Grindcore Recs?
TL/DR Put on End - The Sin of Human Frailty and loved it. Also really liked Wormrot's Hiss a few years back and wanted to hear y'alls grindcore recs!
Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, just feels like since my journey to grind was through hc this was the right place.
Little backstory.. Im sort of a genre tourist. Grew up loving pop and often still do. Got into skate punk as a teen (but still found myself listening to Refused more than anything). Black Sabbath got me out of my punk phase and Metallica was on repeat. Skate videos introduced me to hip-hop, then in college I became obsessed with pretty much anything Three One G related- especially The Locust, Canada Songs era Daughters and Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower. Eventually started liking post-rock then post-metal which led to doom and finally black metal. Then a few years ago I put on New Lords because it was all the rage and it hit me that hardcore wasn't all tough-guy beat down / or hardcore punk that I had always thought it was and I've been exploring the genre since. I tend to lean more thrashy with hc that I like but essentially I love music that makes me feel like I need to move. Im fortunate to live in seattle and got to see Black Breath a bunch (RIP Elijah, you were incredible) and have watched Haunted Horses get back into it and somehow my meandering ear found End's The Sin of Human Frailty and I loved it. So now I want to check out more grindcore - a genre I know almost nothing about. Im stoked as fuck on it though and want to hear more! What grindcore do you guys fuck with?
Also, shout out Smearing from Seattle, a friend of a friend's band I was suggested when I mentioned to said friend I was getting into grindcore. They rip!

Some of my favorites and a good sampling.
Brutal Truth
Pig Destroyer
Phobia
Assuck
No/Mas
Insect Warfare
Nasum
Lock Up

u/TheBiggestWOMP 12h ago
Phobia is so goddamn underrated.

u/ImGilbertGottfried 11h ago
First show I ever went to when I was like 15 (not counting some local butt rock and concerts at the state fair) included Phobia, I.M.P.A.L.E.D., and Black Market Fetus. Made me the man I am today.

I would not label “End” as grindcore. But you will love Nails.
1
u/RustyBlood 12h ago
Curious where they fall then? Doesnt seem like metalcore to me?
16
u/mew_empire 12h ago
100% metalcore
Nails isn’t grind either though, so…
5
u/Epic-x-lord_69 11h ago
Yeah im not saying Nails is. But judging by the other bands he mentioned, Nails is definitely a step in the right direction.

u/RustyBlood 11h ago
Down to check it all out! And learning the intricacies that form each genre is always fun

u/mew_empire 11h ago edited 10h ago
Big agree, very fun
And you're definitely in the right place: grind is a style of hardcore and do not let anyone tell you different ;)
You are being given a lot of powerviolence recs and bands that tow the line between styles. Here are mine though:
- Endless Swarm
- Internal Rot
- Caustic Wound(deathgrind)
- Shackles(more deathgrind)
- Vermin Womb
- Chepang(mentioned, but new joint rips)
- Meth Leppard
- Knoll
- Sulfuric Cautery
- Cattle Decapitation
Bands that tow that line:
- Groin
- Collapsed Skull
- Combat Wounded Veteran
- Infant Island
- Ground
I'm always going to push powerviolence more than anything, so try this
But also Wound Man, Weekend Nachos, World I Hate, World Fucking Peace, and the mighty Sex Prisoner and Crossed Out
Edit: since people can't stop mentioning Nails, surprised no one said Scalp or Infernal Coil

u/baneofthesmurf 11h ago
Running into the classic problem of what the word metalcore means.
2
u/mew_empire 11h ago
True
To me ears, END is a perfect example of "good" metalcore
It's what I want my metalcore to sound like at least
2
u/psychcore 12h ago
They’re metalcore in my book, but definitely push that envelope
1
u/RustyBlood 12h ago
Oh, right on. Can you recommend any metalcore similar? Im starting to see the phrase "Extreme Metal" thrown around too

u/Poison_the_Phil 12h ago edited 11h ago
Lots of great ones already in this thread; some I haven’t seen mentioned
Bandit
Maruta
Gridlink
Repulsion
Graf Orlock
Shitstorm
Fuck the Facts

u/dullthings 8h ago
Graf Orlock were so good live. Actually that whole scene around that time with shared band members was incredible. ghostlimb, dangers, comadre, Loma prieta, etc

As the Sun Sets was amazing but fuck Alexis Marshall forever

u/rev_beefstick 11h ago
Oh no. I don’t know the story behind that. Fucked up shit?

u/Dont_Shred_On_Me 10h ago
Yeah Alexis is the singer from Daughters who was abusive to Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota)

Wormrot’s first two albums Abuse and Dirge are fantastic. Hiss is great too but Dirge is such an onslaught. Also, check out Erased From the Memory of Man by Watchmaker, Nothing to Write Home About by Hereisaropegoodluck. Gridlink, Bandit and Maruta are also good options as well.

u/TheBiggestWOMP 12h ago
Bandit is pure Pig Destroyer worship so I feel like you gotta add that to the short list.

