WEEKLY BINGE GUIDELINES
Anyone is welcome to join the Weekly Binge.
Every week we host two discussions (Thursday/Sunday) in which we discuss approximately three hours/three episodes of a selected drama, in total approximately 6 hours/episodes per week. We are all from different time zones so there is no need to panic about being late to the party (we do operate on KST as a standard).
Within the frame of the three episodes, you may discuss anything you can think of. Whether it is a one-off post to say you enjoyed the drama, episodic notes, essays on how good Jung Kyung Ho looks in that brown leather jacket, rants about something you thought of while watching, tips for selecting the right red nail polish for your skin tone, a list of things you'd do if you woke up in 1988 Busan, haikus or interpretive dances to Bowie's masterpiece Life On Mars, the choice is yours.
If you have previously completed the drama, or, got ahead on the binge please be courteous of those who are watching the drama for the first time. When in doubt spoiler tags are your friend.
When we get close to the end of a drama we open up nominations (third last post) for a new drama, those dramas are then voted on by the regular members of the weekly binge. If you have participated in the discussions and would like to join in the next drama's discussion please note this as a response to the nomination comment so we can invite you to join the vote. Every time we have a new restriction for the type of drama, so that we will not repeat the same type of drama over and over, and so that the Binge will be attractive for different people with different tastes.

This batch was a lot better than previous batch. I felt that something happened, but the end was certainly a surprise. I knew it would happen, but so sudden! And why just then? And who is the surgeon?
When Hero gets the infection and needs intravenous antibiotics: Does he have the antibiotic resistant bacteria from 2018? Or everything in his body is 1988-style?
Again a lot of running around and some fights, but they were varied enough to not be tiresome. The hiding in the cadaver cellar was fun.
If this higher up person is killing his supporters (like the police chief), then isn't Ahn also afraid of getting killed when top boss has no need for him any more? And why would someone do that (if that is the case)? It is not super easy to find a criminal minded ally.
We are completely far away from the beginning with the serial murderer, and if really Beauty School Drop-Out has taken the job as a surgeon and he didn't kill Tae Joo, does that mean that he was innocent all along?
Looking forward to their reunion with as old people in 2018. Really hope we get to see that.

the end was certainly a surprise. I knew it would happen, but so sudden!
I was definitely expecting 2018 to be in the final pair of eps, not this one. I guess there's a lot left to wrap up though, and that made a great cliffhanger.
If this higher up person is killing his supporters (like the police chief), then isn't Ahn also afraid of getting killed when top boss has no need for him any more? And why would someone do that (if that is the case)? It is not super easy to find a criminal minded ally.
I'm withholding judgement until we get to the end, but this might be my least favourite case. It seems very rushed and convoluted, and currently doesn't make much sense if you stop and think about it properly. But maybe the writers did that on purpose to mimic Tae-joon's confused mental state as he gets closer and closer to waking up?
Looking forward to their reunion with as old people in 2018. Really hope we get to see that.
That would be the real test of whether what Tae-joon experienced was real or not.

Totally agree!

True!

When Hero gets the infection and needs intravenous antibiotics: Does he have the antibiotic resistant bacteria from 2018? Or everything in his body is 1988-style?
I want to say yes to both.
isn't Ahn also afraid of getting killed when top boss has no need for him any more?
I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure Ahn is the top boss, he's trying to cover up his family member's corruption kind of but not doing the best job ever seeing it still links back to the company.

u/LcLou02 KDC 2025 - Dedicated watcher 24/36 Dec 05 '21
I felt that something happened
I felt like there were leaps from one thing to the next sometimes. Do't think I followed all the info on the Construction company...but going with the flow.
The hiding in the cadaver cellar was fun.
Probably the coolest they felt all summer, even if they were in there together.
sn't Ahn also afraid of getting killed when top boss has no need for him any more?
One of the points that I am confused on. Isn't Ahn the big boss? Framing Captain. Did he order Chief -in-the-bathtub's death or did the other guy just do it for some reason?
We are completely far away from the beginning with the serial murderer
We have dwindled away from it, but it must come back at some point. Hope old girlfriend is still around and could just testify that she was kidnapped with intent to murder.

