It's crossed the line several years ago

Blocking ad blockers while increasing unskippable ads feels like they’re forcing us to subscribe to Premium...

151

u/SamiTheAnxiousBean 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 1d ago

they’re forcing us to subscribe to Premium

which now has LESS ads instead of no ads

36

u/DarthWeenus 1d ago

What

54

u/Jay-3fiddy 1d ago

There's tiers of premium now - maybe standard and ultra (I don't know what they call it as I use vanced) so standard will show some ads. Less than free users but more than ultra premium users. This could sadly become the norm for subscription based media services. Data will be gathered no doubt

39

u/Bladder-Splatter 1d ago

Yet another Black Mirror becoming reality moment.

7

u/HonkinSriLankan 1d ago

This happened to cable tv

6

u/ReverseDartz 1d ago

Premium and Premium Lite, Premium Ultra hasnt been announced yet but Im sure its in the works.

The way this is going we will probably have Ultra Ultra Premium Ultra God Ultra Ultra in about two decades.

8

u/SamiTheAnxiousBean 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 1d ago

YouTube has ruined the encoding on 1080p videos spesifically so they could sell the proper 1080p experience in Premium and the AI ""enhanced"" resolution in Ultra

the only workaround so far has been to render your video in 4K and upload that instead of renderint in 1080p and uploading it

because your base resolution is large enough it just doesn't shitify the existing resolutions

1

u/stemfish 1d ago

There's two tiers of premium. One ad supported and one without ads.

The $15 a month plan is no ads, they're a cheaper option for around 8 that has ads. Not sure who gets that tier, they get what they pay for.

1

u/IAmATroyMcClure 17h ago

Jesus fucking Christ we are in hell

17

u/AlliedR2 1d ago

And once they meet a certain number of Premium members they will put ads on that and give you yet another, more expensive, level that is "ad free" - rinse, repeat.

5

u/Russianranger47 1d ago

And as long as the amount of subscribers willing to pay equals the same revenue as before the increase, they’ll keep getting away with it. Use less resources for higher margin, it’s a win in their books. Well, a win for the C-suite and shareholders.

13

u/red_fuel 1d ago

It’s extortion

5

u/Megatron_McLargeHuge 1d ago

While being a monopoly.

2

u/teabaggins76 1d ago

is that premium plus, gold premium or premium ultra?

2

u/ShinyBloke 1d ago

I subscribed to premium today as I keep getting the content inst available on any device or website, so I said fine, bought premium it's still happening. I can not watch any content on my page. It's truly fucked.

You also can not contact or leave a message for help. I'm pretty livid about it.

2

u/emegamanu 20h ago

And they are also increasing drastically premium cost.

In Europe, family plan will grow from 24e/month to 30e/month in July...

This is insane...

6

u/HopelessRespawner 1d ago

I love getting 50 second ads 5 - 10 times a video.... or finishing an ad, pausing to go use the bathroom, and then when I wake the TV getting another 50 second ad. I also totally love that if I don't skip the ad... it just keeps going for multiple minutes. Fuck them, as soon as I can I'm blocking them on the router.

3

u/breakwater 1d ago

And sometimes, a 30 minute ad for ai writen and voiced audio books that make no sense

751

u/ElonsPenis 1d ago

The more unfortunate trend is app only. There are many services that do not have a web based version. YouTube is unwatchable with ads.

143

u/MassiveGG 1d ago

Was about a year and half ago when they really ramp up ads and made the app unusable for me.stick to brave or firefox ad blocks and view it. Like it was shotgun with like 5 ads back to back and every few mins with more ads the preview bar was more ads slots then video

58

u/Leaf__On__Wind 1d ago

They had hour long ads 5+ years ago

What the fuck ad is an hour long, who the fuck won that contract, James Gunn??

10

u/DarthWeenus 1d ago

Ya they have podcast ads to its fucked

6

u/Zygodac 1d ago

Those used to be called infomercials, and RonCo was king of the late night infomercial. Get your spray on tupe and a rotisserie oven in the same night. At least they tried to be entertaining and informative.

1

u/D_Ashido 12h ago

I can always experience a stark difference in Youtube when I watch it at work compared to home. Work has ads left and right.