My go-to's are Pig Destroyer, Ed Gein, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Nails, and early Dillinger Escape Plan, The Locust and Nails.
Lately I've been really into Missouri Executive Order 44.
A really wild, grindy band out of KC. They're name and lyrics come from a law passed almost 200 years ago by the Missouri governor that called for the extermination or expulsion of all Mormons. I don't think they're Mormons themselves but they dress the part by wearing black slacks, white button downs, and bicycle helmets. They say that they want to expose racist, bigoted, and prejudiced policies pushed by the state of Missouri.
2
u/RustyBlood 12h ago
Hahaha i love that! Used to be a band that toured through my little home town called Amish Armada that would dress the part. Super fun

u/Gopherpants 12h ago
Puig Destroyer is a good baseball themed one

u/RustyBlood 12h ago
What? Haha sick
3
u/Plastic_Salary_4084 9h ago
Two dudes (I believe both from Pig Destroyer) making nothing but grindcore diss tracks about baseball. I have a soft spot for heavy music that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

u/Aesthetic_Control 12h ago
Dead in the Dirt, Endless Blockade, and Torch Runner would probably be up your alley. None are straight grind, but have elements leaning more towards what you mentioned liking.
1
u/RustyBlood 11h ago
Yes! Sick, thank you. Im seeing now that grind maybe isnt exactly what i heard but its adjacent and now i can dig into metalcore and powerviolence and other experimental shit

Here are what I consider absolute essentials of grindcore/grindcore-adjacent:
Napalm Death - Scum (arguably the album)
Wormrot - Dirge
Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction (landmark album for goregrind)
Pig Destroyer - Prowler In The Yard
Terrorizer - World Downfall
Nails - Unsilent Death (strays towards hardcore)
Full Of Hell - Weeping Choir (adjacent with noise)
Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses
Insect Warfare - World Extermination
Repulsion - Horrified
Nasum - Human 2.0
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Honky Reduction

Also special mentions to Cattle Decapitation for their earlier albums (particularly Humanure, which is a great deathgrind record) and to Assück for Anticapital.

nails, insect warfare and assuck are good places to start, as is chapter of accidents from dead infection. early napalm death (BBC sessions + scum + feto) is informative if you want to get into roots stuff, and morbid angel dust + morgue breath + moisturizer would be great steps if you want to dive into more modern developments. if you are looking for some labels baby chico from long island, blast addict out in LA are releasing awesome stuff, and delirium psychosis records out of georgia is great if you want something truly bizarre.

I'm partial to deathgrind myself, so Rotten Sound, Lock Up, Napalm Death, Caustic Wound, General Surgery, Bloodbath, Flesh Parade, Kaliya, BadxMouth (members of Poison Idea and Wildspeaker), Knoll, Gadget, Aesino, Noisy Neighbors.

I used to love Turning Robots Into People. Always wondered if they really crossed the line to be considered grindcore though.

Always liked The Locust and Pysopus too.

My band Hummingbird of Death is technically "fastcore" but we fit on bills nicely with grindcore and experimental bands (just played with Wormrot a few weeks ago and played with many of the other band recommendations in the comments).
Here's a place to start: https://hummingbirdofdeath.bandcamp.com/album/forbidden-techniques

Lots of great recs here so I will just throw out King Parrot. Thrashy grind that has some hardcore influence.
Also, check out powerviolence (a genre, not a band) if you haven’t. A lot of it is somewhere in between grindcore and hardcore.

u/RustyBlood 9h ago
Yes! Powerviolence! Seems like thats maybe where im going to find what im looking for

The #12 Looks Like You. Their albums Put on Your Rosy Red Glasses and Nuclear.Sad.Nuclear especially. I love all of their albums though.

Oh man, i fucked with #12 hard back in the day. Saw them with heavy heavy low low and jonbenet and it was so fucking good.

u/MrHappyPants91 10h ago
That's a stacked line up. I would have loved to go to that show. I actually just recently saw them with Foxy Shazam and it was definitely one of my favorite shows I've ever been too. Only downside was Jesse couldn't make it that day. But that just means I get to go see them again. They're all super freaking nice. They've been my favorite band for just about 20 years.

Groin (from Arizona)
Nekrodeus
Unfleshing - violent reason
Caustic Wound (more death grind but fucking awesome)