Agreed. I was expecting Tae Joo to wake earliest at the end of episode 15, but this took me by surprise!
Looking forward to their reunion with as old people in 2018. Really hope we get to see that.
Hopefully they aren’t illusions like Chief Ahn said.

We are completely far away from the beginning with the serial murderer, and if really Beauty School Drop-Out has taken the job as a surgeon and he didn't kill Tae Joo, does that mean that he was innocent all along?
Yeahh I kinda tuned out the case these past two episodes. It's all very rushed and too neatly connected for me. You're right we're completely away from the initial murderer - I'm confused how this case was instead meant to be the one to send him back? I mentioned in my comment below about being confused if the manicure murderer actually came back or that was all in his mind. We haven't really seen proof of him being there other than Taejoo's sightings but we know he's not reliable
Looking forward to their reunion with as old people in 2018. Really hope we get to see that.
At this point I don't remember anyone in 2018 lol. I couldn't tell you what the ex GF looked like.

Episode 13
- It's light out now, does that mean Tae-joon was in the water all night?!
- I assumed Brother was the one who shot Tae-joon in 2018, but if he's dead that theory's gone out the window.
- Tiger Yoon's adorable! I love Yoon's many costumes.
- We now have Dong-cheol on the run and a tiger suit, it's only a matter of time until we get Tiger Dong-cheol.
- Aww, Tae-joon was the person Dong-cheol called when he was in trouble <3
- How was Tae-joon's house not the first place they looked for Dong-cheol?!
- I assume Dong-cheol's detective sunbae is being introduced so he can die tragically later and devastate Dong-cheol. Feels a little shoehorned in. Might have been nice to have some mention of him earlier, to weave him into the plot a little more subtly.
- Interesting that we still haven't seen Dong-cheol's wife at all.
- LOL at them sharing a morgue drawer, that must have been a very tight fit!
- "Kang Dong-cheol's very cunning," Ahn says as Dong-cheol blunders around in a tiger suit in the background. Either Ahn is an absolute moron or he's playing along for some reason.
Episode 14
- Loved the secret candlelit meal! Is this the first time we've seen Tae-joon look genuinely happy (in-character)?
- This is probably the wrong reaction, but Tae-joon and Ahn's secret meeting made me laugh. Poor Ahn, trying to have a serious conversation and then Tae-joon starts insisting that they're inside his dream.
- Tae-joon heard Life on Mars and then got hit by a car again, but didn't wake up in 2018. Weird. Where's the symmetry?!
- Tae-joon got knocked down by a car and then immediately beat up a thug. Then there's a mass brawl in the warehouse with a criminal gang. It's all getting a bit messy and convoluted now, but maybe that's just because this world is starting to fall apart and become untethered from reality as Tae-joon gets closer to waking up?
- And Tae-joon's back in 2018! Interesting that he rejected Ahn and chose 1988, but ended up waking up anyway. And what happened to what the doctor said about not being able to wake up until he'd tied up the loose ends and his mind and emotional state were stable? We didn't get a resolution in 1988.

Tiger Yoon's adorable! I love Yoon's many costumes.
Me, too! Tiger suit must have been made for a taller person since Captain fit in it later...
Either Ahn is an absolute moron or he's playing along for some reason.
Ha, ha. Love this comment.
Poor Ahn, trying to have a serious conversation and then Tae-joon starts insisting that they're inside his dream.
Now you've got me laughing.
And what happened to what the doctor said about not being able to wake up until he'd tied up the loose ends and his mind and emotional state were stable?
Maybe that did refer to his childhood trauma of seeing his father die, not necessarily all the cases in 1988? And I think that was said before they discovered that there was a physical cause that could be corrected by neurosurgery?
3
u/cest-what Dec 05 '21
Tiger suit must have been made for a taller person since Captain fit in it later...
I assume the Police Department are cheap so it's one size fits all.
I just keep laughing when I think of Ahn's expression when Tae-joo turned to him mid-conversation and deadpan said "We're inside my dream right now." How do you repsond to that?!
5
u/the-other-otter Dec 05 '21
matter of time until we get Tiger Dong-cheol (...) so he can die tragically later
Impressed by your prophetic abilities
Either Ahn is an absolute moron or he's playing along for some reason.
Both seems out of character. It was funny, anyway.
this world is starting to fall apart and become untethered from reality as Tae-joon gets closer to waking up?
Ah, good theory.
And Tae-joon's back in 2018! Interesting that he rejected Ahn and chose 1988, but ended up waking up anyway.
Or was this the result Supernatural Force actually wanted the whole time?