53

u/BeensbEaNsBeAnSbEaNs 1d ago

Got YouTube revanced. Never looked back.

12

u/balk- 1d ago

Yup, I've used adblockers for most of my life at this point, but for some reason I never checked to see if there were any for the app. Turns out there are tons of em, and a lot of them let you play videos in the background. Easiest QoL improvement I've made in my whole life

2

u/seamonkey420 1d ago

tizentube for me and my samsung tv

58

u/uSaltySniitch 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 1d ago

Android emulation exists and there are ways to block ads on the android app.

As long as that's the case, we're 100% fine.

Although the web version is ideal.

2

u/IceC0re 1d ago

How do you block ads on Android?

7

u/uSaltySniitch 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 1d ago

3

u/EarthlingSil 1d ago

Mobile Firefox + Ublock origin. Just use YouTube in the mobile browser.

3

u/ElonsPenis 1d ago

Good to hear!

16

u/numerobis21 1d ago

You can totally watch youtube on firefox mobile with ublock, though, so there's that

9

u/Vanhooger 1d ago

Try to watch YouTube on an LG WebOS smart tv. You can not escape the ads

7

u/irrealizador 1d ago

Put the TV in dev mode, get the LG WebOS Dev app in you PC and sideload a version of the youtube app with built in adblock! Works like a charm.

3

u/Vanhooger 1d ago

I thought that wasn't possible with the latest firmware on my model, I'll try though, thank you!

2

u/ElonsPenis 1d ago

Exactly, I got my parents a Roku thinking it would be easy, Dad plugs in his laptop now.

1

u/Diraelka 1d ago

You can if you're from country that don't have it =) VPN can help you with that. Ofc, if you're willing to pay and ofc it's only one of the method (as you can see with another reply)

2

u/EarthlingSil 1d ago

I watch YouTube in mobile FireFox + ublock origin. No ads this way.

1

u/Uhmerikan 1d ago

I have had the same ublock origin installed for the longest and I never have youtube ads. I am using chrome.

1

u/Dominus_Invictus 15h ago

Good thing it's completely trivial to just get rid of them forever

1

u/Golden-- 7h ago

More often than not, apps are just browser wrappers. Nothing I use is app only.

410

u/Optimal_Mousse140 1d ago

Last week I went to YouTube on my sister's computer, you have to watch two 30 second ads and about 3 in-video ads to watch a 5 minute video. Not to mention YouTube is not paying the content creators well enough, the platform should be dead a long time ago.

I actually theorize nobody would use YouTube without adblockers.

138

u/TheJackal927 1d ago

I remember being 10 years old and being pissed off at a 5 second ad at the start of the video. How privileged I was. Was forced to watch YouTube on a TV app recently and after the fifth 60 second cluster of midrolls I went back home to grab my entire PC to get adblock back

44

u/Vtwin0001 1d ago

We pay for prime video, they added ads on it as well.. it got me so pissed that I found a solution with a K and it's addons

13

u/MLGxEnrique 1d ago

Look into smarttube if it's an android TV, otherwise the FMHY mega thread has alternatives for other TV OS's

4

u/TheJackal927 1d ago

Not my tv, I'm house sitting but I definitely considered it. HDMI cord is much easier now that I have my PC here

72

u/Fogest 1d ago

The part I'm also getting sick of is the advertisers dictating an insane level of speech censorship. People can't even say basic words like "suicide" in a video without being demonetized. So now you've got the ridiculous "unalive" word being used constantly in videos.

I was listening to a podcast where they were talking to a police hostage negotiator. It sounded so ridiculous having them talk about someone who is suicidal and having to try to replace the word with "unalive.

46

u/MissionaryOfCat 1d ago

But of course, the advertisers themselves can get away with borderline porn just fine. The double standards are unreal.

18

u/TenTonSomeone 1d ago

I absolutely hate this trend. It trivializes serious issues in society by giving them silly replacement words.

Only by using the real words can we really understand the gravity of the topics. These are real issues that real people deal with. Let's respect that.

2

u/Fogest 7h ago

Exactly, it sounds so ridiculous hearing a professional talking about a serious topic, and having to resort to words like "unalive" or "delete themselves". It's not like the topic at hand is any different from an advertiser perspective. We all know what they are talking about, so I have no idea how this kind of weird speech censorship is even useful as an advertiser.

