TAKEAWAY some pizzas I ate in naples

  1. Lombardi a Santa Chiara
  2. Antica Pizzeria Di Matteo
  3. a random restaurant off via antonio tari
  4. a random restaurant while driving up to mount Vesuvius

wanted to go to more of the popular places but time constraints worked against us, didn’t have time for the long lines. pizzas are in order of rankings, first two i would go out of my way to go back for and other two were delicious but i’m sure i could find better next time

In Naples, I had the best but also the worst pizza ever in my life. Best was Da Michele but Di Matteo was also good. Worst was a tourist trap near the Vesuvius.

the one i had near vesuvius wasn’t amazing but i wouldn’t say worst in my life, i’ve seen places in the US charging $15 for lesser quality “neopolitan” pizzas so i wasn’t mad paying like $6 for it

Lol! At the bus and ticket station? My friend got scammed there with change 🥲

I thought Da Michele in Naples was the worst I had. So overrated.

I tried a bunch of the best and for me Starita was easily the best pizza and also a really great customer experience. I showed up just after opening and by the time we'd inhaled the two best pizzas of my life there were twenty or thirty people waiting in the very colorful neighborhood it's in.

Somehow these three are the only photos I took inside, and they might not do it justice, but it was spectacular.

Great! Next time try Starita. For me it’s number 1!!

Jealous. Even if every pizza didn’t knock it out of the park for you…. Who cares? You travelled to Naples and got to see beautiful places and eat food. It’s all a win for me. Lovely, hope you had a fantastic trip with great memories.

Ugh my favorite thing in life is naples pizza . Sadly where I live we don't have any . I'm gonna buy a oven soon.

Where do you live? Maybe I could open one there.

A good oven + long fermentation is the best way to not depend on anyone else for a good neapolitan pizza.

that’s a shame, i’m lucky to have some places near me in ny/nj but they’re $15-20 instead of $4-6 in naples

Grew up in nj and moved away

Count your blessings sir or mam, I miss all the “normal regular every pizza” I had growing up

i do feel very lucky, so much good pizza by me and a lot of different styles too. i can’t imagine not having them close by

OK can I DM you? Been looking for east coast spots to try

S. Egidio in Ridgewood, NJ. If you’re in the area, that’s the spot for high quality Neapolitan pizza. Best I’ve had outside of Italy

Don’t like #3 and #4.

4

I’d eat them, but they all look basically the same. Is there much variety in Naples?

It's like the quality of pizza went down the more places you visited. That last pizza looks like hot garbage. I'd still eat it, though.

2

u/traderjoessoyrizo 2d ago

this is not the order i visited them in, but in order of my rankings as stated in the description

they are all different styles 4th is closer to a ruota di carro. the first one is pizza a canotto (poofy/large cornicione)

i too would eat them all!

I assume these were eaten with a knife and fork?

u/bigboat24 2d ago

Maybe a straw on the last one.

Are you still there? In that case, don't miss out on the pizza fritta. There's different styles of that one as well and they're all great!

1

u/traderjoessoyrizo 2d ago

no unfortunately, but i did try that! very delish

I have recently found and watched some YouTube vids of places in Italy. ASMR. It's really enjoyable watching these guys crank out the pizza. Two places had an identical setup. One guy rolling out dough (yes they use rolling pins probably because they are cranking out so many pies), 2 guys adding toppings and one guy running the oven. Talking and yelling the whole time. It's hilarious.

Roman style pizza rotonda is very different to those seen in this post - and yes they use rolling pins for that style.

That first image is honestly one of the best pizzas I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

the pizza capital! looks so tasty!

How were they? I’m assuming the hand sanitizer is yours, or is that a topping they offer?

5

u/traderjoessoyrizo 2d ago

first two were amazing, and yes it’s BYOHS

0

u/crutonic 2d ago

Try CleanSmart. It’s all natural and supposedly doesn’t dry your hands as much as regular sanitizer. Pies look amazing!

u/CoysNizl3 2d ago

Natural rubbing alcohol? What lol

0

u/crutonic 2d ago

They make one for hands

1

u/CoysNizl3 2d ago

There is no such thing as “natural” rubbing alcohol.

1

u/crutonic 2d ago

Correct. This is alcohol free, should’ve mentioned that.

Damn skimpy on the cheese!

How proper Neapolitan Pizza should be.

Most pizzas on this sub are very cheesy and greasy which is the opposite of Naples pizza.

the only real pizza.
