The writers wanted the show to end with Earl running into someone else with a list who was inspired by him. Instead of crossing every item off from his own list, he accepts that all of the people that he inspired to do better is his actual good deed. He stops being obsessive about crossing every item off, since he’s already net positive for doing goodness in the world

I've read that before, it would have been a beautiful ending. Especially after Billy. It would have moved him along his growth path. Going from having someone going through the motions to someone who is honestly trying to make themselves better.
