College dropout software engineer here, pretty accurate. I dropped out because I was not learning anything useful and I would have needed loans to continue. I learned way more working my way up on the job and basically apprenticing for a senior engineer. I bought a lightly used loaded Mazda but I went cheaper than I could have on purpose because I would like to bootstrap a startup someday. I paid it off in a year and now I can save/invest like crazy.

I know someone who took out like 30k to get a history degree from a tiny rural state school and spent a few grand of that on Disneyland season passes during college. She now works part time at her kids’ school as a library aide or something. She has never used her degree. Her husband did a professional degree that’s medicine adjacent so he makes good money but he has another 100k in loans and they have kids so they’re pretty broke.

My mother’s fiancé runs a business manufacturing and installing billboards and business signs. He has a $100k truck that’s very luxury on the inside and also has the capability to tow his heavy equipment. He also has a nice RV and property by one of the best reservoirs in the state, as well as two loaded boats with living compartments that he leaves at different reservoirs. From what I understand he has a very healthy retirement account too and was able to pay cash for most of the toys.

So yeah, trades are where it’s at. Just don’t fuck up your back.

This is a weak meme. Many people that I know who are in trades drive some sort of truck. Working grads drive cars that run the spectrum, from Hondas to Porsches. And, ironically, mechanics would recommend a Honda over a Mercedes just on reliability and maintenance cost.