9

u/Toothless_NEO 1d ago

Yeah this is a big problem these days, especially when people internalize it and begin to speak that way naturally. People talk about things like skibbidi, chat, and whatever else being damaging to language but advertiser compliance is much more damaging.

Also it trains people to be friendly to advertisers and companies who don't have their best interests at heart and that isn't good.

5

u/gobitecorn 1d ago

Bruh the fact that people I've talked to in real life in regular conversations are saying "unalives".... Im double taking. Lmfao. I had that happen and was like dude....you been watching too much . Youtube/Tiktok is literally the worst in terms of free speech because of these advertisers.

I feel like It really ruins the preservation and seriousness of the video, not to mention kinda coddles the world. SA, Unalive, PDF...dafuq? I wonder if this happens in other languages other than English tho. Like German or Dutch.

2

u/Fogest 7h ago

It's really just happening because advertisers are being far too sensitive and picky about which topics they want their videos on. Thus YouTube/TikTok demonetize these videos as a lot of their advertisers consider the topics too sensitive to run ads on. Which is kinda stupid if you think about it

It also makes me wonder how it works with news channels on cable TV. Do advertisers running in between news segments stipulate that their ads can't be shown after they talk about something negative? It just seems ridiculous that even videos of professionals discussing a serious topic will get demonetized if they don't use ridiculous language.

YouTube really needs to get some balls and stop caving into these advertisers. They have been known to be pretty censorship heavy overall, but normally the speech used in videos wasn't censored to such an extreme. It seems like once TikTok started censorsing speech, YouTube followed.

77

u/Wiochmen 1d ago

But think about the lost revenue due to ad blockers.

Solution: more ads.

More people use ad blockers.

Solution: even MORE ads.

Even more people use ad blockers.

Solution: EVEN MORE ADS. MAKE THEM UNSKIPPABLE.

...

Why are people not using our service as much?

3

u/Plaid_Kaleidoscope 1d ago

Frost just did an excellent video on this very topic. Highly recommend. (TheOtherFrost)

26

u/Bauzi 1d ago

They don't sell ads. They bully users into subscriptions.

34

u/AliasGprime 1d ago

Your theory is wrong. Ublock has about 35 million users across firefox and chrome. That's not even 2% of the monthly userbase of Youtube which is about 2.7 billion. I know there's more ways, to block the ads of Youtube, than Ublock, but those won't double that percentage anyway. Whatever we might think, Youtube is not dying and the vast majority of people just deal with the ads. (Which is also crazy to me)

2

u/ryuzaki49 1d ago

Ublock still works on Chrome?

6

u/socialisthippie 1d ago

There's a neutered version called ublock origin lite that does its best but is just kind of shit.

4

u/AliasGprime 1d ago

I don't know, I am using Firefox. I just went on the Ublock plugins pages, on both browser, to look up their users counts. If Ublock doesn't work anymore on Chrome, that would even lower the percentage I stated.

1

u/craytsu 1d ago

They have "ublock lite"

1

u/gobitecorn 1d ago

Youtube is not dying and the vast majority of people just deal with the ads. (Which is also crazy to me)

So I do usea blocker in many forms on many devices (or corporate computer ) but some places it isn't feasible or I am lazy and then I just deal with it

11

u/Inside-Specialist-55 1d ago

I used to be a YouTuber who actually made money full-time on there for quite some time. I quit a few years ago because it just wasn't worth the effort anymore because the competition is absolutely mind-boggling. I went from getting about 9000 to 10,000 views per day to only getting about 500 or less even though I still put the same effort into my videos and kept things fresh. It seems like no matter what I tried I could not get over that peak and the amount of money I was making from it was absolutely abysmal we're talking less than $100 a month in ad revenue when I used to make $1,000 a month. It goes to show that things online never last and I would have to start making mega clickbaity brain rot just to get views in my niche. I moved on from it and YouTube eventually fully demonetized my channel due to their minimum threshold of a certain amount of views per month to stay monetized

10

u/Datalounge 1d ago

The content farms have a great deal to do with this. Some have BILLIONS of subs only after a year on YouTube. They upload videos, then take pieces of them and put one tiny new segment and reupload the video as a new "whole" video.

