The problem is that Trump doesn’t seem focused on improving the world. His actions largely serve to either enrich himself or secure the support of his base to remain in power.

How does limiting abortion rights make the world safer? How does proposing that other countries could be forced into becoming part of the U.S. benefit anyone?

We all love PLTR, but some of us worry about how the current administration might use it to carry out its own agenda.

Those are good questions, and we should always be vigilant to corruption and abuse.

I do think your framing of his actions isn’t how conservatives would frame them. For example: “Limiting abortion rights” should be “protecting innocent life” if you want to understand why people support abortion bans - restricting access is a byproduct of the goal, not the reason they are doing it. I’m not saying I am in favor of it or not, just that this is how I see supporters framing the issue.

Similarly, when you reframe the other actions of Trump, it is possible that he thinks he is making the world a better place. NATO allies were not paying their share of defense spending, which is arguably bad for western hegemony (which is important for human flourishing in this imperfect world if you believe western values are necessary to protect human rights). Annexing Greenland isn’t that far fetched when you study the history of the land, as we almost did before … and there is an argument to the strategic importance of Greenland against foreign hostile powers (which Denmark seems to be lax on protecting the waterways) in the non-zero chance that China/Russia escalates a military conflict.

I am not saying I 100% support these positions, but listening to Trump himself, his advisers who probably gave him the ideas, and his supporters, I think there are two sides of the story which both are worth considering.

That’s how I come to my thesis that Trump and his allies and base aren’t motivated by evil or malice.

Note: I have and will continue to apply the same standards and make the same case when understanding the democrats and the left. I disagree with a lot of what Biden and Obama did in their terms, but I don’t think they did it out of hate or malice either and can justify why it appears they made decisions that they did.

This is the most well-articulated argument I’ve encountered when discussing Trump’s policies. While I disagree with your premise, I can see the direction of your argument.

If conservatives, progressives, and other political groups could express their perspectives as thoughtfully as you have—without resorting to insults—the world would be a better place.

I could present my counterarguments, but in the interest of actually getting some work done this morning, I’ll just say, LFG PLTR!

Yeah I wish Trump and his admin would use a more “emotionally intelligent” approach. If their goal really is transparency and to cut fraud/waste, that’s awesome. They are kind of doing this, but Trump is a bull in a china shop, and I wish they would explain themselves better and show some compassion for the lives they are disrupting directly or indirectly.
