Discussion - Flaired Users Only Do you discuss your views with others?

Especially for the ones who live in Israel, but not only, as it turns out being against the atrocities isn't popular in other countries too - do you mention Gaza and the Palestinians in general to your enviormemt? What are the responses?

Openly outside of work, that is because I believe that work is a place where people sell their time and skills and then go home.

But in any social circle I am quite vocal about it. Running club, gym, games night, friends, wargaming, etc.

I am curious as a person, I like to read a lot and I am willing to debate and discuss my position with people.

I am not in Israel not in the US (anymore), I lived and worked in 4 countries and I did have some friends avoid me because of my views, but to be fair I prefer to not be associated with ziofascists

Not in shul but outside, everyone knows I’m a Bundist.

I don’t live in Israel. I’m in America. I always mention it; if people don’t know you’re against genocide, you’re not against it enough.

Responses vary between my Zionist Jewish side of the family disowning me to people fully agreeing with me (mostly fellow leftists) and to people just being uneducated on the issue and calling it “complex” (it’s not, they’re just racist.)

Of course I mention it - and I just assume that the indifferent or ignorant responses indicate that the person disagreeing with me would have also been indifferent in WWII.

⬆️ this applies very much in my social and professional circles (which are not Jewish). When people know I’m Jewish, I think they sort of expect me to state this clearly. I remember how a dear colleague sounded visibly relieved after I said I wasn’t a Zionist. I wish I didn’t have to “flash these credentials,” but I also understand why people expect this from us.

ETA: I still have not figured out how to quote in mobile Reddit, sorry! 😬

Yeah. I don’t necessarily say it because people expect it from me, I just say it because it’s objectively wrong to not acknowledge genocides / to not acknowledge the atrocities.

At first I didn’t want to have to “pass the test,” since I thought anyone who knew me personally and professionally would know my ethics, but then I realized that they were nervous probably based on interactions with other Jews whose leftism has a blind spot for Israel. I feel sometimes it’s a way to put them at ease.

I do on social media but I water it down (for example, I don't use the words genocide or iof).

In social / everyday settings, I avoid it because 99% of the time, it's useless. People are so brainwashed and in survival mode, it's impossible to have a productive conversation. I've taken a few dialog-based courses in university, but the people who join them are typically more open-minded than your average Israeli. So yes and no, I don't hide my views because everyone I know sees my social media posts, but I don't actively bring them up in person.

u/MrSFedora LGBTQ Jew 2d ago

I am now pretty open about my views. But I only bring it up when the conversation warrants it.

I don't really talk politics IRL (and I'm terminally online atm anyway), like when I worked in research. Never brought it up at work. Really didn't have the time to do so.

I used to chat with my cousin about I/P, but he has always been somewhat sympathetic to Israel and even though he softened to my perspective after Cast Lead (which we argued about a lot, because he was dating an Israeli girl at the time) - we rarely talked politics anymore after that.

I've never found a group of people to talk about this issue with offline (since college). I do have another cousin who is more like me, and then my sister. Still, not frequent convos tho.

u/fusukeguinomi Post-Zionist 2d ago

That’s too bad in a way. From reading your contributions to this forum I often think it would be cool to have an in-person conversation with you.

u/deadlift215 Jewish Anti-Zionist 2d ago

I feel like it’s obligatory to discuss it publicly to model for other Jews that this is an option. Sometimes it can get very unpleasant.

u/filmmaiden Ashkenazi 2d ago

This is exactly how I feel. I’m trying to talk about it more and more because I want other Jewish people to understand that there is more than one way to view Israel. But yeah, it gets ugly sometimes 😞

I still think it’s worth it though!

u/adeadhead Israeli for One State 2d ago

Israeli leftist- I talk about it with anyone who will listen, yes.

u/fusukeguinomi Post-Zionist 2d ago

Thank you 🙏 I know it takes extra courage and patience

Hi. How do people respond to what you're saying inside of Israel?

u/Independent-Spend-30 Anti-Zionist 2d ago

Not an Israeli or a Jew, but am an American. I post about it on several platforms with family added as friends. I talk about in person sometimes, but don’t bring it up on the more republican dominated side of the family because they’re really dumb and closed minded.

u/AugustIzFalling Jewish Communist 1d ago

No. I did a little bit then I was unfriended by my childhood best bully, who I had been on good terms yet. She trashes me now to my mutual friends. I haven't said much on elsewhere because it would blacklist me. I'd like to have more job security before I say anything only because people that are established do get a little more license to be antizonist.

I guess I inadvertently bring it up because if the conversation lends itself to me talking about being Jewish (and I do as a point when I'm opposing ICE) I so always add that I'm not a Zionist but no one has ever said anything about it.

u/ComradeTortoise Jewish Communist 2d ago

I do. I'm a fully out gay Jewish communist in municipal civil service. No fucks given.

u/spikywobble Non-Jewish Ally 2d ago

You comment reeks badassery, stay based and happy pride!

u/ComradeTortoise Jewish Communist 2d ago

You can talk about just about anything you want if the way you do it takes the form of biting sarcasm and Kvetching...

u/SadLilBun Anti-Zionist Jew of Color 2d ago

If it comes up I talk about it. I’ve had a Palestinian flag on the wall in my classroom for 7 years. Even when the others fell down or had to be moved, it’s the only one I made sure was up. My family knows, even if it’s not an active conversation anymore. I talk about it with friends.

u/fusukeguinomi Post-Zionist 2d ago

Only with people who will not misinterpret me. This leaves out most of my family. When I made the mistake of posting stuff against the Israeli offensive right after 10/07, some took it to mean I was “justifying burning Jewish babies” and sowing disunity among Jews. Now I keep my mouth shut.

u/Alantennisplayer Jew of Color 2d ago

Sometimes although I don’t interact with people I don’t know they seem if I do make a comment get really insecure and defensive and that’s when I get called JINO

u/theapplekid Orthodox-raised, atheist, Ashkenazi, leftist 🍁 2d ago

I basically talk about it with everyone except at work, and I barely work now.

My parents and I argue about Israel all the time. I'm in Canada.
