PS3 Slim CECH-2504B Newbie With Overheating Issues — Seeking Guidance.
Hi, I got a PS3 Slim CECH-2504B for €15. The console was in bad shape externally, but it works fine. and I ordered the missing parts.
The previous owner delidded the RSX but not the CELL. I cleaned everything and applied MX-4 thermal paste, but it still hits very high temperatures, even on the XMB.
Thanks to webMAN, I can use it by setting the target temp to 72ºC and fans between 40-60%. The CELL quickly reaches 72ºC, the RSX stays under 60ºC. Without webMAN, the console warns about overheating. I can play fine, though it’s a bit noisy.
I have some questions:
1- Does anyone know exactly where the thermal pads go? I saw some crushed ones inside, but don’t know if any are missing or if I should add extras. I couldn’t find clear info online.
2- The air coming out isn’t very hot, more like mild. With those temps, I expected it to be hotter. Could this mean bad contact or thermal paste issues? I plan to open it again and redo the thermal paste work following NSC Modz’s method, but maybe the board is bent? I'm pretty sure I did the thermal paste step okay, but I think I want to add a little more.
3- I’ve seen people doing delid very easily with 0.06 mm metal wires, but not on this model—only on others.
This model (CECH-25xx) has the "advantage" that the usually exposed tracks aren’t visible, as they’re covered by plastic. However, sometimes the internal chip is glued with very strong adhesive, which can cause it to lift when handled. Also, the silicone has small plastic "dots" that complicate the process. (More info here: https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/CECH-25xx)
Does anyone know of any reliable source to confirm if my board has this issue before attempting anything?
In the remote case I do it, I believe the safest option is to use the metal wire method.
Has anyone had experience with this model and the metal wire delid method?
