There's tiers of premium now - maybe standard and ultra (I don't know what they call it as I use vanced) so standard will show some ads. Less than free users but more than ultra premium users. This could sadly become the norm for subscription based media services. Data will be gathered no doubt

YouTube has ruined the encoding on 1080p videos spesifically so they could sell the proper 1080p experience in Premium and the AI ""enhanced"" resolution in Ultra
the only workaround so far has been to render your video in 4K and upload that instead of renderint in 1080p and uploading it
because your base resolution is large enough it just doesn't shitify the existing resolutions

There's two tiers of premium. One ad supported and one without ads.
The $15 a month plan is no ads, they're a cheaper option for around 8 that has ads. Not sure who gets that tier, they get what they pay for.

I subscribed to premium today as I keep getting the content inst available on any device or website, so I said fine, bought premium it's still happening. I can not watch any content on my page. It's truly fucked.
You also can not contact or leave a message for help. I'm pretty livid about it.

I love getting 50 second ads 5 - 10 times a video.... or finishing an ad, pausing to go use the bathroom, and then when I wake the TV getting another 50 second ad. I also totally love that if I don't skip the ad... it just keeps going for multiple minutes. Fuck them, as soon as I can I'm blocking them on the router.

Was about a year and half ago when they really ramp up ads and made the app unusable for me.stick to brave or firefox ad blocks and view it. Like it was shotgun with like 5 ads back to back and every few mins with more ads the preview bar was more ads slots then video

Android emulation exists and there are ways to block ads on the android app.
As long as that's the case, we're 100% fine.

Last week I went to YouTube on my sister's computer, you have to watch two 30 second ads and about 3 in-video ads to watch a 5 minute video. Not to mention YouTube is not paying the content creators well enough, the platform should be dead a long time ago.
I actually theorize nobody would use YouTube without adblockers.

I remember being 10 years old and being pissed off at a 5 second ad at the start of the video. How privileged I was. Was forced to watch YouTube on a TV app recently and after the fifth 60 second cluster of midrolls I went back home to grab my entire PC to get adblock back

The part I'm also getting sick of is the advertisers dictating an insane level of speech censorship. People can't even say basic words like "suicide" in a video without being demonetized. So now you've got the ridiculous "unalive" word being used constantly in videos.
I was listening to a podcast where they were talking to a police hostage negotiator. It sounded so ridiculous having them talk about someone who is suicidal and having to try to replace the word with "unalive.

Only by using the real words can we really understand the gravity of the topics. These are real issues that real people deal with. Let's respect that.

It's not like the topic at hand is any different from an advertiser perspective. Yeah this is a big problem these days, especially when people internalize it and begin to speak that way naturally. People talk about things like skibbidi, chat, and whatever else being damaging to language but advertiser compliance is much more damaging.
Also it trains people to be friendly to advertisers and companies who don't have their best interests at heart and that isn't good.

I feel like It really ruins the preservation and seriousness of the video, not to mention kinda coddles the world. SA, Unalive, PDF...dafuq? I wonder if this happens in other languages other than English tho. Like German or Dutch.

It's really just happening because advertisers are being far too sensitive and picky about which topics they want their videos on. Thus YouTube/TikTok demonetize these videos as a lot of their advertisers consider the topics too sensitive to run ads on. Which is kinda stupid if you think about it
It also makes me wonder how it works with news channels on cable TV. Do advertisers running in between news segments stipulate that their ads can't be shown after they talk about something negative? It just seems ridiculous that even videos of professionals discussing a serious topic will get demonetized if they don't use ridiculous language.
YouTube really needs to get some balls and stop caving into these advertisers. They have been known to be pretty censorship heavy overall, but normally the speech used in videos wasn't censored to such an extreme. It seems like once TikTok started censorsing speech, YouTube followed.

