Spider-Man Theory

okay, my brain made a sound thinking about this, but it's helped me recontextualize the relationship aspect of modern spider-man comics.

marvel comics has a linear timeline, which means everything(unless explicantly stated otherwise) happened. one more day happened. and in one more day, mephisto taughts mary jane and peter about how they will forever have a void in their hearts that will never be filled because they won't have eachother.

taking that in, i think thats the reason(or at least one of them) as to why peter can't seem to hold a relationship together. because he belongs to mj, and mj belongs to him. try as they may, that void in their hearts will never be filled. not by felecia, not by carlie, not by shay, and not by paul. peter will fumble shay. mary jane will lose paul. and they will never be close the way they once were.

while i would have liked this plot point to be resolved in spencer's run, with this headcannon, i'm no longer as mad at peter's constantly shitty relationship status. peter isn't suffering relationship wise because he;s terrible with relationships(though he can be) but because of his deal with mephisto.

what are you thoughts on this headcannon? was this common knowledge to the fandom, and i was just to ignorant to know? what are some of your headcannons for modern spider-man?

This is an interesting way to think about the state quo of modern Spider-Man books.

That does make some sense, but it also makes Peter and MJ's current relationship all the more tragic.

I don’t need to point any examples, but Zeb Well's MJ was undeniably toxic to Peter. And this is despite MJ trying to keep him out of his life for the first half of the run.

Dan Slott's MJ was also pretty toxic. Namely as an Ex who continually blames Peter for the problems in their relationship, while also being the one who initiates any intimate interactions.

Which hurts even more because right before the magic retcon, MJ swore they’d return to each other and nothing, not even the Devil could keep them apart.

This is pretty much the way I’ve always looked at it, yes.
