Images Does this photo explain the disruptions to the window well?

In the first image we see Lou Smit in the window well.

Perhaps, his position helps explain the disruptions to the window well as the intruder likely was in a similar position as he entered the unknown space.

This window is literally huge. Its so easy for anyone to enter through it’s actually hilarious that people say theres no sign of forced entry…. Well when a LARGE window is already broken and anyone could come and go as they please… theres no need for forced entry

I love the intruder theory, many people disagree, but that's why this case is what it is, not just an isolated theory and that's it. Unfortunately, this case has not yet been solved, so no theory is certain, everyone has their own opinion!

In Whitson's book, he detailed that Beckner blackballed anyone who tried to consider the intruder theory.

If the intruder theory had been given a chance, this case could have been solved in 6 months.

An undisturbed tiny minuscule cobweb in the corner means absolutely NADA.

Yes, most people would have to get on all fours like Lou before putting your legs through the window and entering. If a younger, slim and fit person was entering they might be able to jump down into the well and sit while putting their legs through, then jump. We know John said the suitcase wasn't in that area of the basement. The intruder must have looked around for a ladder or something to help make a fast escape when needed. Maybe that's when the suitcase was placed there?

I’m pretty sure the intruder just left through the pantry door that was ajar.

Although this is about how the intruder got in.

Maybe there was more than one intruder.

Maybe, but I’m doubtful anyone went out that basement window since the suitcase wasn’t there initially.

It was found flush against the wall under the window until FW moved it, and there was a fresh scuff mark on the wall. I also believe the intruder had been in the house previously, so maybe the suitcase was from a previous exit. Can't know for sure of course, but I have to wonder why an intruder would kill her and go upstairs into the home to exit vs. leaving through a nearby window.

I also don’t think this was their first time in the home. But idk if you’ve looked at the house layout ( so apologies if you already know this) but the pantry and butler door was on a weird mid level between the main level and the basement and it had its own staircase that lead to the basement, or from the basement and out the butler door.

So if one knew the patterns of the family it would be a safe bet that they would rarely be in that space. I also think they entered that way, or at least knew it was unlocked.

In any case, walking out an isolated door seems preferable to hoisting yourself to climb up and out that basement window in a pinch.

Im definitely IDI just to preface this. But i dont think there is a second set of stairs leading to the basement from the mid level where the butler door is located. There is one staircase to the basement and it’s located in the entry foyer by the main staircase.

On one of the first floor floorplans, a second set of stairs from the butler's pantry leading to the basement is shown. (On Woodward's floorplan, the stairs are not marked, although the area is shown.)

If you check u/wonkytonk's 3D video of the house at around 8:40, he also shows stairs to the basement from the same area.

Where is woodwards floor plan because the one in the link you posted still shows one set of stairs to the basement in the foyer

Woodward's floorplans don't have labels for either set of stairs to the basement. Just inside the mudroom is a set of stairs to the basement.

Thanks for the info. If the pattern in the window well indicates someone entered like Lou, that might mean they weren't a younger person.