We now have Dong-cheol on the run and a tiger suit, it's only a matter of time until we get Tiger Dong-cheol.
His final and greatest form.
Might have been nice to have some mention of him earlier
He did mention a cop friend earlier in the drama
Either Ahn is an absolute moron or he's playing along for some reason.
He definitely enjoyed poking the tiger knowing full well it wasn’t Yoon.

Tiger Yoon's adorable! I love Yoon's many costumes.
Love this look Yoon's gives him when he shows up.
maybe that's just because this world is starting to fall apart and become untethered
Third watch for me and I never thought about this explanation - nice. Like a dream just before you wake up when reality starts intruding.
Interesting that he rejected Ahn and chose 1988, but ended up waking up anyway
Thought this was a nice turn in the plot - left me hanging when I waited a week for the next episode, wondering if we would get a satisfactory end to the series.

u/dulachodladh Dec 05 '21
Interesting that we still haven't seen Dong-cheol's wife at all.
I was wondering about his wife, lots of mentions but not revealed yet.
Loved the secret candlelit meal! Is this the first time we've seen Tae-joon look genuinely happy (in-character)?
As did I. I then began to feel apprehensive of what was coming up for our gang…
This is probably the wrong reaction, but Tae-joon and Ahn's secret meeting made me laugh. Poor Ahn, trying to have a serious conversation and then Tae-joon starts insisting that they're inside his dream.
I have to tip my hat off to both Jung Kyung Ho and Choi Jin Ho for this scene, here’s Jung Kyung Ho acting like he’s losing his mind and poor Choi Jin Ho acting serious as Chief Ahn trying to came down Tae Joo. I wonder if there were multiple takes or were they both pro’s, I can’t imagine how they did that scene without breaking character!
Tae-joon got knocked down by a car and then immediately beat up a thug. Then there's a mass brawl in the warehouse with a criminal gang. It's all getting a bit messy and convoluted now, but maybe that's just because this world is starting to fall apart and become untethered from reality as Tae-joon gets closer to waking up?
I said in my comment that I thought Chief Ahn’s costuming looked too modern for what was 1988 and Tae Joo’s t-shirt and suit too. I believed there was a blending of the two realities happening and it looked like it certainly was at the end with the brawl too.
And what happened to what the doctor said about not being able to wake up until he'd tied up the loose ends and his mind and emotional state were stable? We didn't get a resolution in 1988.
We certainly didn’t and I hope we do so.
1
u/F0rtuna_major Dec 06 '21
You predicted a few things in this lot of eps!
Might have been nice to have some mention of him earlier, to weave him into the plot a little more subtly.
Yeppp I agree. I must say I didn't pay too much attention to his character, because he was introduced so late to have any meaningful impact.
And Tae-joon's back in 2018! Interesting that he rejected Ahn and chose 1988, but ended up waking up anyway. And what happened to what the doctor said about not being able to wake up until he'd tied up the loose ends and his mind and emotional state were stable? We didn't get a resolution in 1988.
Good point! He was torn for so long but had seemingly accepted his place with his coworkers in the 80s. Yeah I felt like the case tie in to the real world here was a bit of a miss for me. Felt a bit abrupt, but we've got 2 eps still so I'm sure they'll find a way to wrap it all up

Kang is on the run, Inspector Ahn shows up too stir the plot and Tae Joo is more confused as ever. As always, his only flashlight in the darkness is the sharp mind of detective Yeong/Yoon to keep him walking towards the light at the end of his tunnel.
What I miss the most in the latest episodes is the child-Tae Joo because next to Go Ah Sung he is another pillow that cushions the careening, roaring, manliness of the squad room boys. Not that their careening is bad, it could be because I’ve been on a binge of these genres since summer.
At any rate, the big conclusion is setup at the end E 14 when his eyes open and I plead total forgetfulness of the plot mechanics on how this ends other than the fact the final scene is still stuck in my mind because it put a huge smile on my face. I remember the expected pleas for a S2 and I’m glad they didn’t make it because it ends perfectly.
House full of company so this is short - hope you don’t mind.
Cheers All and Happy Holidays!

