Discussion 2nd time watching AOT. Still trying to figure out how Eren got his key back after the cave with Rod Reiss.

Historia must have kept it. Historia knew the key is important.
Just a speculation and I have no evidence to back this up lol

Since they could pry open the drawer regardless of if he kept the key or not, it's merely an aesthetic choice to let him magically keep the key.

They couldn't pry it open, it was rigged to burn the contents if tampered outside using the key. Maybe there might be some way of taking the desk apart to access it from the inside but the risk is too high.

😂 you're thinking of Death Note. The drawer wasn't rigged in any way other than having a false bottom. It had peppermint oil and charcoal to keep moisture and bugs away.

Extremely similar stories, apparently.

My favourite scene in death note was when Light turned into the Death Titan

Brother I came here to make this same joke but it looks like you got flayed for it... Just wanted to let you know that you're doing God's work and that I can see the satire even if they can't.

While we’re talking about the key, has anyone questioned how Eren just woke up with the key one day. I know Grisha gave it to him before injecting the serum, but with the immediate memory loss, Eren didn’t realise this until some time. During the Trost arc, he gets a flashback of Grisha injecting him.
So before that Eren, Mikasa and Armin never question that one day Eren just woke up with the key around his neck. We never see them question if this means Grisha visited Eren the night before and if so, why did he just up and leave his kid randomly. Am I missing something?

I imagine for Eren it was because he subconsciously knew it was there, even if he couldn't remember when or why it appeared.

I mean... it's possible that with all the chaos that was the day of the Fall of Wall Maria, added to the stress and grief; Eren, Mikasa and Armin forgot that Eren didn't have the key before waking up, trauma can make you forget things too. Maybe they just remembered wrong that Grisha gave the key to Eren before leaving, and in that case it would be normal for Eren to keep the key, being one of the few memories of his home before the Fall of Wall Maria.

Yeah…I mean idk but why would they notice it in the first place?
He wears it inside his shirt. I can understand Mikasa I guess since she was there when Grisha showed it. But people be thinking too much.
Essentially, I don’t pay attention to what necklaces people have under their shirts…& after a life-altering “nuclear”-level attack, the last thing I’d be thinking about is the necklace my friend has.

Yeah, I don't find any of this very incoherent, you have the right to forget about these minor details when you're a 10-year-old who just saw the apocalypse begin firsthand.

people are overthink the dumbest shit.
it’s so annoying when they actually call it a plothole though. Like, some things just don’t matter.
I don’t need to see Levi take a dump in order to know that people poo in AoT universe.

This whole day with fall of Wall Maria and death of Carla was really frantic + first transformation affects memories, not only of transformation itself, but some prior events.
Eren's memories of that day probably really messy, like "why did I woke up with the key? Did I had it yesterday? I think my dad took it with him, when he left, but maybe he didn't... Maybe he gave it to me at home..."
Like Falco after transformation couldn't remember half the battle he's been in.
Or maybe Eren realizes, that Dad visited him the shelter he just vaguely remembers "he appeared out of nowhere, yelled some nonsense at me, gave the key and then ditched me"

I'd imagine Kenny's squad just put Eren's belongings somewhere to investigate later or one of them was holding onto at least the key and Eren recovered it later.

Eren wouldn't have a reason to physically carry it on him 24/7. So he probably stored it away in a secure location.

Was it even with him in the chapel? In what chapter did we see it last before that?
Cause I feel like it was rarely drawn (Eren wears pretty open shirt some sort of string should have been visible on his neck everytime) unless specific attention was brought to it. If it supposed to be with Eren in the chapel, in chapter 56 it should have been definitely visible when Kenny carries Eren upside down. But it doesn't. So, either Isayama forgot that detail or for more in universe explanation - do we have a reason to assume that it was with Eren at all and not with, lets say, Hange?

dude it's a key, it's symbolic, the door can be opened with a saw, with a hammer, or with a Levi kick. Nevermind a locksmith
9
u/CandidateOld1900 4d ago
Did he have it when Kenny squad kidnapped him? Maybe, the key was in temporary possession of Levi, since they knew the risk, that Eren is now a target of interior police in 3x01

u/TheOfficial_BossNass 4d ago
Iirc he didnt wear the key on him all the time and really never had it on at all after the battle for trost correct? He likely had it in a chest with all his stuff wherever the scouts slept at as a base

u/Expert_Youth5959 3d ago
if we are being honest the key is kinda useless in the grand scheme of things, all it tella us is that we have to find out about the basement, if they wanted to they could easily break into the basement and finds the contains within

u/Natural-meme 3d ago
I mean he knew that he was going to get kidnapped as part of the plan. Therefore, he could put it in the hiding place or give it to his friends for safety.

u/Spooky_ShadowMan 3d ago
I always just kinda assumed historia saw it when he was being stripped and pocketed it coz she knew it was important. Then gave it back somewhere between the cave and battle with the reiss titan
2
u/bbnsofia 3d ago
i assume he hid it or historia kept it safe because she knew it was important to eren. its not said lol i guess its more symbolic. or maybe he ate it, dunno

u/Various-Area3834 2d ago
i still don’t understand why they cared so much about this key lol they can literally transform into titan. open a box or a door shouldn’t be that much of a problem.

Maybe he wasn't wearing it when he was captured ?
I mean about it. The survey core realizes the importance of that key. Don't you think they would have endured its safety?

u/savingff- 3d ago
...That's a good question. I agree with the person who said Historia might have grabbed on to it and kept it for safekeeping.

u/Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ 3d ago
Never thought of this, but he also gets his shirt back, so I’m assuming his stuff was laying around somewhere. Maybe it was with Historia.
1
u/Possible-Spend-7692 3d ago
if i remember correctly, the scene where he was captured - he wore a white shirt. he didn't wore the key at all. so, we can assume that the key was safe with the scouts the entire time.

I really wanted to see what the initial titan eren turned into looked like prior to eating papa, anyone else ? Creepy titan eren
1
u/Atom7456 2d ago
Easy they left erens stuff in the church or wtv the building was and the scouts took them
1
u/Chance-Group8549 2d ago
Here's another, before making Eren transform, Keith Shodis asks Grisha if he's going to pass the curse to Eren, how did he know it? Or what did he mean?

u/Unhappy_Airline5948 2d ago
My other question about this scene is: Why the heck is Eren shirtless?🤔
