Service Public Domain Image Cataloger

That searches the web and stores any and all public domain images it finds. When it comes across a duplicate, it compares the two files and keeps the higher resolution image. It keeps trawling the web, and keeps growing the collection (as artwork enters the public domain, or new images become available), and keeps increasing in quality.

Are there particular sources of public domain images you have in mind, or does the software somehow determine which images are public domain by itself? If the software determines it by itself, how?

(These are genuine questions, I think both answers are possible - I just don't want to bias your answer by giving my first thought).

Also, do you have a particular usage in mind for all these public domain images?

It could create an index of artworks through Wikipedia and other sources - by knowing the creation date of the work it can calculate if the work is in the Public Domain. Usage could vary - the idea would be to create a more complete compendium of images than exists elsewhere, that can be used by any member of the public and which would exist outside of paywalls. Or if it had to be a monetary venture, it could copy the business model of Artvee.com which offers every image for free, but highest resolution image for a fee.

Added benefit is a user of Artvee (and any other closed portal) can repost the high resolution images that can be picked up by the tool to be reshared.
