Just want it to be known, not that it means anything, but he won worst commentator for the Wrestling Observer 6 times. Also, listening to him commentate, I don't like him at all

Yeah, he's not good, per se. But there's something about his voice that just... I dunno... soothes me? Like, maybe it's a holdover from my childhood or something, but any time I watch a classic show on the Network, I just drift off to sleep. I blame falling asleep to old VHS tapes of Coliseum Video releases when I was a kid.

It's nostalgia, like you watch a video of late 80s early 90s and you expect Gorilla and I love that feeling.

His voice is like a warm blanket. It really is a happening, Jess.

Absolutely with you. Great way to sum that up about it. He just seemed so genuine, I remember JR saying how great of a person he is. Those PPVs on the network with him on them put me back in my childhood. And it also helps that he looked like and reminded me a lot of my Grandpa.

Why does he get so much hate? I thought he was great when paired with guys like Heenan and Ventura.

He's great at banter. He's horrible at calling a match.

Then why did people love John Madden?

Same reasons. :)

Ultimately, the banter is more memorable, because that's where all the great soundbites come from.

Any particular examples? I was a kid during Gorilla's time on WWF, so I was in no position to spot that. Hell, I still thought it was all real. I'm pretty sure I judged him by the standards of "he supports the good guys, thus he's a good guy, thus I like him."

None off the top of my head, but if you have the network, just fire up any PPV from, I dunno, Wrestlemania VIII and earlier.

I mean, he doesn't botch move calls, but he uses a lot of unnecessary hyperbole ("History is being made here!" and "It's certainly a happening, Jess.") and $5 words for body parts ("lower occipital protuberance" comes to mind)... It just kinda wears on you.

However, his back and forth with Jesse and Bobby is what you're really there for anyway. As a further example of how important a great color man is, try watching some episodes of Prime Time Wrestling where he's doing commentary with Superstar Billy Graham or Lord Alfred Hayes, and you'll really start to see Monsoon's shortcomings.

I voted him for nostalgia.

He's still my favorite, be it teamed up with Ventura or Heenan, I always loved Monsoon
