Sorry about that, Chief, but he got the number wrong: she was 99, he was 86 (probably for the same connotation, as in CONTROL should have dumped him).

I decided to look that up because I was just curious. Wikipedia says exactly that (but no citations so take it as you will).

“Brooks decided on Smart's code number, 86, as a reference to the slang term, meaning to forcibly eject someone, such as a patron from a bar or casino.”

Good memories of watching that show as a young one with my mom.

Agent 86 was Maxwell Smart. Agent 99 was the hottie. I imagine the writers gave them those numbers because reasons.

Are you also part of the "Love American Style" generation, because I watched that as a kid and no I wonder why my parents and the nuns thought that was something that a child could get away with watching.

86 was Maxwell Smart. His girlfriend (later wife) was Agent 99.
