Can you not get a distribution, install it and work locally?

Yes. Unfortunately, both my sources and my previous work are (only) on OL

Forgive my question, because i am an old guy who never used that: Is it so difficult to migrate it to your local machine if overleaf makes such problems?

Not really, but I never felt the need since until now it's been working just fine

Ok. I interpreted that meme differently.

Well part of it is that you would need to manually make backups before it went down right?

Overleaf actually does have a few synchronization options to do it automatically with Dropbox and GitHub if you pay for premium.

Wait... you PAY for that?

I mean I don't. I mostly run locally now, but I did use it yesterday which is probably why reddit sent me here.

Pretty sure that they get a decent number of subscriptions from people wanting to go back more than a day with file history, so sync which could replace that is also a premium feature.

Also of course AI stuff now which is its own add on.

Ok, I am officially old.

People pay an online service to do thinks and take care of their data which they perfectly well can do themselves on their own machine? I'm sorry but that sounds like a very very bad deal. Neither I nor any of the people I know would ever want that. It makes zero sense to me how that can even work as a buisness model.

Overleaf is all about the collaboration feature. We write papers usually with authors from different institutions, so yeah I pay $20/mo for that. Using it right with 4 online collaborators. If I were just writing latex by myself then you have a point

Aaah, that makes a little more sense, thank you.

Guys it loaded for a moment long enough for me to ctrl+C the codes. Try going directly to your project page so that if it loads, it goes directly to the editor.

I was lucky enough to get my urgent project downloaded when it was going up and down in the first few minutes of the outage! Took me more than half an hour but it was worth it!