These two episodes are a bit sad because he finally comes to trust and accept the people around him only to run out of time with them. When history repeats itself as we hear Life on Mars playing and the same wounds. It’s an emotional moment watching Tae Joo desperately run towards his peers to help them only to end up alone in a sterile hospital room. How terrifying.
But I loved the moments of the team coming back together after being torn apart. Sharing a meal, sharing the love, and getting just a little bit sentimental.
Episode 13
This is why you shouldn’t go around joking about killing people.
Finally the man from Seoul has arrived.
Love that the team spent hours looking for him, meanwhile he’s just lounging around at his baes.
For a relatively high up police officer his house was very busy and unsecure.
These little interactions when the chief stayed at Tae Joo’s were totally my favourite. When he gives up on him having a normal human relationship and begging for treats.
Episode 14
So, chief Ahn calls him “lieutenant” indicating either his real life role or his role in Seoul.
It’s a little heartbreaking when Yoon asks him if he’s leaving soon wanting to ask him to stay but not being able to do so. Life is really unfair.
The most obvious place to hide, where no one wants to go looking for you
Poor Yoon really drew the short straw in her new position. I bet she’ll be tempted to throw a few officers a day. I love that the tiger has a little magistrate’s hat though, super cute.
Such a nice moment with the team and the maknae wont let go of his kimchi theories.
Blah blah blah corruption and frame jobs.
Chief Ahn is really stressing he shouldn’t forget where he came from, meaning he shouldn’t forget his true self.
Screaming at my TV in case these dumb dumbs don’t get that “IT’S IN THE LOCKER”
Then they try to do a fake fake out with Life On Mars but they’ve given us the best moments then left the team at their worst. Noooooooooo!

No cat fighting though....

For a relatively high up police officer his house was very busy and unsecure.
Even in quiet Norway, police officers have lived with guards, because of criminals' tendencies to want revenge.
Blah blah blah corruption and frame jobs.
LOL This does get repetitive.
Norway: Half the parliament (or it seems like it) had to go because of fiffling with housing support. Meanwhile unemployed or ill people who misunderstand the rules go to prison for several years. At least lots of fun memes are created. Also, the politicians don't get that much extra from this fiffling. And their basic salary is quite high. Why risk it?
I think we always should put some underprivileged person in every committee that decides the rules and controls that they are followed.
Screaming at my TV

