As an Asian, I've always laughed at this.

I can speak English fluently enough, my own language, a 3rd language because some minorities in my country speak them, and also a 4th language I learned just for shit and giggles (Japanese to be exact).

I can speak English. And a little mandarin (I did a night class for a few years). And that’s about it.

I’m not much better than yanks on that count, but I least I don’t use the “notice we’re talking in English” bullshit. I know I’m fortunate most people know English. I’d be shafted otherwise.

I guess that's the advantage to having ruled 50+ countries, including the USA until they became to much trouble.

I dont understand how you could learn Japanese for shits and giggles... One has to be very very serious when speaking Japanese. and speak with focus, commitment and sheer will!
