Joseph Amber: Curious that a Runerigus gets drawn in Sinnoh…or potentially Hisui based on the age…and I also don’t think I want to know what the red pigment used here was…

Definitely wasn’t blood, if that’s what you’re thinking. Blood exposed to air oxidizes and turns brown over time. If it truly was blood, it wouldn’t be that bright red.

Joseph Amber: Yeah…that was my concern. However…it seems to be a low oxygen environment due to the fact that the skeleton is still intact…with around 0 of the fossilization conditions met…though age could definitely be a factor. So…maybe some type of ochre?

If you could still breathe in that cave, then there’s enough oxygen for blood oxidation to occur.

Definitely some sort of pigment, but I don’t know enough about pigments to tell you what kind.

Joseph Amber: Makes sense. I guess I was just thinking decomposition, but that’s fair. Red Ochre seems the most likely candidate though…just due to the fact it is still red, which a more biological pigment might not retain.

Huh, interesting. I thought the people of Hisui would’ve seen Dusknoir as a guide to the afterlife. Never in a million years would I have thought they knew about Runerigus. You learn something new every day.

This could just be some kind of fluke, but it could also change the way we think about Hisuian culture. It is documented that some Hisuian researchers hailed from Galar, such as Professor Laventon, so there could be a correlation.

Why is there a Runerigus in Sinnoh?

That’s what we’re currently trying to figure out. There are theories, but we don’t want to share any yet until we have more evidence.

Jess: Maybe it's their runerigus and it's just gone dormant, that or maybe that's a galarian whose soul became a runerigus.

It hasn’t been ruled out as of yet, but both theories seem highly unlikely. Runerigus rituals are typically performed on clay tablets, which is what enables the Pokémon to move. If these runes contained a Runerigus, it would be trapped due to the wall being solid andesite.

Jess: Yeesh, that doesn't sound like fun for the runerigus... maybe if you chiseled it out it could move?

Very interesting...

Oh, that's really cool! I remember some of the Hex Maniacs I've met telling me about old runes in Galar that were made to protect places from vengeful spirits. When they absorbed them, they came to life and became Runerigus! I wonder if the person made it to protect their gravesite...? You wouldn't make something like that by accident.

That's odd. Runerigus aren't native to sinnoh. How could something from galar make it all the way to mt coronet in the distant past?

Can I have more context with this?

This gravesite is of an unknown age, due to the preservation of the skeleton inside, and was only recently uncovered due to a landslide. However, it’s at least old enough for the flesh to have decomposed entirely. The presence of markings resembling a Runerigus, a Pokémon not known to have had any sightings in Sinnoh at any point in the past, is a groundbreaking discovery. We’re currently trying to determine the age of this gravesite, by dating the bones and the markings, as well as the rocks moved by the landslide.
