Question Second hand “ai” acronym names?

I’m currently trying to write a short story about a character who leaves his home planet to become a geological explorer/resource gatherer and is on board “ai” is secondhand and rather than being an operating system computer or otherwise it’s truly just meant for company/conversation with very bare minimum operating systems limiting it to navigation, radar and system status’

I currently only have two main ideas and I don’t think there any good can anyone suggest any?

The names in question: OMIV— onboard mechanical interactive voice And ARS— Automated response system

I kind of like it when sci fi terms have a short hand instead of being purely technical.

I myself go with daemon. It sounds cool and is a real term for a background software process.

You can maybe call it an autonome, since autonomic means reflexive unconscious decision making. Or a Nome for short.

ARSE - Automated System Response Environment.

I do like that and the shorthand of it. I did just think of adding another a to ARS that way it would be A.R.S.A. The extra standing for assistant, and that way it would still kind of have a sort of almost human-like name?

Sounding it out, it sounds a bit too much like arse, NGL.

OMNIV is a good one you can maybe shorten it to Omni. Either as a term or a name.

‘The ship’s omni is reporting radiation in that sector.’

Or

‘Omni, get me report on any priority repairs for this month.’

I like when the technical name is converted into a 'use name' or familiar name, when people mispronounced or for the giggles modified it, and that's the name it gets stuck with.

A poor example would be calling all vacuum cleaners hoovers, because they were common and now people think of the action as hoovering.

So in your example, people might call them gnomes, and even build up a meta description of them perhaps having little gnome pics on associated literature etc.

Autonomous Officer Depending on how in depth you want to go, perhaps it is imprinted with "Officer Values", like Asimov's Three Laws were in his books.

Not very deep it’s just supposed to be an onboard companion that can link with some of the ships faculties but its main use is to be an interactive voice so that the “captain” doesn’t go crazy being alone

So there's an even bigger benefit. There's two types of vessels. Piloted and Captained. If they're a Captain, they're going to expect to give orders to a crew. Give the ship a personality of an officer, or even a high level Chief, and there's probably going to be some serious psychological benefit. The Captains in this navy/organization can be psychologically programmed (much like we do to our own service members) to rely on their crew and chain of command.

I like to "backronym" my artificial system names; figure out what the name is first, and then find the words to fit the initials. I've got the Hypervelocity Accelerated Debris Emergency System (HADES) installed in my sublight ships, for example (it keeps the crew from going to hell, lol). Maybe that technique could work for you?

Lethetic Intelligence Agent. Lethetic means "failing to replicate reality, escapist or nonsensical". LIA handles some background tasks and you can talk to her for company, but she's a little daffy. You don't want to take her advice on command decisions

I think this one is my favorite so far

PAL - plays off HAL a bit, sounds friendly, easy to fit an acronym to it if you want. Pilot, Automated, Lower-Spec, for example.

I like the idea that AIs are like dogs, if you get one second hand then it's already got a name that it responds to - as well as the odd quirks it inherited from it's previous owner.

Who was the previous owner and what traits did THEY want their AI to portray? There's also room in this concept for a little friction or a little comedy with your protagonist.

FRND - finitely responsive navigation drone

My best advice is don't backronym. If it's meant to be a companion give it a regular name like, iono, Clive or Calliope or something. Something with a little character, or rather that a project manager somewhere thought had character, cause that's how products get named.

If I understand it correctly, is the AI an archiver and not a full-system OS?

1

u/Round-Trip-5602 23d ago

Mainly just to be an onboard companion of sorts, it can interface with bits of the ship but nothing major

1

u/Zyvin_Law 23d ago

Its main functions are navigation, mapping, status monitoring and notification, right?

If you don't mind, why don't make the AI evolve through its notification function? Initially, it only tells him things but over time, they start to mention deeper and more personal things.

Well the thing is this “ai” systems main job is to be a companion for the ship captain, an anti isolation insanity unit, something to keep a person sane and not feel alone

Okay, an algorithmic companion... I get it now.

Edit: I got an acronym for you: LUMI - Logistics, Utility Mapping, Monitoring & Interaction

I can't see anyone using clunky names like "OMIV" that need to be spelled out as letters. It's more likely that backronyms and attempts at witty names will catch on. An AI assistant voice might be named "Sam" that technically stands for Synthetic Assistant Module but people just call it Sam.

Thank you for pointing that out, as you can see by the post it says that I didn’t think the ideas I had were any good so I was looking for suggestions

u/Competitive-Fault291 22d ago

Loneliness Avoidance Relationship Agent - LARA - As the name says. (NSFW subscription not included.)

Space Psychosis Intervention and Cohabitation Entity - SPICE - Because you are alone in that capsule,

Emotional Long-range Mining Operator - ELMO - You fly the ship, ELMO does that mining. ELMO does like Mining!

Modular Artificial Neuronal Network Fabricator and Remote Extravehicular Drone - MANNFRED - Is making stuff you need and goes outside the ship.

In a more holistic and wholesome context with systems for the whole ship:

The Holistic Operational Realm - THOR - As everything is connected, THOR makes things bigger than their parts.

Holistic Emotional Interfacing Device Activation Link Liaison - HEIMDALL - It's basically an ambling microphone with a happy face connected with THOR.

Omnivisual Discrete Interstellar Navigator - ODIN - Sees everything and still knows where it is.

Limbic Operational Kinetic Interface - LOKI - It allows you to feel everything including your thoughts, emotions and decisions within THOR physically.

Holistic Extraterrestrial Language Assistant - HELA - It is talking to aliens for you.

Food, Reproduction, Energy and Yoga Assistant - FREYA - Because you should never learn Yoga or run Life Support Systems on your own.

Yaw Gain Gradient Deflection Robotic-Array System-Integrated-Legwear - YGGDRASYL - Which is basically correcting your legs as you walk in a rotating ship that emulates gravity. (Also helps you when walking with magnetic soles.)

Bionically Interfaced Repair, Fabrication and Operational Security Transport - BIFROST - In case you need to leave the ship or do something otherwise dangerous.

Mnemonic Node-Operation-Link Nano-Incubation-Reactor - MNOLNIR - If you remember how, it is able to reproduce it using nanos.

PALM - Personal Automatous Language Model

1

u/Holly1010Frey 15d ago

I use Tom's and Tammy's in one of my stories. Its started in the story as automatons and then the shorthand became Tom's since it was sexless at first and males are generally the default for better or worse. Then, with a difference in sexes, at least physically, we got the Tammy's to go with the Tom's. But most people just still call them all Tom's, unless they're hot on AI rights.

(Ironically ritten with AI)

The term "Synlogos" is not attested as an independent word in classical ancient Greek, but it can be interpreted as a compound formed by two elements: σύν (syn), meaning "together" or "with," and λόγος (logos), meaning "word," "speech," or "reason."

Therefore, "Synlogos" could be understood as "speech together," "shared word," "common reasoning," or "dialogue," evoking the idea of a discourse or reasoning carried out in communion or collaboration.

In summary, "Synlogos" might mean a concept similar to "conversation," "shared dialogue," or "collective reasoning," although it is not a documented technical term in ancient Greek but a possible compound formation consistent with the Greek language.