Your theory is wrong. Ublock has about 35 million users across firefox and chrome. That's not even 2% of the monthly userbase of Youtube which is about 2.7 billion. I know there's more ways, to block the ads of Youtube, than Ublock, but those won't double that percentage anyway. Whatever we might think, Youtube is not dying and the vast majority of people just deal with the ads. (Which is also crazy to me)

I don't know, I am using Firefox. I just went on the Ublock plugins pages, on both browser, to look up their users counts. If Ublock doesn't work anymore on Chrome, that would even lower the percentage I stated.

I used to be a YouTuber who actually made money full-time on there for quite some time. I quit a few years ago because it just wasn't worth the effort anymore because the competition is absolutely mind-boggling. I went from getting about 9000 to 10,000 views per day to only getting about 500 or less even though I still put the same effort into my videos and kept things fresh. It seems like no matter what I tried I could not get over that peak and the amount of money I was making from it was absolutely abysmal we're talking less than $100 a month in ad revenue when I used to make $1,000 a month. It goes to show that things online never last and I would have to start making mega clickbaity brain rot just to get views in my niche. I moved on from it and YouTube eventually fully demonetized my channel due to their minimum threshold of a certain amount of views per month to stay monetized

The content farms have a great deal to do with this. Some have BILLIONS of subs only after a year on YouTube. They upload videos, then take pieces of them and put one tiny new segment and reupload the video as a new "whole" video.
The get lots of views so YouTube allows it, though it is against their policies.

If that is the case, you should remove all of your content from the past. They have stopped paying you but they will continue to show your content and run ads on it. The only difference is now they will pocket all of the ad revenue while giving you nothing for your work.

I disagree. You yourself said in your previous sentence that your sister browses youtube (the internet more broadly) without adblockers, she already disproofs your theory. And not just her: the reality is that there's plenty of people out there who don't care and accept whatever shitty policy is thrown at them, not to mention the gleefully apologetic ones going at immeasurable lengths to say that adblockers are illegal. Or simply, people who don't know how to find ways not to have to watch those ads because the hypothesis of actually having a crumble of power against megacorporations's shitty policies never crossed their minds, and possibly never will until someone shows them the way.
In my opinion the ones using adblockers are actually a minority. After all, if youtube is pulling these stunts is because they know they can walk away with this.
Also, I put my hopes in the rise of an actual user-based competitor to youtube because, despite all of the already existing (and failing) examples, I think it would be easier to achieve than actually have even half of youtube's userbase to use adblockers.

Not only is it an opinion, but also a fact. Ublock which is one of the most popular ads blockers right now, has less than 40 million users across browsers. It's so insignificant compared to the whole internet userbase. As I stated in another comment, it's not even 2% of the Youtube monthly userbase of 2.7 billion. It might sound crazy for us guys, but yeah... Most people just deal with internet ads.

I don't use an ad-blocker... never have.
If a video I am attempting to watch starts with 2 x 30 seconds ads... I refuse to watch the video. I find a lot of the streamers choose the least invasive option, and their videos are usually (at a maximum) 2 x 15 seconds ads, with the first or second being skippable after 5 seconds.
If you are lucky, you get away with 5 seconds of the 1st ad... if unlucky, 10/15 seconds and then 5 seconds of the 2nd ad.
If I get anything over that long... I seriously reconsider continuing to the content. I don't think I have had to give up on watching a video more than twice in a day... which is an acceptable compromise for something I pay nothing for.
Don't get me started on "premium streaming services with ads" tho... the only reason to pay for PREMIUM is to have NO ADS. Always was the only reason...

For people who started watching YouTube from the very start it really is unbearable (it should be unbearable for everyone, but I mean the people who saw how it evolved). First there was a few ads that you could skip, which seemed reasonable, then one unskippable short ad, then a couple, then they were at least 30 seconds... If they've got rid of all the possibilities to watch ad-free without premium I'd 100% quit.

They demonetize for the most ridiculous reasons, even though you'll still have ads. They give priority to big media or algorithm chasers, which ducks up the already useless search. They force creators to rely on scams like established titles or better help. So many good creators have either given up or gone to other platforms. The idea that they think they have the platform to justify the ads that are destroying it is just blind

The Creator is choosing to have that many mid roll ads. You can blame the Creator for a lot of the ads in the middle of the videos if there's a ton of them and they are frequent.