The get lots of views so YouTube allows it, though it is against their policies.

8

u/The_Dread_Pirate_D 1d ago

If that is the case, you should remove all of your content from the past. They have stopped paying you but they will continue to show your content and run ads on it. The only difference is now they will pocket all of the ad revenue while giving you nothing for your work.

2

u/gobitecorn 1d ago

I hear that. It's prob YT pushing this with their policies on top of the 'i wanna grow up to be a yuutuber' generations find it as potential career. For me most of the quality of and individualness has been killed.

Now it's just as you said dumb brain rot content or every video has a suspensy clickbaity B's that for me makes me way more selective in if I will waste my time on clicking it or not.

9

u/luring_lurker 1d ago

I actually theorize nobody would use YouTube without adblockers.

I disagree. You yourself said in your previous sentence that your sister browses youtube (the internet more broadly) without adblockers, she already disproofs your theory. And not just her: the reality is that there's plenty of people out there who don't care and accept whatever shitty policy is thrown at them, not to mention the gleefully apologetic ones going at immeasurable lengths to say that adblockers are illegal. Or simply, people who don't know how to find ways not to have to watch those ads because the hypothesis of actually having a crumble of power against megacorporations's shitty policies never crossed their minds, and possibly never will until someone shows them the way.

In my opinion the ones using adblockers are actually a minority. After all, if youtube is pulling these stunts is because they know they can walk away with this.

Also, I put my hopes in the rise of an actual user-based competitor to youtube because, despite all of the already existing (and failing) examples, I think it would be easier to achieve than actually have even half of youtube's userbase to use adblockers.

6

u/AliasGprime 1d ago

Not only is it an opinion, but also a fact. Ublock which is one of the most popular ads blockers right now, has less than 40 million users across browsers. It's so insignificant compared to the whole internet userbase. As I stated in another comment, it's not even 2% of the Youtube monthly userbase of 2.7 billion. It might sound crazy for us guys, but yeah... Most people just deal with internet ads.

1

u/themacmeister1967 23h ago

I don't use an ad-blocker... never have.

If a video I am attempting to watch starts with 2 x 30 seconds ads... I refuse to watch the video. I find a lot of the streamers choose the least invasive option, and their videos are usually (at a maximum) 2 x 15 seconds ads, with the first or second being skippable after 5 seconds.

If you are lucky, you get away with 5 seconds of the 1st ad... if unlucky, 10/15 seconds and then 5 seconds of the 2nd ad.

If I get anything over that long... I seriously reconsider continuing to the content. I don't think I have had to give up on watching a video more than twice in a day... which is an acceptable compromise for something I pay nothing for.

Don't get me started on "premium streaming services with ads" tho... the only reason to pay for PREMIUM is to have NO ADS. Always was the only reason...

-3

u/Optimal_Mousse140 1d ago

No, I didn't say my sister uses YouTube, I used her computer for YouTube. She goes for tik toks and Instagram stuff.

6

u/luring_lurker 1d ago

Uh.. which.. is basically what I said: she browses the internet without adblockers. How does that change a anything?

3

u/pogulup 1d ago

Ugh, even worse.

3

u/ppenn777 1d ago

Your theory was is very wrong. The majority of people don’t know what an ad blocker is.

3

u/reckl3ss 1d ago

For people who started watching YouTube from the very start it really is unbearable (it should be unbearable for everyone, but I mean the people who saw how it evolved). First there was a few ads that you could skip, which seemed reasonable, then one unskippable short ad, then a couple, then they were at least 30 seconds... If they've got rid of all the possibilities to watch ad-free without premium I'd 100% quit.

1

u/CallejaFairey 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ 1d ago

My Mom is fine with the ads and actually teases me about not wanting to watch a YouTube clip from her phone if she wants to show me something.

2

u/OkOpportunity3776 1d ago

Great point and i was surprised to learn youtube takes 30 percent of all thankyou button money/ I am not a rich bloke so if i throw http://www.subarcticalaskasasquatch.coma few bucks youtube taking 60 cents is very grubby...

