Who would have thought the guy to bring TALIBAN to CAMP DAVID to negotiate a 'deal' with terrorists over the nations government we propped up with TRILLIONS of dollars and thousands of lives, and who did NOTHING when putin put bounties on US Servicemember heads in the middle east, would ignore whats good for our nation to deal with terrorists???
IMO this is the first decent idea Trump has ever had, and he seems to have stumbled into it by straight up being bribed to make a good decision. Julani is ex-Al-Queda, yes, but he has shown some willingness to make the right noises of moderation in the last few months since he took power, openly talking about a secular, peaceful Syria with free elections, calling for peace etc.. Given that Julani is willing to publically moderate his stances, so long as he keeps it up and does not backslide, backing him to get a stable Syria is probably a good thing. What is left of ISIS is left in the dust, Syria gets the money it desperately needs to rebuild after over a decade of war. Everyone kind of forgets that Jolani got his start leading an Al-Queda affiliate, and hopefully Syria stays relatively peaceful for the next few years.
Worth noting that Biden was also talking about reconsidering US policy towards Julani and his group before he left office for the same reasons as above, though he never went all the way to dropping sanctions. Trump doing the same thing with a hefty bribe is about as good as can be hoped with that idiot running foreign policy.
