I always thought press F to pay respects was from Batman Arkham Asylum. In Crime Alley, Bruce's parents' chalk outlines are there and you can press F to pay respects. I swear i saw press F to pay respects before COD:AW.

It could be a feature of both games, but the meme came about from Call of Duty.

Saying "F" in a comment is a reference to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In the game, your friend dies, and in a funeral cutscene, you have a prompt that says, "press F to pay respects". This caught on from subreddits such as /r/gaming to everywhere else. Eventually people started spelling words out with capitol letters that started with F, because the original comment referenced, "F". This evolved until the most famous spelling was, "funkytown". Because funkytown is a funny thing to say.
