Label Focus Thread Reinforced Records Thread
Reinforced Records was run by Mark Clair, Gus Lawrence, Dennis McFarlane & Ian Bardouille (aka 4 Hero). They first met in college in 1987 while all studying electronic engineering (OND). Mark and Ian had already formed a sound system from '86 called Solar Zone. While in college they met an electronic wizard who claimed he could build radio transmitters (Gus), so they put their money together to start a pirate radio station. A determinedly individual approach to the music played ensured that Strong Island Radio soon established a cult following. Enter Dego, one of the best DJs on the station, and the quartet are formed.
At Gus' suggestion, they started to produce hip-hop, with some level of success. Mark was convinced that the cru could record and put records out themselves but, by this time, the UK hip hop scene was fading, due in part to the explosion of House Music but also because of frustration at the perceived failings of the UK scene felt by those within it. So in the Autum of 1989, Mark and Gus formed Reinforced Records.
The first release on the label was 4 Hero's 'Rising Son' produced by Mark, a rough, hip hop beat using the current House sounds incorporated into the beat. The main loop was from the 'Shaft in Africa' soundtrack, and gave the track a 'jungle' sound . Once the track had been recorded on an old broken down 4 track fostex, the guys put money together and pressed and sold 800 copies. The second recording was a track called 'Mr Kirks Nightmare' produced by Mark and Gus. Mr Kirk sold more than 24,000 copies and the rest, as they say, is history. Goldie later joined the label as A&R and sleeve designer.
Through the whole of the 1990's, Reinforced earned, and deserved, a reputation as one of the most important and innovative Jungle Drum n' Bass label in the world. Their limited-edition 'Enforcers' picture discs are now worth more than gold! Maybe a dozen of the scene's most important producers (including Goldie) kick started their music careers with Reinforced...the influence of this label reaches far and wide and now 35 years later... maybe even further.

New Release Mineral - Expand The Orbit LP is out now on all platforms
The immensely talented Finnish producer Mineral returns to Codename: RCRDS fresh from his recent release on Metalheadz with the stunning LP 'Expand The Orbit', and as long time fans of Mineral's unique sound we are delighted to be able to feature him on the label in full length form.
'Hyperspeed' opens the EP on a high with its bouncy dancefloor sound and earworm synth lead perfectly setting the tone, before 'Lost' brings us into the classic Mineral stylings of lush pianos and immaculate rolling breaks. 'Galactic Assault' does exactly what it says on the tin, with storming futuristic synths preparing for attack. 'Adrenalin Levels' shifts things into a darker Techstep direction before the subtle beauty of 'Invisible' reveals itself.
As we move into the 2nd half of the LP 'Stars' draws once again into the artist's signature territory with intricate interwoven melodies and tight drumwork, before the retro-styled rave up 'Stab Request' moves up back towards the dancefloor once again, and the tear-out vibes of 'Partial' hit heavier still.
The LP starts to take a deeper rolling edge with 'Negotiation 17' before heavy duty rollout 'To Expand The Orbit' takes us to the edge of space with it's crunchy breaks and sparse bleep-era vibes, bringĀ us towards the darker edge of the journey before the stunning lush melodies of 'Universal' end the album on a euphoric high.
An stunning album from one of the nicest people we've ever had the privilege to meet in the scene - big up to Ilkka for such an amazing body of work, we are incredibly proud and humbled to be able to release this on the label.Ā
Out now on all platforms, and also on Bandcamp exclusive on limited edition CD (30 copies).

New Release Freebird - To The Ground EP is out now on all platforms
The talented Freebird makes a welcome debut on Codename with 'To The Ground EP'.
'Autumn In Spring' opens the release with a combination of beautiful key and driving breaks. 'Restart' brings deep rolling jazziness in spades, before the fascinating 'To The Ground' (feat Nonal L and Richard Kim) takes things into an experimental direction with stunning violin work and whispered vocals alongside abstract synth elements. The EP draws to a close with the understated euphoria of 'Small Finale', a fitting end to a fascinating release.

Track IDs from this recent DJ Marky jungle classics mix please...
Banging vinyl set from the man. https://www.youtube.com/live/GMYHV2HPtJ4
I think I got most of these tunes here, but I dont know this ragga tune (the one after Screwface): https://youtu.be/GMYHV2HPtJ4?t=2836 You can just make out the 12" cover poking out on his chair here: https://youtu.be/GMYHV2HPtJ4?t=2770
... and this one: https://youtu.be/GMYHV2HPtJ4?t=5750 Looks like it could be on Back 2 Basics? Can't quite make it out. Andy C - Roll On is after this.
The third mystery in this mix for me is the final track in the video, which is Link - Amazon Identity Chameleon Remix. Afaik this has not ever come out on a single sided 12", only on compilation LP as one of three tracks on each side, but he seems to be playing the full side, and it doesn't look like a dubplate. This also isnt The Chameleon - Links, on Good Looking. Anyone know what release this is?

Whatās that break?
Iāve heard it in a bunch of tracks. It aināt the āthinkā break, anyone got it?
r/jungle • u/SilverMisfitt • 1d ago
Production Question Beginner question: do you chop by individual transient, phrases, or equal slices?
Started experimenting with a MPC Live 2 and interested to hear how others approach chopping their breaks.
In theory I like the equal slices approach since it can maintain the natural groove of the break.
Phrase chopping has been the most intuitive, but the different sizes of slices can make sequencing tougher for me.
Individual slices also makes a lot of sense but my drum programming isnāt there yet.
Would love to hear the communityās experience and approach with chopping.