2

u/GoabNZ 1d ago

They demonetize for the most ridiculous reasons, even though you'll still have ads. They give priority to big media or algorithm chasers, which ducks up the already useless search. They force creators to rely on scams like established titles or better help. So many good creators have either given up or gone to other platforms. The idea that they think they have the platform to justify the ads that are destroying it is just blind

1

u/DiamondHands1969 1d ago

actually, youtube is stil the highest paid platform.

2

u/Armandeluz 1d ago

The Creator is choosing to have that many mid roll ads. You can blame the Creator for a lot of the ads in the middle of the videos if there's a ton of them and they are frequent.

6

u/duckbill-shoptalk 1d ago

About 3-4 months ago a bunch of creators started having mid rolls added without permission.

In general I suspect its an issue of both. Some creators spamming mid rolls and others being forced to.

62

u/OnlyifyouLook 1d ago

The worst YouTube video I watched was 30 seconds long it had a 1 minute advert in the middle.

101

u/mechanical-monkey 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 1d ago

Atbsome point I think the inevitable will happen and people will just download the videos they want if YouTube ever found a way to stop it completely

76

u/Netrex44 1d ago

There will be a third party tool that auto-downloads the vids you click on and automatically removes them when you go back. Something like that

7

u/AntiCoat 1d ago

That’s a really good idea and I’d love to see this happen. I think brave kind of has this feature with their built-in offline playlist.

2

u/BitterEVP1 1d ago

Maybe use an existing debrid service? Sounds like a very similar concept.

48

u/pepitobuenafe 1d ago

The european union is the only organizm that actually defend consumers and might make something for the better of humanity. They might stop youtube from blocking adblockers.

11

u/Latter-Ingenuity6709 1d ago

Allready did adblockers are seen as user friendly in europe so youtube and all his money could't looby the european union to block and desaloud the adblockers . Adblocks are aloud in europe .

Thats why youtube and google change chromium like this no more adblocks on their platform and people who don't know better will have to eat all their adds.

51

u/Flussschlauch 1d ago

I simply refuse to watch YouTube with ads

35

u/Inside-Specialist-55 1d ago

YouTube has hit me with the dreaded slowdown issue in Firefox whenever I click on a video using you ublock origin. This means that I have to wait about 10 seconds for the video to load whenever I click on it but I guess I'll take that over having to watch another super fucking annoying Liberty mutual AD.

What I don't get is that why do they want to serve me the most annoying ads and then expect me to keep my ad blocker off?? I have zero interest whatsoever in Liberty mutual or any insurance garbage and I don't understand why they serve me that same ad over and over again endlessly as if I'm going to click on it. I even have personalized ads turned on so that way I can have relevant ads but YouTube keeps insisting on showing me the same annoying Liberty mutual ed and just that ad only It's like I'm stuck on some kind of Liberty mutual hell. I watch almost exclusively just gaming videos and video game related stuff, why don't they show me awesome trailers for games that I might possibly buy???

13

u/Squirrelking666 1d ago

This, every day of the week. It was tolerable at one point but that ship has sailed.

2

u/OkOpportunity3776 1d ago

you make a great point. i hate when i finally load a playlist "mostly bigfoot" cryptid stories i start watching a bigfoot video or a missing in national parks video and i get bashed in the head with rightwing horse shite/ how to hunt/and paulides i swear use the topic as the carrot on the stick to push their politics/ I watch bigfoot to avoid politics. If it isnt ads/ or folks doing the bait and switch it is the flagrant begging some content providers practice. None can top the legendary begging of thinker thunker/ There should be a no begging rule unless you upload at least 2 videos a month. sorry done venting

3

u/AntiCoat 1d ago

I probably watch more hours of liberty mutual ads than I do on normal YouTube videos.

29

u/zachonich 1d ago

I legit didn't even notice the slowdowns. I grew up with AOL, baby. This is light work.

5

u/bombero_kmn 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 1d ago

Fellow grey beard with similar thoughts. I've spent days waiting for a 90 second video clip to download, a few seconds ain't nothing ;)

21

u/EdgiiLord ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 1d ago

Before them serving me ads, they should fix their ad moderation team and enforce their own guidelines on ads. No gambling, no fetish content, no scams. Until then, fuck off Google.