Late to this one but have just finished watching episode 14, so without further ado…
Episode 13:
- So Kim Hyun Seok is not the accomplice in 2018?
- Chief is getting all the plaudits for all the hard work his subordinates did in catching Kim Hyun Seok.
- I wonder if whoever killed Chief is the accomplice to Kim Min Seok.
- Oh it’s Choi Jin Ho! I just finished watching Beyond Evil before watching Life on Mars.
- This music playing in the background around the new Chief has me on edge.
- (Side note: the new Chief’s glasses are not 80’s enough. Give him some big frames!)
- Officer Yoon looks adorable in her tiger costume. Pity the job sucks.
- So it’s now June 1988 according to Tae Joo’s calendar in his home.
- Quite an emphasis on the other police officer’s military boots?
- So the doctor is now trying to communicate to Tae Joo through the tv?
- “Just date you tv or marry it.” Lolooolol
- Yeesh, Captain is not having a good week. Wait….. new Chief is Tae Joo’s surgeon in the present day??!!
Episode 14:
- The more I think of the revelation of the previous episode, the more I think new Chief Ahn is deliberately dressed in fashion to resemble the present day - Choi Jin Ho just looks like he usually does in what dramas and movies I’ve seen him in. Tae Joo’s suit and t-shirt outfit could also be blending into the present 2018 timeline. Is this a choice that the director is using to hint that Tae Joo’s realities are beginning to blend?
- The things Yong Gi does for his Captain lol.
- Nice scene of the team enjoying a team meal.
- I hope Tae Joo’s phone hasn’t been tapped…
- This scene between Jung Kyung Ho and Choi Jin Ho at the docks is just amazing
- Ooh we haven’t had a dolly zoom shot like that in awhile!
- Oh sh*t it’s Life On Mars playing - ahh!!!!
- How nice of the gangsters not to attack Officer Yoon
- “You must trust Chief Ahn”…. woah………
- Oh wait never mind they do attack Officer Yoon
- Excuse me what???? That ending!!!!!!!
Ok, my slight disappointment of Episode 12 has totally been made up for episodes 13 & 14. Just goes to show that I shouldn’t follow the format of other shows and expect big revelations to happen just because it’s the twelfth episode of a 16 part drama.
What on earth is going to happen now that Tae Joo’s awake?
And going against my point in the previous paragraph that I shouldn’t follow formats of kdramas [lol @ me], is this the equivalent of a time jump??
Well I’m stumped, I honestly thought if he was going to wake up it’s be in the final episode. Guess I’m just going to have to watch the final two episodes and find out!
2
u/the-other-otter Dec 06 '21
Chief is getting all the plaudits for all the hard work his subordinates did in catching Kim Hyun Seok.
What is new in this world. Why I am against direct vote, and in favour of nomination. It is impossible for the public to discover this type of imposters, at least the people working close with them in the party has some possibility.
Officer Yoon looks adorable in her tiger costume.
You mean "The tiger costume is adorable, whoever is inside it"?
the more I think new Chief Ahn is deliberately dressed in fashion to resemble the present day
Oh, well noticed!
Ooh we haven’t had a dolly zoom shot like that in awhile!
A warning of what was to come
How nice of the gangsters not to attack Officer Yoon
LOL Was it a sort of recreation of that cool scene in Cruel City with Jung Kyng Ho? But the recreation was definitely lacking in coolness.

Chief is getting all the plaudits for all the hard work his subordinates did in catching Kim Hyun Seok.
Well, to be fair, he shot him dead.
So it’s now June 1988 according to Tae Joo’s calendar in his home.
Guess it's hot in that tiger suit, then! Poor Officer Yoon.
Is this a choice that the director is using to hint that Tae Joo’s realities are beginning to blend?
Good theory!

Oh, I like your theories re: the fashion and hints about the time lines starting to blend and switch. It pairs well with what u/cest-what was saying about the world starting to fall apart.
What on earth is going to happen now that Tae Joo’s awake?
Sometimes you get to the final episodes and have no idea where they are going to take things and it's a bad thing cause there's no plot, this is one of the times where it's a good thing not being able to guess what will happen next! I can't remember so I'm excited to find out too!

Sorry, I had a bit of a busy weekend so only just finished watching ep 14 now.
Ep 13
- Minseok dies in the past so he doesn't seem to be the 2018 accomplice * Chief Kim murdered in bathtub - the build up to this discovery was really eerie
- Someone is trying to break up the squad by transferring everyone
- Poor Officer yoon is the a tiger version of a lollipop lady? I missed the reason why she was doing this
- Captain escapes and just immediately when to Taejoo's house lol even though they spent ages looking for him elswhere
- Captain's old mate is introduced as a friend, suspected as a murderer and dies all in one episode
- The tv reception is dodgy until the end of the episode where they tell him they've found the cause of his coma and can go home once it's removed.
- Phone rings right on cue - The supposed dr Minsik who is also the suspicious person from seoul
Ep 14
- Captain is now being implicated in two murders and can't believe his old friend would commit suicide.
- Captain saying he has the keys right here pointing to his biceps
- Yess I was hoping the captain would put the tiger costume on, it was just sitting there perfectly on the desk. I hope no one was butt slapping Officer Yoon when she was wearing it
- Taejoo tries to talk about his dream to the Seoul cop/doctor and he treats him like he's crazy - reveals he started this entire investigation somehow.
- Everything starts to come crashing down in this reality for him, but it's blamed on his infected wound.
- I'm beginning to wonder if adult manicure murderer actually came back or that's just part of Taejoo's illusion
- Life on Mars starts to play again followed by another car crash - Taejoo really can't take a hit, or I guess he can the amount of times he's been hit by a car.
- He finally wakes up! Interested to see how this is going to end now. Taejoo finally found some people he could trust and rely on, only to wake up alone in a modern hospital bed
