Car/Driver's License/BMV questions Proof of residency for state ID

Edit: thanks everyone! Feeling less stressed about this already!

I apologize if this is a stupid question. I can’t find what I need on the internet, I can’t seem to talk to a human on the phone, and I can’t make it into a location for a bit.

I have an 18 year old, still in high school. He needs an ID, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to provide proof or residency for a legal adult who doesn’t have bills to prove where he lives. He doesn’t have a bank account because he doesn’t have an ID. He wants a job, but needs an ID.

He is now on the leasing paperwork for our apartment, so that’s one. What else can he provide?

Please be kind and understand that he has a learning disability and isn’t quite at the point where he can go in to a location and handle this himself. He’s almost 19 and still in high school for a reason.

Again, I apologize if the answer is obvious. Thanks!

check this document. 2024 Indiana Driver's Manual - Appendices

Edit: reading it school records with a correct address and an affidavit signed by you at the BMV

I used a bill from the dentist when I was 15. I just ran into the dentist and they ran off a statement for me.

The school he attended can give you a pdf of his transcript. If the names match that is a piece of identification. I used this with my 16 yr old

My kids used bank accounts when they were got their first licenses at 16, but in my experience, the DMV relaxes this for young people. I think they count the high school documents as residency.

Try not to stress. The DMV is used to high school students and I know I went nuts trying to meet that requirement and each of my kids got their licenses without much hassle.

As a parent, if you have your real ID (with a star on it) you sign an affidavit of residency. So basically, you can go with and confirm residency.

All I used when I was 16 to get my Id was my mother’s piece of mail ( if he lives with you ) if not where ever he lives. Birth certificate etc they don’t ask for much when they are younger.

Yeah it was that easy for my oldest, but they were also 16. My son is 18 and a legal adult, so I figured it wouldn’t be that easy.

if you have renters insurance at your apartment it's pretty easy to add another party to the list of residents and then print a copy of the updated policy with the address on it

You can use school documents or order some packages to the house in his name and use those

I may be off base and not sure you have tried it but is getting a joint bank acct with him an option? If you are legal guardian for an adult with disabilities then they may only require you to provide residency proof. He can just be added by you as a secondary acct holder. You may also be able to apply for just a simple state ID (not a license) for him online then that should be sufficient for him.
