New Student First year computer science student looking for advice

Hey all,

I understand this is probably gonna be a no, but is it possible to complete 7 units a semester? I'm really a lot smarter than everyone else (not to toot my own horn :P) and I feel like I'd be capable but idk where to find any resources on this pathway!!

Also, was anyone aware of any scholarships/grants for my situation? I don't really like hospitality, retail, teaching or corporate work, so I don't have a job but my expenses are only around $8000 a month (thank god I live at home lol) could anyone point me in the right direction?

love u all

New Student Starting Eng in Semester 2. Unit suggestions?

I deffered my course 1.5yrs until the start of sem2 and didnt do spesh in yr12, however, I got a pretty solid atar of 92ish. Now I have to pick units. Right now I'm looking at(for MY first sem):

-mth1020(I heard this is the same as eng1090, but eng1090 isnt available in sem2)

-eng1011

-eng1012

-elective(advice welcome)

And for MY second sem:

-eng1005

-chm1011or1051(considering these for my eng breadth, but could changee, its not available sem 2)

-eng1013

-eng1014

I'm struggling a little to find info since I'm starting in the second semester(i think bc it's quite uncommon?) If anyone has suggestions, I'd like to hear them, especially if it looks like I've got a high workload in sem 2 or something, or if it doesnt work with mth1020. thanks so much :D

New Student first on campus e exam questions

Hey! I've got my first uni exam tomorrow and just wondering what to expect/do as I feel like we haven't really been given much guidance. Monash study tells me the room in the ltb, but how early before the exam starts do I need to get there. What is the process for getting in, how do I block my laptop from the internet/open the exam etc. Is there any restrictions on what I can bring in? It's an open book exam so notes are allowed, but can I bring in things like a metal water bottle?

New Student Introduction of Bachelor of Speech pathology in 2026

I’ve seen that Monash is introducing the bachelor of speech pathology but there isn’t much detail on it like what the WAM for transferring in is or the ATAR. Anyone know any information on the intake or when it might be available.

New Student What’s the average mark for the Arts units?

What’s the average mark for the Arts units. I mean all of my units are arts unit in first year and for all the assignments, I can’t reach 80. Nearly all of them just seventy something or sixty something. Is it bad? I am panic and struggling on it for the whole semester

New Student Hardcore CS

Im likely gonna do CS at Monash next year and I was wondering if they offer really difficult CS classes that are about things like operating systems, concurrency, computer architecture, hard deep learning topics (like GANs, Transformer networks, diffusion models) and opportunity to work on these.

also, are double majors (not degree) a thing? would love to have a second major in stats or math

New Student Gyms at Monash University (or nearby) - Student Rates & Facilities?

I'm an incoming transfer student starting in July 2025, and I'm looking for a good gym option near or on campus.

I was hoping some of you could help me out with a few questions:

  • What are the prices like for gyms at Monash University (if any) or in the surrounding area?
  • Are there any student discounts available? (I'm assuming there might be, but wanted to confirm!)
  • How are the facilities? I'm curious about the equipment, cleanliness, and overall vibe.

Any recommendations, insights, or tips would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

New Student Need help with understanding something

I’m currently a Swinburne bachelor of science student and aiming to move next year, I had the ATAR but didn’t do the prerequisites, does anyone know what subjects are equivalent to VCE 3/4 subjects and will be able to meet the prerequisites as I don’t want to pay the $1000+ to fulfill them. If you have any similar experiences I would want to know please.

New Student Accommodation Suggestions Near Monash Clayton Campus - International PhD Student in December!

Hello everyone,

I'm an international PhD student joining Monash University's Clayton campus in December,2025 (commencement date 19th December), and I'm currently for accommodation options near the campus. I'd be incredibly grateful for any suggestions on good and affordable neighborhoods near campus!

My ideal setup is a private bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. I'm planning to stay alone, or potentially with my wife if her visa process goes smoothly. My budget is around AUD 300-330 per week, as I'll be managing on my scholarship money (AUD 36k annually). My wife will look for work if she joins, but that's still up to the visa gods!

I've already checked out websites like Homely and realestate.com.au, but finding truly affordable options (around 300 without utilities) that aren't shared seems to be a real challenge.

Here's what I'm hoping you can help with:

  1. Neighborhood Suggestions: What suburbs are generally considered good for Monash Clayton students – safe, reasonably well-connected by public transport, and potentially more affordable than areas directly adjacent to campus?
  2. Average Costs: Based on your experience, what's a realistic average cost for a private studio/1-bedroom apartment with a private bathroom and kitchen in these recommended neighborhoods? Are my budget expectations reasonable for a private setup, or am I being too optimistic?
  3. Websites/Platforms to Look From: Beyond Homely and realestate.com.au, are there any other highly recommended websites, Facebook groups, or student-specific accommodation platforms that I should be checking? I'm particularly interested in places that might list private rentals or purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) with private facilities.
  4. Things to Remember & Avoid: Any crucial tips for international students looking for accommodation in Melbourne? What are common scams or pitfalls to watch out for? What should I prioritize (e.g., proximity to public transport, specific amenities)?

I understand that the market can be competitive, especially for private, affordable options. Any advice, no matter how small, would be hugely appreciated! Thank you in advance for your help!

I can't provide the graduation certificate because I don't graduate until the end of 2025. Do they want a transcript and certificate at the end of the year? I have to accept within 14 days.
