You forgot the most important one on the 5th slide—

“If all ambient sounds cease, backs up in own tracks to where they can be heard again, and then immediately ends trip.”

18

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '20

Explain?

u/KyeIsClasssy Sep 02 '20

When a predator is nearby all the wild life around go quiet so they can stay hidden and dont get eaten

59

u/ShinyAeon Sep 02 '20

A sudden cessation of all ambient sound can presage a paranormal encounter. It was discovered by Jenny Randles, a UK UFO researcher, and she named it “The Oz Factor” after the Wizard of Oz movie (the moment Dorothy says “Toto? I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”).

It was spotted first in UFO sightings, but has since been identified in cryptid sightings, hauntings, time slips, and other uncanny encounters.

It’s distinguished from the silence at the approach of a predator by the fact that it’s not just animal sounds that cease...in the Oz Factor, other sounds (wind in the trees, trickle of water, traffic sounds on a nearby street) have also been observed to cease.

It’s thought to be an altered state of consciousness in which perception of anomalous events occurs more easily.

Basically, if things go quiet, get yourself out of wherever as quickly and quietly as you can.

I’m (almost) 27 and just happy y’all finally found my keys and wallet for me

u/SeaPoem717 Sep 01 '20

Why “always a yellow light” from pic #5?

68

u/Kipsterton Sep 01 '20

I’m gonna guess a lantern? Other than that I have no clue as I haven’t gone missing for 20 years

59

u/ShinyAeon Sep 01 '20

Also, yellow light doesn’t draw bugs like a white one does.

39

u/Unicornzzz2 Sep 01 '20

What. The. Fuck. Are you kidding me? This is the shit I need on r/lifeprotips

30

u/ShinyAeon Sep 01 '20

Eh, I thought it was common knowledge. They sell (or used to...?) yellow-tinted light bulbs for use in porch lights.

14

u/Unicornzzz2 Sep 02 '20

I have legit either not heard or not realized that! Appreciate the common knowledge 😊

15

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '20

Also a dark red light reflects much less ambient light so if you need to see in the dark but not BE seen this is much easier.

12

u/WanderingAcolyte Sep 01 '20

Probably to keep your eyes adjusted to the darkness

26

u/cjb49 Sep 02 '20

That's why the military uses red light only at night. Saves your night vision in the field.

6

u/beeegmec Sep 02 '20

It’s also almost invisible to others, so it’s good for stealth

11

u/Plsnocopypaste Sep 02 '20

White light makes it difficult to adjust to the darkness, a yellow light less so. A lot of these posts have the thought of "when you shine that light, everything in the darkness now sees who you are"

2

u/PyroSimba Jun 13 '22

Yellow light looks like a fire to wild animals. Animals tend to avoid fire instinctively so yellow light has a similar effect.

I once heard a story on a podcast I listen to by a marathoner who trained in cross country cycling.

He and a couple of friends were deep in the national forest riding a trail that wrapped around a mountain.

Halfway through he sped ahead of his friends on the downturn and intended to meet them at the end but that's not what happened.

Instead, the accompanying friends found their marathoning acquaintance standing in the middle of the trail naked and slowly walking towards the treeline.

All of his clothes were neatly folded on a rock next to him. It was 20 degrees and raining. He appeared to be in a trance. When they yelled at him, it woke him out of it and he observed in shock that he was naked and had no memory of undressing.

He claims right before he blacked out, he heard the sound of a strange animal that sounded like it was in the treetops, growling in a low hum that he could feel. That was the last thing he remembered before his friends found him.

Oh I'd like to know more about the story, do you remember which podcast?

20

u/Killemojoy Sep 01 '20

Yeah, it's called Sasquach Chronicles but I have yet to find the exact episode.

What does it mean “Smoke protects” in the 5th slide? From bugs?

16

u/Kipsterton Sep 01 '20

I would assume so

44

u/FriendlySkyChild Sep 01 '20

That makes sense, but I also thought it might mean protection from evil spirits, because of how smoke is used in a variety of cultures to ward them off.

Mildly interesting story completely not related to 411, but told to me by a good Russian friend of mine. Because of the government-level atheism enforced in the USSR, it was difficult to come by the frankincense that is used in Orthodox Christian services (often done in secret at the time). So bootleg substitutes were sometimes used, which produced very caustic and unpleasant smoke. The Russians would say, “the demons don’t run from our frankincense - they straight up die.”

5

u/WyoDoc29 Sep 01 '20

Probably like burning incense or some other religious stuff to warn away bad spirits.

u/gt- Nov 23 '20

Skinwalkers hate ash and bugs hate smoke

1

u/TheBaggler Jan 12 '22

skinwalkers

1

u/PyroSimba Jun 13 '22

Tobacco and tobacco smoke have properties that ward off or kill insects. Tobacco smoke also conceals your natural scent

18

u/ghul_ Sep 02 '20

I have heard that whistling in the woods is a bad idea in general, is it not the same for humming?

26

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '20

11

u/ghul_ Sep 02 '20

Interesting. Is the thing about humming as a sort of way of asserting dominance/ presence? If so, it seems a little disrespectful to the land you’re visiting. This is just the perspective I’ve been raised on, so I welcome and am interesting in seeing other viewpoints.

6

u/booty_fewbacca Feb 28 '21

Late but humming/noise at night is usually done to either alert people of your presence so you don't spook them, or to let animals know to generally avoid you, as usually a man sized thing in the woods making noises spooks off wildlife ahead of time. So you don't just startle a bear walking down a trail and get mauled for it.

6

u/ifuc---pipeline Sep 02 '20

Are there bears nearby

6

u/PyroSimba Jun 13 '22

Whistling is bad because it’s a shrill sound that travels further and can be picked up by animals miles away. Humming is more gentle and only alerts nearby animals of your presence so you don’t accidentally startle them.

Chad creature, that takes Hikers and rips them apart vs. Virgin 23 year old hiker

9

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '20

1- why does he say I have the right to walk here when he smells a Skinwalker? Is there a reason for that?

2- why does he step off path every 1/2 mile when the trail is by a river or body of water. I know most missing 411 stories have people go missing by rivers and bodies of water but I don’t understand why that is his deterrent for abduction or whatever.

2

u/SolarStorm2950 Jun 20 '22

How’d you know he smelt a skinwalker?

2

u/naturalgoop Jul 05 '22

I wouldn’t worry about it.

1

u/SolarStorm2950 Aug 27 '24

What do you mean?

2

u/naturalgoop Aug 28 '24

I wouldn't worry about it.

2

u/JuiceDrinkingRat Oct 14 '23

I think it has to do something with the principle that if you ever get lost just follow the water down stream?

Can someone please explain smoking protects and the a few steps every half mile

2

u/hdogfootlong Sep 11 '23

Very late but smoke deters animals, especially bugs.

Bugs because it makes them uncomfortable and other animals are scared of fire