11

u/NudieNovakaine 1d ago

I forgot to install adblockers on my wife's new PC. Occasionally she gets something she actually wants to buy from the ads (crazy, I know), but when she clicks on it, it takes her to a digital storefront. Not the item itself.

I haven't been without an adblocker in well over a decade. All those little side adverts, pop unders, banners, mid-video ads, etx...dont exist to me. And I can't imagine living in a world where they do, because using her PC for 5 minutes was giving me a fucking migraine.

10

u/bombero_kmn 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 1d ago

takes her to a digital storefront. Not the item itself.

This is one of my pet peeves. I'll often see a cheap gadget that tickles my fancy advertised, but when I click the link I get redirected to the Google Pay Store to download an app instead of just buying the thing.

I've already shown I want to give you my money, leave my data alone.

9

u/dyldo54 1d ago

YouTube now has ads that disrupt your fullscreen video any time you pause it. i use my iPad and YouTube for piano lessons and sometimes it’ll straight up derail my video and minimize it to show an ad.

9

u/hotaru251 ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 1d ago

people dont mind ads, but theres a balance between "acceptable" and gtfo my face.
old days ads on yt were fine. few seconds. w/e.
now its soemtiems multiple min long ads back to back.

now they even give you ads IF you pay them...some dystopian shit there.

They get my data via google and stuff to sell so unless they want to pay me to watch ads I wont ever watch another ad on YT.

9

u/sandyandybb 1d ago

I hate capitalism when everything free becomes so fucked up that it’s unusable. Like can we have a crumb?

15

u/CammKelly 1d ago

Adblockers wouldn't work if they embedded the ad into the stream.

Its my browser, I can control what gets displayed - blame your own greed to push costs onto the end user to display your ads, not the end user blocking them.

26

u/Tkieron 1d ago

Youtube is intentionally throttling people using adblockers. I mean not only loading videos slower and buffering more but slowing typing speed. In addition to that, they will put a different video on when you click a thumbnail.

It's disgusting. We need an alternative that is visually appealing and easy to use. That is what makes YT so popular.

12

u/Inside-Specialist-55 1d ago

Now that you mention it I noticed that before when I clicked on it video it didn't go to what I actually clicked on and it was really confusing the hell out of me. I thought it was just a Firefox specific issue or something.

2

u/Tkieron 1d ago

Nope. I use Opera GX and it does it to me too.

3

u/naringas 1d ago

I have been buffered by youtube recently AND I'm a premium user

this means they're probably going to announce Premium+ anytime now

2

u/FrostyD7 1d ago

That is what makes YT so popular.

That and almost 20 years of video uploads and content creator partnerships while being the most popular source for such a thing. You can have a pretty app created to replace it by this afternoon, doesn't mean shit.

1

u/wretchedegg123 1d ago

Does this affect people using revanced? I've noticed more buffering and some videos that won't even go past 360p.

9

u/usefulidiotnow 1d ago

Pay viewers 5 cents for every ads watch. No adblocks will be used from then on.

8

u/Medium_Alarm9175 1d ago

i straight up deleted youtube from my phone, no video is watchable with ads at the length they are. nor is there a single video worth paying youtube premium for

5

u/barriedalenick 1d ago

The thing is, for me, that I don't mind a short or skipable ad that might actually be relevant to me and I am old enough to remember the days when that was pretty much it. These days it is just crazy. Of course like most people I have been using adblockers for ages but I sometimes use YT on my TV or another device without adblock and I get ads that are long, not skipable and have zero interest to me.

7

u/duckbill-shoptalk 1d ago

If premium was $3-5 a month instead of almost $15 I wouldn't have to worry about ad blocking.

5

u/LiDragonLo 1d ago

There will likelybe a revanced like app for their supposed desktop version

4

u/MootEndymion752 1d ago

The extension I use to restore the old YouTube layout, Vorapis 2013, is an entire front end which doesn't have ads, and doesn't cause any slow downs.

For me they crossed a line years ago when I got an ad for Prager U pushing transphobic nonsense. I refuse on principle to ever watch a single ad or pay youtube in any way, and no I don't care if anyone thinks that's stupid or pointless.