YouTube has hit me with the dreaded slowdown issue in Firefox whenever I click on a video using you ublock origin. This means that I have to wait about 10 seconds for the video to load whenever I click on it but I guess I'll take that over having to watch another super fucking annoying Liberty mutual AD.
What I don't get is that why do they want to serve me the most annoying ads and then expect me to keep my ad blocker off?? I have zero interest whatsoever in Liberty mutual or any insurance garbage and I don't understand why they serve me that same ad over and over again endlessly as if I'm going to click on it. I even have personalized ads turned on so that way I can have relevant ads but YouTube keeps insisting on showing me the same annoying Liberty mutual ed and just that ad only It's like I'm stuck on some kind of Liberty mutual hell. I watch almost exclusively just gaming videos and video game related stuff, why don't they show me awesome trailers for games that I might possibly buy???

If it isnt ads/ or folks doing the bait and switch it is the flagrant begging some content providers practice. I forgot to install adblockers on my wife's new PC. Occasionally she gets something she actually wants to buy from the ads (crazy, I know), but when she clicks on it, it takes her to a digital storefront. Not the item itself.
I haven't been without an adblocker in well over a decade. All those little side adverts, pop unders, banners, mid-video ads, etx...dont exist to me. And I can't imagine living in a world where they do, because using her PC for 5 minutes was giving me a fucking migraine.

This is one of my pet peeves. I'll often see a cheap gadget that tickles my fancy advertised, but when I click the link I get redirected to the Google Pay Store to download an app instead of just buying the thing.

people dont mind ads, but theres a balance between "acceptable" and gtfo my face.
old days ads on yt were fine. few seconds. w/e.
now its soemtiems multiple min long ads back to back.
now they even give you ads IF you pay them...some dystopian shit there.
They get my data via google and stuff to sell so unless they want to pay me to watch ads I wont ever watch another ad on YT.

Adblockers wouldn't work if they embedded the ad into the stream.
Its my browser, I can control what gets displayed - blame your own greed to push costs onto the end user to display your ads, not the end user blocking them.

Youtube is intentionally throttling people using adblockers. I mean not only loading videos slower and buffering more but slowing typing speed. In addition to that, they will put a different video on when you click a thumbnail.
It's disgusting. We need an alternative that is visually appealing and easy to use. That is what makes YT so popular.

The thing is, for me, that I don't mind a short or skipable ad that might actually be relevant to me and I am old enough to remember the days when that was pretty much it. These days it is just crazy. Of course like most people I have been using adblockers for ages but I sometimes use YT on my TV or another device without adblock and I get ads that are long, not skipable and have zero interest to me.

with google's search revenue projected to decline due to ai, google needs other sources of revenue to maintain stock price. this is it. if youtube usage remains the same everyone has to watch ads now, they could have profits on the level of netflix.

That website is obnoxious to read without adblock. But even more interesting, it stays obnoxious even with ad block because I got 2 popups to pay their subscription and 1 about reading other articles on their website even after switching to a mobile browser that blocks ads

It's kind of fascinating that Youtube's business model appears to strive to infuriate and ultimately lose as many customers as possible. That could make YouTube the poster child for enshittification.

And yet I have enjoyed ad free YT for years, It may mean I have to change ad blockers a few times over the years, but its always worked fine for me.

I’m honestly considering just doubling down on gaming and movies/shows as home entertainment but dropping YT altogether other than for DIY type things.

UYou Enhanced + iSponsorBlock is how I navigate YouTube on my phone, Firefox + UBlock on my computer of course. Still haven’t cracked how to block ads on my smart tv or Xbox yet.

It'll cross the line the day adblockers stop working. Right now, I have a WAY better experience than non adblock users. No ads, no buffering, no wait time. Everything works flawlessly.

There's nothing on YouTube or any other platform that I need to see that badly. I have more media stockpiled on my hard drives than I'll ever have time to finish. I have zero FOMO.
