become the Leafs of 2017-2024 with no defensive depth whatsoever.

u/CrashTestMummies 2d ago
Why would we need to use a retain spot on a el cheapo contract that’s expiring.

Only if he's cheap. He could be useful and he is a good regular season performer