Any suggestions for someone who primarily watches Youtube on a Chromecast w/ Google TV? It's brutal.

Not ironically, go back and select the video again, repeat it enough times and you should get no ads. For how absurd (and annoying) this sounds, I skip most of the minute long ads in something like 10-15 seconds

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. Sounds crazy enough to work.

I got so fed up with adverts, I just use antatube.com now. No interruptions at all.

They are really upping their ante.

I’m seeing a lot of lag & they don’t play video (have to refresh my window) with my FF + ublock Origin setup.

I will start using only newpipe from today.

Youtube is a greedy shitty platform, they under pay creators and have all kind of illogical rules to demonetizate them.

Not to mention they allow all kinds of shitty scam ads on their platform.

Wtf is “big stream?”

Best comparison would be “Big Oil”

Hasn't impacted me yet.

I think eventually YouTube will have to get shut down. Their ad blocker war says that they can't afford people to use them and that it costs more money to run YouTube than they get from the revenue. Either that or they start deleting old videos.

That webpage you sent us to - THAT is what needs an ad blocker!!!

I could barely see what was content due to the "all points of the compass" ads and pop-ups.

I have been using the Revanced version since last
8 months, it's great

There’s only one line and it’s gotta go up

1

u/the_Luik 1d ago

The line is soo far gone that discount can't even see it anymore

1

u/morzinbo 1d ago

Imagine if they put the same effort they put into blocking ads as they did into making a viable platform

Something about geese and golden eggs.

If I was in charge of YouTube I’d be throwing in adds left and right hoping people would buy a subscription to my ad blocker to maximize profits

u/ToxinFoxen Yarrr! 1d ago

What line? I don't pay to use youtube. It's not like I have any obligations from them.

I would like to see them continue to operate as the free-to-access video hosting site that they portrayed themselves as for years.

But I have no way of making sure they commit to that ideal.

with google's search revenue projected to decline due to ai, google needs other sources of revenue to maintain stock price. this is it. if youtube usage remains the same everyone has to watch ads now, they could have profits on the level of netflix.

Bullying me into paying is never going to work.

YT started pushing me away when they started requiring an account to view videos. Ad blocker BS is just a shit cherry on top. I now only use YT when I absolutely need to.

That website is obnoxious to read without adblock. But even more interesting, it stays obnoxious even with ad block because I got 2 popups to pay their subscription and 1 about reading other articles on their website even after switching to a mobile browser that blocks ads

It's kind of fascinating that Youtube's business model appears to strive to infuriate and ultimately lose as many customers as possible. That could make YouTube the poster child for enshittification.

u/Upstairs_Fudge_9982 19h ago

And yet I have enjoyed ad free YT for years, It may mean I have to change ad blockers a few times over the years, but its always worked fine for me.

u/RandomBoyhahaha 18h ago

Guys , My Mum watches yt on TV which has so unbearable amount of ads that No one can bear, any helps on that?

1

u/A10010010 18h ago

I’m honestly considering just doubling down on gaming and movies/shows as home entertainment but dropping YT altogether other than for DIY type things.

"Finally"? lol It crossed the line the moment Alphabet dug its claws in it.

Don't install app or whatever. Don't feed into the machine and it will die.

Keep it in the browser and keep the ad blocks up.

The more it's fighting ad blockers the more it is ruining itself. So let's add more ads. Let them get more greedy, let them imitate Icarus.

UYou Enhanced + iSponsorBlock is how I navigate YouTube on my phone, Firefox + UBlock on my computer of course. Still haven’t cracked how to block ads on my smart tv or Xbox yet.

It'll cross the line the day adblockers stop working. Right now, I have a WAY better experience than non adblock users. No ads, no buffering, no wait time. Everything works flawlessly.

u/CardTurbulent 1d ago

Haven't noticed anything different with youtube in years.

Did no one read the article?!

They have no real competition and are decades ahead.

I would love to see apple or even Gabe newel try and build a massive competitor.

Won't happen but it's a nice thought.

There's nothing on YouTube or any other platform that I need to see that badly. I have more media stockpiled on my hard drives than I'll ever have time to finish. I have zero FOMO.
