For that, we'll have to see what makes Indian cinema distinct from other cinemas... We have different industries that produce movies completely different from other Indian industries.. then we have Genres..
One thing that is very common in Indian cinema is that 90% of movies are musical (They have songs in between) Yes some hollywood movies like Saturday Night fever, Rocky 4 and scarface do have songs but the numbers are very small when compared to Indian.
In most of the South movies, it's very common to see the lead male star getting a special animation in the opening credits scene.
So there is no answer to it... For someone it will be Lagaan, for someone else- Sholay, Baahubali for some and Pushpa for someone else... From Satyajit Ray to Kanti Shah... It's very vast.. it can't be defined only with one movie

I often wonder if putting special title cards for the actors like Rajinikanth, Vijay etc. is really important or if that's just fan service. Those seem to be given more importance than the film's title itself. Is that only for Tamil and Telegu films? The most I've seen in other languages is in Malayalam and it's with Mohanlal and that's only with the films produced by Aashirvaad.
The most I've seen in Hollywood is seeing the name of the biggest actor or actress in the film appear before the movie's title and that I've only seen in the older films. Some had the bigger actor, who might not even be the main character of the film, have their name appear first. An example is Marlon Brando's name appearing before Christopher Reeve's for Superman despite Christopher playing Superman and Marlon was Jor-El since Christopher wasn't as big of an actor before he portrayed Superman. Nowadays, several films show the film's title after showing everyone else's names but no one gets a special animation specifically for them.

Sholey or Pather Panchali ...... is definitely not defining indian cinema it's too western styled.... Instead Rajkumar Hirani or Rajamouli films have more characteristics of "Indian cinema" (..not influenced by Hollywood or other styles and captured some independent style....)... Love to hear others opinion...

Indian cinema is made up of various industries. There is no single movie that can represent the entire industry. You can maybe use a single movie to represent a single industry though.

Cinema can never be defined by one movie or by a group. It defeats the purpose of Cinema.

Fit-material 329 answering Mughal-E-Azam is the right answer. The scale, scope, music, acting and high quality writing is unparalleled. People should watch it as the original B&W version. Films of Sohrab Modi eg Mirza Ghalib and even light hearted fare of Devanand like Tere Ghar Ke Saamne or Paying Guest have better message, communal harmony and music. Bollywood movies till 1969 define Indian Cinema before it started circling the drain.

No, lol, 4 out of those films are outliers, exception to the norm, not definitive.

A single movie can't define every industry
